36 Jewish Activists Were Arrested While Protesting an ICE Detention Center in New Jersey
I mean, it's shitty they were arrested, but amazing that they risked their own well-being for the sake of imprisoned migrants because members of their community, many of whom have already passed, went through something similar and they're like "fuck that shit."
On Sunday, June 30, 36 Jewish protesters were arrested after blocking the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in response to reports of the horrific conditions the children there are facing. The protesters — members of the Never Again Action group, a group of Jews that are working to “never let anything like the Holocaust ever happen again” — partnered with immigrant rights group Movimiento Cosecha to organize the protest.
So this was in New Jersey. What I want you to take away from this is that there are ICE detention centers all across the U.S. There's one in Tacoma, not far south from Seattle, and I believe one in Seatac. Most of us could be doing this kind of thing and I'm trying to look out for protests like this in my area though I am nervous about being arrested. But we all need to be willing to be arrested for this.
Do it for awesome people like Tae Phoenix.
“I’m a Jewish Latina. The military camps where my people are being held today are concentration camps; just like the camps my people were held in 75 years ago were concentration camps,” said protester Tae Phoenix. “That’s why I’m here. That’s why we’re here.”
There's also going to be a national #CloseTheCamps protest today at noon across the country, which is why I scheduled this to be published so early. I'm on the West Coast but I want everyone who might possibly see this to have the chance to go to a lunch protest if they can manage it.
Fight. Now is the time.
