Trump's Demands That Mexico Detain Migrants Result In Mexican Concentration Camps

There is a disturbing video going around of a Haitian mother in a "detention center" in southern Mexico near the border of Guatemala in which she pleads with journalists filming her through a gap in the fence. She says that they have not been given food since they were detained 10 days ago, there's no drinkable water, and that her son is sick and dying.

Mother pleads for help in harrowing video from Mexico detention centre: 'My son is dying'

I haven't watched the video because I can't yet force myself to.

This happened after riots broke out at the Feria Mesoamericana center in Tapachula, which is presumably why journalists were there.

This "makeshift" concentration camp that is starving its prisoners is the result of Trump demanding that Mexico do something about the migrants traveling from Central America to the U.S. Not only is this a clear case of demanding that others clean up our mess, if you demand that a government you've criticized as being corrupt and incompetent handle a massive humanitarian crisis, the fuck do you think is going to happen?

This administration and the conservatives supporting it is boundless in its cruelty and apathy for anyone who is not them or people who could give them more money/power. They don't care about this woman or her children, they don't care about the father and child who drowned in the Rio Grande this week, they don't care who dies or how many, as long as they profit and/or can cling to their racist, white supremacist beliefs that these people deserve to die.

Remember the hysteria about "FEMA camps" that never happened when Obama was elected? Now we have a Republican president and concentration camps but who cares, because it's people of color in those camps, not white conservatives. Utterly evil pieces of shit.

2020 Challenger Lineup: Updates

I went ahead and watched both nights of the first Democratic debates, and in light of performances and new information circulating Twitter following said debates, I had to make a couple updates to the grades I've given candidates I've already reviewed.

Tulsi Gabbard: B+ ----> F

As hot as that gray in her hair was, Tulsi apparently has many fans among the alt-right and made an entire video that she posted to Twitter about how Mueller said no collusion. Since he definitely didn't say that and also WTF TULSI, I had to give her an F.

Julian Castro: D ----> C

I had originally given Castro a D largely due to what seemed like a "lack of effort," which I don't really understand now, but remember that these grades are completely non-scientific and largely subject to my whims and moods. It's not like I'm getting paid for this. Anyway, Castro may still be a capitalist but he put effort into that debate and impressed me by mentioning non-binary people (I don't know that any Democrat has done that in an official presidential debate) and for laying out a bold immigration plan that demonstrated research and understanding and that he absolutely wants to shut down the concentration camps. C, and I'm open to bumping that up further.

Marianne Williamson: A- ----> F

Another F. Because, of course, after the weirdness she demonstrated during the debate, everyone is looking into her, doing much better research that I did, and it turns out she sucks. Oh, and she revealed herself to be an anti-vaxxer like five days ago. No amount of advocating for reparations can make up for that bullshit.

Your Donations Are Not Reaching Imprisoned Migrant Kids

In response to the horrific news that children are being kept in torturous concentration camps and being denied basic hygiene supplies like soap and toothbrushes and clean diapers, people have tried to donate both money and physical supplies to the concentration camps, missing the fact that these are concentration camps and the cruelty is the point.

U.S. Border Patrol Is Refusing Citizen Donations Even as It Holds Migrant Children Without Access to Soap and Toothpaste

First of all, never try to donate directly to Border Patrol because if they do take your money they're just going to use it for the fucking wall or to pay more jackboots to capture and abuse migrants.

But also, they want these kids to suffer and be dirty.

As reports of deplorable facilities at the border have trickled out, the Trump administration has tried to justify the conditions as the result of an influx of migrant crossings and a lack of funding. To make matters worse, and even more morally bankrupt, the Texas Tribune reports that while this is going on, the U.S. government is simultaneously turning away donations from concerned citizens trying to help alleviate the shortfall and suffering that has left older children caring for younger ones at facilities without essentials such as soap and toothpaste.

Texas Representative Terry Canales sent a letter to Border Patrol asking for a list of items that the kids need and could be donated. They replied saying they aren't taking donations. No word from them as to why, but you know why.

Many of these kids arrive carrying things like toothbrushes, and fucking medicine, and it all gets confiscated by Border Patrol. They want these kids to be dirty and miserable. Is it because it's easier to see people as less than human when they're dirty and miserable? Probably.

Tear down the prison walls. Liberate the children.

Prosecutors Are Desperate To Put Black Women In Prison

We interrupt your usual horrible concentration camp content (because that's a thing now) to bring you this absolute bullshit:

I had to read this like three times before I understood that it's the woman who was shot and lost her baby, not the shooter, who has been indicted. For some reason, the shooter was not indicted by a grand jury. Then, for some other, incomprehensible reason, prosecutors decided to go after the victim. Why? Because they say she started it.

“The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,’’ Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said at the time of the shooting. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.”

Hi, yeah, uh, what the fuck??? I don't care who started it. You don't shoot pregnant women in the stomach and you don't arrest shooting victims because their baby died. Why do I feel like a parent speaking to my children right now?

Marshae Jones is absolutely a victim here. She was the victim of a shooting and now she is the victim of misogynoir from police and prosecutors trying to ruin her life after she endured the trauma of being shot in the stomach followed by losing her baby.

Also, if you're going to use the self-defense argument, how come it works when the person shot is a black woman but if a black woman fires her gun into the air to scare off an abusive man and protect her born children, it doesn't count as self-defense? How come a black man can't legally carry a gun without getting murdered by police?

Seriously, cops and prosecutors seem like they're just desperate to fill prisons with black people. They'll take any excuse they can find. They can't even leave a woman alone with her grief.

Fuck pro-lifers, fuck racist cops and prosecutors, and fuck misogynoir.

Solidarity With the #WayfairWalkout

I'm exhausted today so I'm gonna make this quick. If you haven't heard, Wayfair employees found out that the multi-billion dollar company they work for took $200,000 to supply a new concentration camp for migrant teens with shitty beds and bedding and over 500 of them signed a letter asking them to not do so in the future and donate the profits of the sale to RAICES. Wayfair responded with a polite but resounding "lol no."

So, walkout.

Thank you, Wayfair employees, for risking your jobs to stand up for undocumented migrants and against the growing number of concentration camps on U.S. soil. Wayfair responded to the walkout by bragging about donations to charity (which they get to write off on their taxes) and saying they'll donate $100,000 to the Red Cross, which doesn't help stop concentration camp construction or provide anything to the kids or adults within. In fact, lack of funds and supplies is not the problem. These kids arrive with things like soap and toothbrushes, which are confiscated because the cruelty is the point and dirty kids are more likely to be viewed as less than human.

Also, fuck you, Tomi Lahren and anyone else saying that Wayfair employees want people in the concentration camps to sleep on the ground. THEY ALREADY DO. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wayfair beds and bedding were redirected or resold for profit by the people running the camps because they don't give fuck one for the comfort of the kids they're imprisoning.

Watch Out For Misinformation in Spanish on Translated Materials About ICE

So apparently some utter demon changed the information in Spanish on one of those posts offering advice to migrants for how to deal with ICE and border agents to give them bad advice. They then managed to get the bad translation circulating because so many of us well-meaning white people don't understand Spanish.

The above image is supposed to say this:

But it doesn't. Instead, it gives pretty much the opposite advice. Thanks to Tumblr blog DancingAlongTheStars for the translation:

If ICE agents come to your door:
  • Open the door to talk to the agents. Stay calm.
  • Ask why they’re there and be cooperative.
  • If they ask to come in, invite them in. Be hospitable.
  • Answer all questions honestly.
  • Encourage(?) everybody in the house to answer their questions honestly.
  • If they ask about family, friends, or coworkers, answer their questions honestly.
  • If they ask you to sign something, read the document critically before signing.
Your cooperation is appreciated!
ALCU Only be honest

The fact that someone would spread bad advice that will absolutely get someone arrested and deported away from their families and maybe killed makes me so angry I could spit acid like a fucking xenomorph.

So now along with everything else, take a look at the Spanish in anything like this before you spread it around. A quick check with Google Translate shows that "abra la puerta" means "open the door," which is clearly not what it's supposed to say. In this one you might also notice that the note with the asterisk is missing in the Spanish version.

We shouldn't have to check for this but we do now. People are fucking evil. Be careful and know what you're sharing.

Take Down All the Companies Supporting Concentration Camps

Back to the concentration camps! This morning, some Twitter rando (no judgment, he has more followers than I do) tweeted out a response from Wayfair, a huge online home goods company, to a letter from their employees begging "leadership" to stop accepting big orders (and big money) from concentration camps.

There's really only one response to this shit:

Wayfair is now facing a worker walkout and general boycott. Companies cannot be allowed to get away with profiting from concentration camps, especially not with pathetic excuses like "it's technically legal" (so were the nazi concentration camps) and "well some people think the concentration camps are good!"

Don't shop at Wayfair and spread the word. Fuck you, Wayfair.

Gif of the Day

That's the face of a cat who's about to call his royal guard to arrest you for your impetuousness.

2020 Challenger Lineup: Eric Swalwell

Eric Swalwell, the guy whose very face makes me go "why?" He looks like he could be a College Republican but is in fact a Democrat with fairly liberal stances, but I can tell you right now he's not more interesting than many of the other candidates. Feel free to read on but if you're looking for the most progressive candidate or the one with the best ideas, this isn't it.

Swalwell is a California Representative who is pro-education funding and explicitly for repealing the disastrous No Child Left Behind Act. He wants to decrease military spending, which can be unusual for any politician, including Democrats, so that's nice. He wants to make rich people pay more into Social Security, is pro-choice, and pro-marriage equality. He also came up with an idea for letting members of Congress vote remotely so that they can spend more time in their districts, which makes sense to me but I haven't looked into the issue.

His campaign website is full of information on his stances on issues, so at least he's not mystery man like some of them. He's very anti-Citizens United and is one of the original co-sponsors of the For The People Act that would make it easier to vote and fight gerrymandering, plus would essentially reverse Citizens United. He's co-sponsored a LOT of bills that are pro-voting rights, actually, and was/is a key player in the Russian investigation.

He's pro-jobs, can you believe it? He has tried multiple times to raise the federal minimum wage, the latest being to $15 per hour, which is good but not enough. He also takes some time on his job page to say "I will always support any good idea, whether it is proposed by a Democrat or a Republican, a liberal or a conservative, if it will mean more jobs, higher incomes, and a better quality of life for the American people." If that doesn't make your eyes involuntarily roll into the back of your head then you're living a better life than I am.

Swalwell talks a lot about student debt and all the crushing it does but does not seem to be on the debt cancelation train yet. Again, he lists a lot of bills he's proposed that do some good but not enough. It's the same with environment issues. Regulate fracking? No, ban all fracking before we die horrible deaths, Eric.

He has a section on "fiscal responsibility." Remember when that used to be like the main Republican issue? Now they're all for spending as long as they're killing people of color with the money.

His "Equality For All" section again puts him on the right side of all the right bills, but fails entirely to speak on the murder of trans women and police violence against black people.

I would love to see just one candidate talk about our military without humping the flag and using the word "strong" 50 times. Our military is far TOO strong. Somebody talk about the military industrial complex and how all that talk about needing to protect ourselves and maintain a facade of strength is just an excuse to feed the bloated beast and real fiscal responsibility would be cutting the military budget to a fraction of what it is now.

I'm not even clicking on "fostering bipartisanship."

On healthcare, he's for expanding access to Medicaid but NOT for Medicare for All. He's for a path to citizenship for undocumented migrants but also spouts some shit about securing our borders, as though they aren't already as secure as they could reasonably be. He's against a wall, though! Woo hoo!

He's definitely a tough-on-crime guy. He doesn't use that phrase but the language is there. "I know first-hand how dangerous our communities can be and the importance of keeping Americans safe" shut up white guy.

He likes seniors, veterans, and women!

So yeah. All this paints a clear picture of a centrist Democrat who would probably be a total neo-liberal if elected. He flirts with actual progressiveness but I'm pretty sure he's just a tease. Run for Senate instead, Swalwell. C-.

Yeah kid fuck Disney.

New ICE Deportation Effort To Begin This Weekend

According to the Miami Herald, the renewed ICE crackdown on undocumented immigrants will begin in some areas this Sunday. Be ready.

Deportation crackdown expected to start in Miami — and these other cities — on Sunday

Immigration agents will target Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York City, and San Francisco this weekend, sources from congressional offices and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told the Miami Herald.

That's a lot of major metropolitan areas. I'm guessing that because they're starting on Sunday (or this was why they decided to start on Sunday), they'll be waiting outside of Latine churches Sunday afternoon. Because they've done it before.

If you are undocumented, consider staying home Sunday. Learn your rights, stay home, and don't answer the door. Know what an official warrant is and what is required for it to be enforceable.

ICE has also already broken the unwritten sanctuary rule by entering churches to arrest migrants. Community and rights organization leaders are especially vulnerable and I would love them to lay low for a while, but I can't tell them what to do.

If you know anyone who is undocumented, make sure they know everything they need to know and check in with them periodically. Don't let these fascist thugs kidnap members of your community. See if you can contact local immigrant rights and religious organizations who might be planning protests or rapid response programs to block ICE vehicles from taking people away. They exist.

Stay safe. Protect each other.

Teen Migrants Caring for Toddlers in Child Concentration Camps

Oh boy, aren't you excited to hear more about the current U.S. concentration camps? Let's do it.

Migrant children describe neglect at Texas border facility

A 2-year-old boy locked in detention wants to be held all the time. A few girls, ages 10 to 15, say they’ve been doing their best to feed and soothe the clingy toddler who was handed to them by a guard days ago. Lawyers warn that kids are taking care of kids, and there’s inadequate food, water and sanitation for the 250 infants, children and teens at the Border Patrol station.

There are not enough adults to adequately take care of these children, so the children are taking care of the children. This is so inhumane I can't stand it. And these kids can't take care of the babies, either, as evidenced by the two-year-old, who "had wet his pants and no diaper and was wearing a mucus-smeared shirt when the legal team encountered him."

And they're not even able to sleep.

Binford described that during interviews with children in a conference room at the facility, “little kids are so tired they have been falling asleep on chairs and at the conference table.”
She said an 8-year-old taking care of a very small 4-year-old with matted hair couldn’t convince the little one to take a shower.
“In my 22 years of doing visits with children in detention I have never heard of this level of inhumanity,” said Holly Cooper, who co-directs University of California, Davis’ Immigration Law Clinic and represents detained youth.

Are they keeping the kids up on purpose like they've done at some of the adult camps? I ask because it's a form of torture.

We're about to pour god knows how many billions of dollars into a war with Iran (because you know that's happening), but let me guess, we just don't have enough money to properly care for these kids, right?

Hell country.

Advice for Undocumented Migrants Targeted By ICE

If ICE and Border Patrol are really launching a massive deportation effort next week, then it's extremely important that information on how to protect yourself from these fascist thugs be spread around so they can reach as many migrants as possible. ICE and all cops will lie to you and try to trick you into giving up your rights and letting them arrest you, so learn your rights well and don't trust any of them.

Thanks to feenyxblue, also known as Interdimensional Space Babushka in Training, for transcribing the image:

Second image. A tweet by Donna Trump. Text is “next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States. They will be removed as fast as they come in. Mexico, using their strong immigration laws, is doing a very good job of stopping people…”
Third image: a list titled “What to Do if ICE Comes to Your Door.” Text is as follows:
“Do not open doors. Ice cannot come in without a signed warrant or if you let them in. Tell them to pass the warrant under the door before you open.
Remain silent. ICE can use anything you say against you in your immigration so claim your right to remain silent! Say, I plead the fifth amendment and choose to remain silent.
Do not sign. Do not sign anything ICE gives you without talking to an attorney.
Report the Raid! Report immediately UWD hotline: 1-844-363-1423. Take pictures, videos, and notes: badge numbers, number of agents, exactly what happened.
Fight back! Get a trustworthy attorney & explore all your options to fight your case. If detained, you may be able to get bail-dont give up hope!
Fourth image: the third image in Spanish
Fifth image: a list titled “What to do if ICE agents show up at your door.” List is as follows:
  • Don’t open the door, but be calm. You have rights.
  • Ask what they are there for (and ask for an interpreter, if you need one)
  • If they ask to enter, ask if they have a warrant signed by a judge* and if so, ask to see it. (Through a window or slipped under the door.)
  • If they do not have a warrant signed by a judge, you may refuse to let them in. Ask them to leave any information at your door.
  • If they force their way in, do not resist. Tell everyone in the residence to remain silent.
  • If you are arrested, remain silent and do not say anything until you speak to a lawyer.
*An ICE administrative warrant (form I-200, I-205) does not allow them to enter your home without your consent.
End ID]
Spread this around to help your undocumented neighbors and fight genocide.

Kinda what living in the U.S. feels like right now as everyone is finally forced to confront the fact that we have concentration camps going I told you I was only going to talk about this.

Yes, this is about our migrant concentration camps again. This is all I will be talking about and I am not sorry for that.

Homestead: Who’s Profiting from Detaining Kids?

Both the companies and the people who run them have names. The people who run them also have addresses.

Remember them:

  • Comprehensive Health Service
  • Rick Scott
  • Caliburn International
  • D.C. Capital Partners
  • John Kelly
  • General Dynamics
  • Sallyport Global
  • GEO Group
  • Donald Trump

That last one was obvious but no less important.

Reading the whole article to understand how these corporations and individuals are interconnected is recommended. Also, there's a link to a petition you should sign.

After you sign the petition, maybe we can line up some people against a wall.

I Hate This

Can you predict the subject of this blog post from the trigger warnings?

You've probably already heard that Lord Dampnut declared a mass deportation effort will begin next week. What this might look back is something I don't want to imagine, but for reference we can probably look back through several parts of U.S. history. I didn't think I would live through one of them but I was naive enough to wish to live through interesting times when I was younger so.

What happened to that unnamed Honduran woman has undoubtedly happened before. Many times. And it will happen again. I hate that we have to use and spread a woman's pain to try and get people to understand what this policy does to people and I especially hate that many of them do understand and don't care. I hate it.

I have, of course, tried to explain to conservatives that this is what will happen to women we deport from the U.S. I have stated again and again that if we deport the human beings who fled here to escape rape and murder, they will be raped and murdered. And again and again I see how they will do anything to avoid thinking about or acknowledging that refugees flee from their homes for good reason. Most of us wouldn't leave our familiar homes close to our families for a better job within our own country. Nobody's walking across all of Mexico to live in a largely hostile foreign country because they can make more money here. If they do so to help their families survive its because their situation is truly desperate and such a sacrifice should be admired, not punished.

But many of today's migrants are not the old picture of the Latine man coming here to make money to send back to his family, though that's good enough for me. Many of these people are fleeing here, and many of them are women fleeing with their children, and deportation is condemning them to terrible fates. Deportation is beyond cruel. I don't give one single fuck if the U.S. government says it's "illegal" for anyone to come here. Lots of shit is illegal. You jaywalk because it's slightly more convenient to do so than to walk to the crosswalk and both are misdemeanors in many parts of the country.

But why am I preaching to the choir? The people who support deportation and support Lord Dampnut don't care, they want these people gone because they're not white. If they end up dead, all the better, right?

I will stand between any migrant and ICE and I hope you will too. If we don't, this will keep happening.

Look at this goofy nibble butt.

Jewish Voices On Concentration Camps

Okay, I've had my coffee and some ibuprofen (because I woke up with a wicked tension headache, anxiety sucks) and my brain is working a little better now. Also, Twitter has had time to start discussing the "are the current migrant prison camps concentration camps" issue and Jewish people are here to explain this to us Gentiles so I don't need panic-rant.

Also, there's the entire fact that this isn't the first time we've had concentration camps in this country. This whole thread is important:

If there's one thing to never forget it's that Hitler gained much of his inspiration for what he did to Jewish people and the rest of the Holocaust victims from how the U.S. treated Native Americans and Black people.

Conservative bullshit aside, I'm really super glad AOC is talking about this. I just hope conservatives are not entirely successful in sweeping aside the current suffering of migrants with their condemnation of a term they love to use to describe the existence of abortion.

Here's Genocide!

As we get closer to the day when ICE starts mass murdering Latine migrants (or to the day when we discover they've already been doing that), the controversy over the term "concentration camp" is popping up more and more. I'm white and not Jewish, so there's that. But some Jewish individuals object to calling the prison camps for undocumented migrants concentration camps because it's a term very much associated with the Nazi internment camps for Jewish people and other people the Nazis didn't like.

I'm going to be honest about my thoughts here. It's pretty clear that I'm panicking about what's going on at our Southern border right now. I feel like this is happening right before our eyes and yet not nearly enough people have decided to care enough to do anything for us to stop it. And I Don't Know How To Explain To You That You Should Care About Other People.

My thought is that, if we evoke concentration camps, will that wake people up? Will that make them care? Or will we just be disrespecting Jewish people for no reason?

Another question is whether most or many or hardly any Jewish people really think that calling our current overcrowded, disease-ridden people cages "concentration camps" is a problem. Liz fucking Cheney attacked AOC over this today, implying that the young Representative doesn't know that 6 million Jewish individuals were murdered in these camps. Other Jewish people have pointed out that said concentration camps didn't start with mass murder. Those were specifically death camps.

We can talk about the "definition" of concentration camps, but pretending that there is only one definition of a term as emotionally charged as "concentration camps" helps nobody. What's really at issue here is that many thousands of Latine migrants are being funneled into prison camps or internment camps or whatever you want to call them and conditions are rapidly becoming worse. What's at issue here is that thousands of children are being moved to military bases where they can deny anyone entry to check up on those kids. If you haven't read this thread yet, you absolutely must:

At this point we're one step away from death camps. All they need is a way to efficiently mass murder these kids, and the adults. Can we stop that from happening? Will calling these prison camps "concentration camps" shock enough people into paying attention that we'll be able to save them?

Maybe they won't mass murder these undocumented migrants. But does that make what's happening any more acceptable? What about the thousands of kids being traumatized by separation from their families and internment in horrible conditions, not knowing if they'll ever see their families or freedom again? What about the fact that deaths are already accelerating just because overcrowding and terrible conditions will inevitably kill people? Can we save these people without disrespecting Holocaust survivors and harming the Jewish population in general?

And because I can't help being a self-centered asshole, can I avoid siding with Latine people at the expense of Jewish people or vice versa? Again, complete honesty, there's a voice in my head that says "fuck this SJW respectability shit, people are dying." How fucked up is that? But I'm writing this down so I must be worrying that that voice is right.

I'm scared, I'm panicked, and I don't know what to do anymore. I just want to help those people. I want to end whatever kind of camps they may be, I want to free all of them, and I don't know how. Part of me hopes that one day I snap and just head to the border with a heavy duty wire cutter and, I dunno, a pickaxe? I know I've said this before.

I do know one thing for sure. Fuck Liz Cheney and her torture-loving Darth Vader dad.

2020 Challenger Lineup: Tim Ryan

Welp, back to the indistinct white dudes.

If you don't remember who Tim Ryan is, because I sure didn't, he's the representative from Ohio who tried to unseat Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. Personally I would have loved to have seen someone new as Speaker especially because she's the kind of Democrat who would, you know, refuse to start impeachment proceedings on Trump because ???????? but would Tim Ryan have been any better? Let's see.

Well his Wikipedia pages have even less on his positions than they did on Messam, who has officially not been invited to participate in the debates.

Ryan's story is that he decided to run for President after coming from "a long line of laborers" and then one day his daughter called him upset because her friend's dad was laid off after a GM plant closed. Soooo uhhhhhhh let's fix the country!

How? Something something invest in the economy. I dunno. He seems to support striking teachers, at least, he calls healthcare a right and says he helped pass the ACA and that he's supported Medicare for All for over a decade. He calls climate change "one of the greatest existential threats facing our planet." He then talks about food deserts, which is good, and mentions obesity, which bleh but expected. He speaks out against subsidies for massive farming corporations and wants to give more to small farmers.

He also has a video titled "teaching mindfulness" which piques my interest but I'm not going to watch a four-minute campaign video Tim.

He then has a link on his campaign page that says "Transparency" which brings you to ten years of his tax returns.

Based on recent statement, he seems to oppose the current U.S. aggression toward Iran. According to Axios, he's pro-choice after years of being pro-life, is against cutting taxes as a blanket solution, want to reduce mandatory minimums and is pro-police body cameras, and recently donated the money he got from the NRA to a gun control organization.

Based on all this, it looks like Tim Ryan might be marginally better than Nancy Pelosi but not much. Again, there's not much on him, but I guess I'll go ahead and rate him a C-. He gets penalized because he does seem like an opportunist and I don't trust him. Aside from his supposed long-term support of Medicare for All or at least the ideas behind it, he seems like a standard Democrat in favor of reforms that don't do nearly enough.

Mostly he's rated a yawn.

Here is a Video of a Cat Bickering With a Crow

This is your semi-regular post of something nice because this blog is just a constant depression march. If you've been wondering, yes, I have been dealing with an extended existential crisis, as have many young people. The most recent climate report managed to convince me on a deep level that there really is a significant chance that the human species won't make it past the next hundred or so years, which has been difficult to cope with. I feel like I need to utterly reorganize my priorities and my way of thinking in terms of the future. I no longer feel like I can go on assuming that my work will support women and other marginalized people of the future, because I'm not convinced that future exists.

So yeah look, it's like this cat is arguing with a crow!

I never want to stop writing this blog. It's been harder lately because most days I'm now busy in the morning with paying work. Nights are spent maybe too often getting high and trying to figure out how to move forward with my life. I still hope for a future when I can maybe have a blog or feminist website owned and run by me that can make me enough money to live. I don't know if that will ever happen. I wonder if society will start to collapse in 2050 or whether, like all the climate reports before it, that's too optimistic. I wonder what it will look like leading up to that collapse and when the final descent will begin.

There's a recession coming, and it's going to be a bad one. I wonder if we'll ever recover from it.

This really was supposed to be a positive post but I can't get this shit off the brain. I hope whoever reads this doesn't worry about me too much. If societal collapse is coming, I intend to witness it. I'm not even necessarily depressed, just very emotional in a way I've never been before. In a way, as a person who has always had trouble accessing her emotions, it's nice. But it's also scary and sad and sometimes overwhelming.

Are there climate apocalypse support groups yet? Because there should be.

Part of me thinks I should be spending a lot more time enjoying the beauty of the world before runaway global warming renders most of it inhabitable. Things like cats arguing with crows like they're an old married couple. Crows and ravens are amazing animals. Pretty sure the bird in the video is a crow. Doesn't really matter. They're both intelligent, they teach each other, they play, and they fuck with other animals for fun. And of course, cats.

I've also been thinking about my capacity to connect with other humans, which I've always felt was lacking. Climate news has intensified my desire to break through these walls I've build up and really connect deeply with others. This is my way of saying if you ever want to reach out and just pour your heart out to me, do it. As long as you'll grant me the same liberty. I don't have any more time for being afraid that people will think I'm weird or "oversharing." We're all gonna die, tell me how you feel.

And have a nice weekend.

I Have Some Questions

Overcrowding, Rotten Food & Nooses: DHS Watchdog Confirms Horrific Conditions at Immigrant Jails

Trump Administration to Hold Migrant Children at Base That Served as WWII Japanese Internment Camp

  1. What is in us that turns a deaf ear to the cries of human suffering?
  2. Can I be a good person if all I'm doing about the fact that we have concentration camps in this country again is posting it on my ridiculous fucking blog and my shit ass social media accounts?
  3. What can I do outside of giving money to certain organizations, going to protests that accomplish nothing, or googling how to make a bomb and driving to Oklahoma?
  4. How can I convince enough people to come with me to Oklahoma to take that camp by force without having to use explosives?
  5. How do I look myself in the mirror or sleep at night while this is going on and all I have is a fucking goddamn blog because I have no idea what I can do and anything that might help seems completely overwhelming?
  6. What will it take for humans to stop being as horrible as the worst demon on Earth could possibly imagine to each other?

Gif of the Day

The face this guy makes at the end of the gif really makes it.

Help Sudan and Hong Kong

There's always gallons of awful news just gushing out of the U.S. in rates I can't keep up with even when I'm unemployed, but right now there are also some pretty scary things going on outside of this disaster country that need attention and aren't getting it.

First of all, Sudan is at a serious crisis point when it comes to human rights and freedom. The news that we are hearing about is pretty gruesome. If you look into what's going on in Sudan right now, prepare for news about mass rapes.

What's going on in Sudan and what the US is doing about it -- explained

A year ago, a military coup ousted the authoritarian dictator Omar al-Bashir to the joy of the populace, but as often happens with military coups, the military is reluctant to give up its new power, and protests happened, and now there are human rights abuses all over the place. U.N. experts are calling Sudan a "human rights abyss."

There are several things you can do to help, just remember that certain charities are shit and I'm not sure about donating directly to the U.N., as some are suggesting. The U.N. has their own human rights problems.

Meanwhile, in Hong Kong:

Hong Kong protest: police fire teargas at demonstrators – as it happened

The above is a kind of live blog of the protests, but what the protests are about is explained in a Tumblr post, which is how I found out about this.

Recently, over a million of people are protesting against the Extradition Law. It was an extremely-almost-impossible fight and many students are injured horribly by the police force. I WAS THERE.
If the extradition law is passed, which means that China can “took” anyone from Hong Kong back to China as “prisoners”. Oh you don’t wanna know what China will do to those innocent people …
The government is forcing the law on us. We couldn’t do this on our own. We need more attention from other countries. Please spread this message out.

There's been a lot of awful shit going on in China and the government has never wanted to let Hong Kong have any independence. This law would not only bring them closer to retaking the city, it would expose many people who are there to hide from the oppressive government to, well, like the OP said, you don't wanna know.

reducto1art just wants the news to be spread, and I'm not yet seeing any recommended charities and human rights organizations to donate to, but you can always also contact your representatives about this. I'm not optimistic about the idea of the U.S. pressuring China to leave Hong Kong alone but you never know?

Solidarity to non-fascist humans everywhere. Keep fighting, I see you, and I love you.

Gif of the Day

Thanks for the Horror Story, History Channel

Okay seriously, major trigger warnings for this article. Apparently, there was a mass campaign of sexual assault and generally treating women as less than human for the benefit of men in the early to mid 20th century. No, I don't mean society in general. This was a government-endorsed campaign called, extremely fittingly, the "American Plan."

America's Forgotten Mass Imprisonment of Women Believed to Be Sexually Immoral

I had no idea about any of this.

From the 1910s through the 1950s, and in some places into the 1960s and 1970s, tens of thousands—perhaps hundreds of thousands—of American women were detained and forcibly examined for STIs. The program was modeled after similar ones in Europe, under which authorities stalked “suspicious” women, arresting, testing and imprisoning them.

This, by the way, was separate from the general policy of imprisoning and sterilizing women of color, which was also horrifying, and in many cases even more so. So much of our history was covered up because it makes the country look bad. Even raging feminists like me don't know about much of the lengths the U.S. government went to oppress women and treat us as things.

If the women tested positive, U.S. officials locked them away in penal institutions with no due process. While many records of the program have since been lost or destroyed, women’s forced internment could range from a few days to many months. Inside these institutions, records show, the women were often injected with mercury and forced to ingest arsenic-based drugs, the most common treatments for syphilis in the early part of the century. If they misbehaved, or if they failed to show “proper” ladylike deference, these women could be beaten, doused with cold water, thrown into solitary confinement—or even sterilized.

Another interesting/horrifying bit in this article is the fact that full service sex work was legal in this country until this campaign got into full swing. The hysteria around STIs, and general misogyny, finally saw it outlawed across the nation by 1921. It's important to note that sex workers were NOT the primary source of STIs. Just convenient scapegoats.

And when they discovered that most of the women who supposedly infected the men weren’t professional prostitutes, they expanded the program even further.

This shit went on and saw widespread support for decades.

During World War II, the American Civil Liberties Union not only failed to oppose the Plan; its founder, Roger Baldwin, sent a memorandum encouraging its local branches to cooperate with officials enforcing it.

And, of course, cops took advantage of these laws to rape women.

Many women were also detained if they refused to have sex with police or health officers, contemporaneous exposΓ©s reveal. In the late 1940s, San Francisco police officers sometimes threatened to have women “vagged”—vaginally examined—if they didn’t accede to sexual demands. Women of color and immigrant women, in particular, were targeted—and subjected to a higher degree of abuse once they were locked up.

This shit lasted in some place until the fuck 1970s. Flash forward to 2019, and women are getting suspended from social media for saying "men are trash."

Anyway, men are trash.

Gif of the Day

I love this game.

Uh Oh I Read That Fat-Hating Article

So before I hadn't actually read the entire article that the thread from the previous post was about, just seen the best/worst highlights, but now I have and I can't not respond to it because there is SO MUCH TO UNPACK.

I'm not actually sure if the writer, Tanya Gold, used to be fat or not. She says "as a recovering addict myself" before declaring sugar to be addictive, which may mean she is actually recovering from an addiction disorder or it might mean she thinks she used to be addicted to sugar. I would almost say it has to be the latter because for a "recovering addict," she doesn't seem to understand addiction. The very basis of the concept of addiction, particularly in the disease model of addiction which has been the accepted model for many decades now, is that you can't "just stop." If you could "just stop" then you wouldn't have an addiction disorder - a brain disease.

There's also the fact that the very idea of addiction to a food or anything else the body needs to live is questionable. Are we addicted to air? Sugar is necessary for life. Sugar becomes glucose, from which our bodies derives all the energy it needs to function. You could perhaps argue that "refined sugars" or whatever are not as good for you as the sugars that come from fruits and vegetables and such, but to say "just stop eating sugar," as Gold does, is like saying "just stop breathing."

It matters whether Gold used to be fat. If she didn't, she's really just a horrible person. If she did, she makes me sad, and is also a pretty horrible person. A lot of formerly fat or temporarily not-fat people hate on fat individuals with an extra intense fervor because they need to justify all the suffering they've gone through to force their bodies into a shape it doesn't want to be. They hate fat acceptance activists because if they didn't, they might have to accept that all that starvation was for nothing. That they were fooled and suffered needlessly. I feel sorry for them but also they need to stop.

Gold's hatred of a not-that-fat mannequin seems to reach this level of intensity.

Yet the new Nike mannequin is not size 12, which is healthy, or even 16 – a hefty weight, yes, but not one to kill a woman. She is immense, gargantuan, vast. She heaves with fat.
She is, in every measure, obese, and she is not readying herself for a run in her shiny Nike gear. She cannot run. She is, more likely, pre-diabetic and on her way to a hip replacement.

You talking about this, mannequin, Gold?

It's kinda hard to tell from the photo, but this mannequin looks a lot like me. I would judge her to be size 16-20. Size 16 is the national average for cis women.

You'd think Gold had never laid eyes on a fat person before. Does she really think someone of this size would be incapable of running? There might possibly be some concern about impact on the knees after a while, but that's true with runners in general. And, of course, how the fuck is anyone supposed to lose weight if they're not allowed to exercise???

Then there's this shit:

I would never want a woman to hate herself for what she finds in the looking-glass. But to have control over your body you must first know it; to be oblivious is not to be happy, unless you are a child.

"I don't want you fatties to hate yourselves. It's just that you're immense, heaving, unfit to be portrayed in any form, incapable of movement, about to die, and also you're oblivious children."

The unmitigated gall to declare that all fat people don't know their bodies, and that she knows their bodies better than the people who live in them. And then she has the fucking nerve to mention narcissism.

The fat-acceptance movement, which says that any weight is healthy if it is yours, is no friend to women, even if it does seem to have found a friend in Nike. It may, instead, kill them, and that is rather worse than feeling sad. Fat-acceptance is an artifice of denial – they are fat because they do not accept themselves – and a typically modern solution to a problem, if you are a narcissist. It says: there is no problem. Or if there is, it’s yours, not mine. As soothing as that may be to hear, your organs and your skeleton will not agree.

Neither acceptance nor denial is narcissism, Gold. Narcissists tend to be thin in today's society because for a narcissist, all that matters are appearances. Narcissists also tend to think they know better than anyone else and put others down to make themselves feel good. Narcissists create a false persona and wear it like a shell to protect themselves. They are the ones who strive every day to fit cultural beauty standards and often do, but they hate themselves anyway, and deny that fact by acting like they're amazing people whom everyone should worship.

Accepting themselves as they are despite society viewing them as flawed? Not in the narcissist's playbook, even if it was just an act.

And yeah, some people do eat just to feel any kind of positive sensation for a bit, and it's sad that for so many people, that's the only accessible source of pleasure. But that is the result of capitalism and advertising that tells you to hate yourself and never be satisfied with what you have. It's the stress of trying to survive while enduring the screams from judgmental fucks telling us we're not doing it right or good enough. I consider myself fat with a proud and capital F but I will die from stress, I guarantee you that. And Tanya Gold is stressing me the fuck out with her bullshit.

Also, of course, shame on the Telegraph for publishing this shit. Fat hatred kills. This kind of rhetoric is why we have eating disorders. Thanks a fucking lot.

This is a Really Great Thread on Fatphobia

I continue to feel as though fatphobia/fat hatred is the axis of bullshit that troubles me the most. I can feel pretty great about being a woman and about being queer, and I'm kind of neutral on the mental illness I guess, but the shame of being fat is a powerful thing. I keep finding myself wishing I could be thin "like the beautiful women" I see on social media and in ads. In spite of all the body positivity, I can't shake the mentality of thin = beautiful and fat = ugly. And that mindset feels so unfeminist, adding another layer of shit.

The issue of fat hatred has been dredged up again because someone posted a photo of a fat-ish Nike mannequin and fatphobes everywhere flipped their shit, some insisting that no one who is "obese" could possibly use athletic gear in any way. This is a bizarre assertion in a culture where the go-to excuse for fat hatred is that fat people could just choose to exercise and they could easily not be fat anymore. This is false, but thin people insist in believing that fat people are entirely to blame for their weight and their fatness is a result of "laziness" or some other value judgment.

But Michelle Allison's Twitter thread on the topic of fatphobia and exercise brings it all together.

Our suffering is the point.

You can see the same kind of thing in the roots of other forms of oppression. People compartmentalize and then use these made-up categories to try and carve a sense of meaning out of existence, the vastness of which is outside of the capability of our limited brains to comprehend. People are desperate for a sense of superiority to override their sense of insignificance.

It sucks and we all need to fucking stop it.

Good evening this cat is wearing a bow tie.

2020 Challenger Lineup: Wayne Messam

Thank fuck, someone actually interesting. If you've been following my chronological order, you might have expected Kirsten Gillibrand here, but I got excited and already did her after she announced her exploratory committee in January. Wayne Messam is a guy who absolutely no one seems to be talking about but Wikipedia still has him on the list of serious presidential contenders so here we go.

Messam's parents are both from Jamaica so first things first, everyone, he is Jamaican-American. Not African-American. He is currently the mayor of Miramar, Florida and "a general contractor and owner of a construction firm." He's also President of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials.

There's very little about Messam even on Wikipedia, but here's where he gets my attention: "Messam has called for the cancellation of all student debt."

That's literally his only listed political position on Wikipedia but as I've said, SLAM DUNK. This appears to be a central cause for his campaign.

“The mayor firmly believes you cannot just move to debt-free college when student loan debt is stifling the American dream today,” the aide told Buzzfeed. “We’re declaring it as an issue that threatens the economic security of this country. We don’t have to walk into another Great Recession.”

Messam's campaign page is uhhhhhhhh not working right now? But according to Axios, he opposed the Trump tax cuts for the rich, called the idea of arming school teachers with guns "asinine," criticized Trump for withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord, and is an "immigration reform, pathway to citizenship" guy.

I don't think Axios had much trouble keeping that one under 500 words. I took the extra step of looking at his Twitter account and found that he supports paying teachers more and wants a two-state solution for Israel/Palestine. And he used to play football.

With all this information, I can confidently rate Messam a ??? and a "why did I bother?" I guess because I'm dead tired of talking about white dude presidential candidates. Messam is still way ahead of Joe Biden though. No doubts there.

Happppyyyyyyyyy Prrriiiiiiiiiiiiiide Moooooooooooooonth!!

Reinstate Dave Muritu, Sandwell College of Further and Higher Education

It strikes me how low my chances were of coming across a Twitter post about this, because even after two days it hadn't yet reached 70 retweets, but I'm glad I saw it. Apparently, a black man was fired from his position as a lecturer at the Sandwell College of Further and Higher Education in the U.K. for writing the word "racist" on a school poster.

Blogged: No racism, no victimisation. Reinstate Dave Muritu. #ReinstateDave

The extensive post on the issue didn't say exactly what Dave Muritu found to be racist about the poster, but I would hope we could all agree that it's ridiculous to be fired for that. As the post explains, this was not a pattern of behavior. Rather, it sounds more like retaliation from corporate-minded "education managers" frightened by Muritu's strengthening of the school's union and responsibility for labor victories.

Since Dave arrived at Sandwell College in 2013 the UCU branch he is secretary of has grown considerably. Collectively, the branch have achieved a number of victories. They’ve had pay increments put back after years of stasis, gained considerable extra holiday, and fought off punitive lesson policy.

This, plus of course the fact that Muritu is a black man.

This cause needs support. Nobody should be fired for writing "racist" on a poster that was probably racist, because if a black equality activist thinks something is racist then IT'S FUCKING RACIST AND WE WHITE PEOPLE SHOULD PAY ATTENTION rather than use this as an excuse to fire him.

I mean, just listen to this bullshit:

On Wednesday 29th May, during the half term holiday, my partner Dave Muritu was summarily dismissed as a Maths lecturer by Sandwell College of Further and Higher Education, where a senior manager ruled that he was guilty of gross misconduct.
The gross misconduct in question was writing in pen, on a Prevent poster, the word “racist”. Although he owned up to having done it and apologised, this writing on a single piece of paper, according to the ruling manager, was “serious damage to college property” – the seriousness comprising of the “potential to bring the college into disrepute” and the use of “inappropriate language“ –  the word “racist”.

Gross misconduct? Inappropriate language? Serious damage? Man, imagine if cops were held to this high of a standard.

I'm not familiar with labor laws in the U.K., but even over here in union-hating central, we have laws against clear workplace retaliation against union activity. Does Sandwell get a pass because the union leader they fired is a black man? I say "fuck no."

Spread this around however you can and check the end of the post for more ways you can help. Stand with Dave Muritu, who sounds like an awesome person.

Maybe Now It's Time To Do Something About Climate Change?

Actually, people are now recommending that we stop referring to this problem as "climate change," because it's looking like the real "change" is going to be a change of the human species' status from "alive" to "extinct." I personally like "climate catastrophe" or "climate crisis."

Anyway, we're dead.

New Report Suggests ‘High Likelihood of Human Civilization Coming to an End’ Starting in 2050

I continue to hate being the constant voice of doom and gloom, but mainstream news outlets are not going to report on this and people deserve to know? I feel like people should probably know. You can choose to ignore it and honestly at this point I can't blame anyone for choosing that route. But the rest of us should be able to prepare for the beginning of the end. For me, this cements my decision to never bother saving for retirement because chances are so low that I will ever get one.

If you want to do something, I recommend looking to see if there's a local Extinction Rebellion chapter in your area. This is something that is of course much biggest in Europe, but at least Seattle has a small chapter that I'm looking into getting involved with. If I'm really into the idea of harm reduction, I'm gonna need to focus my energy on the mitigation of the climate apocalypse.

You know, after I get through some of the tougher stages of grief. I'm pretty gripped in the fear stage right now, and somehow I have to keep working to make money at the same time. I never should have wished to be alive during an exciting period of history. I didn't mean the END of history god damnit.

The Child Migrant Internment Camps Are Getting Worse

We've got to liberate these kids.

Trump Administration Cancels English Classes, Soccer, Ping-Pong, Legal Aid for Migrant Children in U.S. Shelters

According to the Washington Post, the White House had decided to stop providing “English classes, recreational programs, and legal aid for unaccompanied minors staying in federal migrant shelters nationwide, saying the immigration influx at the southern border has created critical budget pressures.”
The Office of Refugee Resettlement, also know as racist AF, has started discontinuing the money for fun stuff for like soccer, which the administration has deemed “not directly necessary for the protection of life and safety, including education services, legal services, and recreation,” U.S. Health and Human Services spokesman Mark Weber told the Post.

Of course, critical budget pressures.

The Pentagon is asking for a colossal $718 billion for its 2020 defense budget

$9.2 billion of that is for "emergency border funding." So none of that can be diverted to buying some ping-pong tables and soccer balls? Of course not, we have to build a wall.

We need to face facts that these are concentration camps, for children, and we're letting this happen. While Democrats are worried that young people are pulling them too far left, we have children in concentration camps right now. If this isn't enough to convince you, then:

Exclusive: Watchdog finds detainees 'standing on toilets' for breathing room at border facility holding 900 people in space meant for 125

This is utterly inhumane. And our leaders are doing fuck all about it. We could be doing something about this right now but we're not.

I don't know what to do anymore.

The Best Tweets About Straight Pride

It's that time again! That magical time of year where the cis straight people come out of the woodwork to demand their own parade to celebrate uhhhhhhhh hundreds of years of being seen as normal and oppressing LGBT+ people? Anyway, this year, someone in Boston, who is of course a white supremacist, is seeking a permit for a straight pride parade. The jokes almost make this shit worth it.

Here's my personal contribution to the effort:

Are too many of my joke references to the Fairly Odd Parents? Nah.

Another cool thing, both Smash Mouth and the bassist from Blink-182 are supporting the dunking on Straight Pride efforts.

They're not exactly good bands, but I'm pretty sure these are straight dude staples, so it's super funny. Happy Pride.

Happy Pride Month!

Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera Getting a NY Monument

Some good news! Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, trans women and LGBTQ+ right pioneers, leaders, and all around amazing women, are getting a monument in New York City! It will be placed just down the street from Stonewall Inn, where the first Pride event, which was a riot against police brutality attacking trans sex workers and drag queens, took place.

The planned monument will be publicly announced on Thursday in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the uprising, which was a seminal moment for gay rights. It is also part of the city’s effort to fix a glaring gender gap in public art. Statues of L.G.B.T.Q. individuals are virtually nonexistent among the city’s monuments, and the city says the dedication to Johnson and Rivera will be one of the world’s first for transgender people.

This year is a wonderful year as it's the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, which happened in 1969 (nice). If you don't know your queer history, Johnson and Rivera and Stonewall in general is a great place to start. I found this nice little write-up by J.M. Ellison to get you going.

I love Pride Month so much. It's such a positive time during which so many queer people get to feel important and special and loved and it's just great. I love all my queer siblings, forever!
