The Washington Post Hates Progressive Candidates

So it's no secret that I kind of hate the Washington Post. I didn't like them even before I found out it's owned by Darth Bezos and before it started telling me every time that I'm "out of free articles" no matter what day of the month I try to look at their fucking articles because I wasn't paying attention to the outlet or because I'm working. It's always been clear that they're pure capitalists who are dedicated to preserving the status quo no matter how many people it kills. Having the tagline "democracy dies in darkness" isn't fooling anyone.

Especially because they keep publishing hit pieces on actually progressive presidential candidates. How many have they done on Bernie now? I've lost count, but now they're trying to go after Liz, and this is all they could come up with:

Haha no way I'm actually linking to WaPo in this article. But seriously, that headline? "While teaching, Elizabeth Warren worked on more than 50 legal matters, charging as much as $675 an hour"?

How is this? News?

Even if you argued that they buried the lede here and the real story is that Liz used to advise companies like Dow Chemical, that was "in the mid 90s." What the authors of this shitty article apparently missed even though it's information you can find on her Wikipedia page, which is what I did when profiling Liz as part of my 2020 Challenger Lineup series, is that she used to be a conservative Republican, switched parties in 1995 because she got fed up with Republican hypocrisy and lies, and has been electric-sliding left ever since.

Now Republicans are gonna use this article to attack Liz after defending Brett "I'm A Rapist" Kavanaugh because "it was a long time ago" that he sexually assaulted and tried to rape Dr. Ford.

Remember when it came to light that Hillary Clinton defended an accused rapist when she was working as a public defender and kinda laughed about it during an interview? The Washington Post defended her. And they should have, because she clearly wasn't laughing at the victim or laughing off the situation but rather made an offhand "this is fucked up" joke because she clearly didn't want to defend the guy. But while WaPo is happy to defend neoliberals like Hillary, they publish hit pieces on Bernie and Warren. So fuck 'em.

And as always, fuck Jeff Bezos.

Trump Administration Intensifies Attacks On Trans People

While the trans community grieves yet another brutal murder of a black trans woman in Texas (and now another one in Philadelphia, this time of Michelle “Tamika” Washington, RIP), the Trump administration has been busy drafting legislation to allow homeless shelters to deny entry to trans people.

This proposed rule provides that grant recipients, subrecipients, owners, operators, managers, and providers (Shelter Providers) under HUD programs which permit single-sex or sex-segregated facilities (such as bathrooms or temporary, emergency shelters and other buildings and facilities with physical limitations or configurations that require and are permitted to have shared sleeping quarters or bathing facilities) may establish a policy, consistent with state and local law, by which such Shelter Provider considers an individual’s sex for the purposes of determining accommodation within such shelters and for purposes of determining sex for admission to any facility or portion thereof.

If you're not fluent in legalese, and I'm certainly not, you can rely on the National Center for Transgender Equality to assure you that yes, this is fucking over trans homeless people.

And of course, let's all remember that trans people are disproportionately likely to experience homelessness due to families disowning them and rampant workplace discrimination, among other things all related to transphobia.

I know we cis ladies are very concerned about the attacks on bodily autonomy happening right now, but just as trans women support us in that fight, we MUST support them and fight to protect them from these attacks. Just as unsafe abortions kill, so does homelessness and intense societal transphobia, and especially transmisogyny.

Headline of the Month

Not everything is bad. Over in the U.K., fed-up leftists and young people are done letting racist, fascist assholes parade around the streets without a little reminder of their vulnerability.

Nigel Farage 'held hostage on Brexit party bus surrounded by milkshake-holding protesters'

If you haven't heard, there has been a growing trend, or perhaps movement, of people in the U.K. throwing fast food milkshakes onto nazis preaching their hate in the street and other white supremacists, including Nigel Farage, a well-known racist assbucket and current leader of the Brexit party.

This is just amazing. There's nothing illegal about holding a milkshake or standing around a campaign bus. But the threat of the humiliation of being covered in ice cream kept him from doing what he wanted to do. Because rich politicians can't stand the thought of their overpriced suits getting stains on them.

It's just so goddamn funny that this shithead felt like he was being "held hostage" because he can't handle being hit with some milky deliciousness. I guess then keep your ugly suits and your poisonous rhetoric inside your gilded chariot and fuck off, Nigel.

Maybe Don't Poison Your Autistic Kids?

I slept through like all of April and I'm sorry about that. But this story on NBC today is a grim reminder about how horribly autistic kids are treated by our society, which includes their parents.

Parents are poisoning their children with bleach to 'cure' autism. These moms are trying to stop it.

Imagine a world where autism is so demonized even though literally all you have to do is listen to autistic people and change your behavior and expectations around them a little that parents would feed their autistic kids bleach in an attempt to "cure" them OH WAIT THAT'S THIS WORLD.

The parents in many of these groups, which have ranged from tens to tens of thousands of members, believe that autism is caused by a hodgepodge of phenomena, including viruses, bacteria, fungal infections, parasites, heavy metal poisoning from vaccines, general inflammation, allergies, gluten and even the moon.
The so-called treatments are equally confused. Some parents credit turpentine or their children’s own urine as the secret miracle drug for reversing autism. One of the most sought-after chemicals is chlorine dioxide — a compound that the Food and Drug Administration warns amounts to industrial bleach, and doctors say can cause permanent harm. Parents still give it to their children orally, through enemas, and in baths. Proponents of chlorine dioxide profit off these parents’ fears and hopes by selling books about the supposed “cure,” marketing the chemicals and posting how-to videos.

Ummmm is promoting child abuse and possibly child murder a crime? Should these people just be allowed to do this? Asking for all of my autistic friends.

The rank hatred of autistic people for daring to have needs outside of the majority is deadly. Thanks in part to anti-vaxxers (though shitty treatment of autistic kids and adults pre-dates that fuckery), who claim that vaccines poison kids, there are MOVEMENTS of parents trying to feed their kids poison. The details of the posts in these Facebook groups are horrifying. If you're autistic, I really don't recommend reading the following. If you're not, then I urge you to.

“My son is constantly making a gasping sound,” posted one Kansas mother who claimed to treat her adult son with chlorine dioxide, according to screenshots shared by Eaton and Seigler. “He won’t open his mouth,” a Canadian mom wrote of her 2-year-old’s unwillingness to drink the chlorine dioxide. “He screams. Spits. Flips over.”

It is so important to spread accurate information about autism and the very simple ways that you can help autistic people navigate a hostile society. Many of them are super easy, such as just not expecting them to make eye contact with you, listening to them when they passionately talk about their specific interests and not making fun of them for it, and letting them stim without being weird about it. You know, like a friend.

But the best thing you can do, because autism presents in many different ways, is to listen to anyone you know who is autistic when they speak about their autism. If you don't have any autistic friends, there are SO MANY awesome autistic individuals you can follow online. My friend Mooseplaining Max has a very funny and enjoyable Twitter account that not only makes jokes about mansplaining and other privileged phenomena, it has helped to educate me on autism and his specific needs, which is great because it means I can be a better friend to him.

Normalize autism. Destroy the idea that autism needs to be cured. Promote the idea that what needs to be "cured" is the anti-autistic ableism that infects our society. This is an emergency. Kids are being poisoned by their parents, not to mention not being vaccinated, because they'd apparently rather have a dead kid than an autistic one.

Autism is not a fate worse than death. If you'd rather poison your kid than simply learn how to properly interact with them, you shouldn't be allowed near children at all.

Here Comes Uhhhhh Mass Violence Against Immigrants

Welcome to "What Threw Me Into An Existential Crisis This Time?"

If we're not bothered by fascism in this country, can we at least be alarmed by the rhetoric coming from our President promising that undocumented immigrants will be rounded up en-masse by "removal forces"? No?

Remember when Trump's ex-wife tried to sound the alarm by telling us all that he kept a book of Hitler's speeches by his bed?

What are you gonna ship them out in, Trump? Packed train cars?

The term "removal forces" struck fear into my very soul but this tweet, like all the others, passed by the American people who collectively shrugged. We really don't learn from history, huh? We're really too afraid to disrupt our relative peace and comfort to stop the impending genocide, huh?

I'm sorry, am I being an alarmist?

You should know by now that any time I say "I'm sorry" on Not Sorry Feminism, I don't mean it.

White House confirms Trump is considering using the military to remove immigrants

White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley downplayed reports Friday that the Trump administration was considering invoking the Insurrection Act to remove immigrants from the country — but he didn’t rule out that it was still on the table.
“There are lots of tools at [President Donald Trump’s] disposal,” Gidley said, speaking with Fox & Friends. “We haven’t used them all and we’re looking at ways to protect the American people.”
Gidley’s comments were received warmly by the live studio audience which applauded enthusiastically about the idea of using the military to force out undocumented immigrants at gunpoint.
“That would be great,” host Brian Kilmeade responded. “Last time we used [the Insurrection Act], I believe, was the L.A. riots where the military came in and said we are going to need military presence there. The military is there [at the border] but they can’t do as much as they want.”

Skipping toward genocide while conservatives cheer and liberals shrug. "They can't do as much as they want" because we all know what they really want is to slaughter refugees and other migrants with impunity.

Sixty-three people were killed and 2,383 were injured in the 1992 Los Angeles riots Kilmeade referenced Friday, after police and military forces were deployed to snuff out riots and protests against the acquittal of several police officers involved in the brutal beating of a black man, Rodney King, whose arrest one year earlier was captured on video.

If you need me I'll be in the shower hugging my knees.

This is apparently actual capoeira. That episode of Bob's Burgers really didn't do it justice and now I feel like it was pretty racist because damn. It's beautiful, it's badass, and the history is the same. It was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil and is officially considered to be "intangible cultural heritage" by UNESCO.

Nope. Just nope.

Hickenlooper is a neoliberal capitalist who opposed marijuana legalization because he's involved in the alcohol industry, supports the oil and gas industry and fracking, is against Medicare for All claiming that most people are totally happy with their insurance (lmao), and describes himself as a "fiscal conservative." So he's happy to take the money of rich cis white gays and poor people can just get fucked.

You'd be better off voting for Joe Biden. Hickenlooper gets an F-enlooper.

Abortion is About Bodily Autonomy

There are a lot of ways to get sucked down bad avenues when it comes to abortion debates. Yes, contraception fails, but people who used zero contraception during sex still need access to abortions. Yes, not everyone who gets pregnant consented to sex, but everyone who consents still needs access to abortions. Abortion is a human right everyone is entitled to, yes, ENTITLED, because bodily autonomy is an essential, fundamental right.

Everyone will agree to this if you frame it outside of the abortion debate. Do you have the right to not be touched if you don't want to be touched? Yes! That's bodily autonomy. Should people be forced to give blood against their will? No! That's some horrifying Mad Max shit that we can all agree violates bodily autonomy and is bad. Most people will even agree that nobody should be forced to be an organ donor upon their death because some people are skeeved out by the idea even though you won't give a single fuck what happens to your body when you're dead, because you'll be dead. And yet, you have to check a special box when applying for your driver's license to become an organ donor, even though living people who have already been born and who desperately need an organ because one of their's has failed.

Do pregnant people have fewer rights than dead bodies?

This is the argument we need to be pressing. Nothing else really matters. Responsibility, contraception access, the absurd expectation of celibacy for anyone who doesn't want kids - none of that actually matters because bodily autonomy is a fundamental right of every human being.

A human baby could be dying of blood loss right in front of you, and you cannot be compelled to give that baby your blood even if you and that baby happen to have a very rare blood type and that baby WILL DIE if you deny your blood to that baby. It is legal to say no to giving that baby blood and nobody in the history of the U.S. has ever tried to pass a bill compelling people to give blood, let alone classifying the refusal to do so as murder.

So why is it different when it comes to pregnant people and embryos/fetuses?

It's not, actually. Some asshole conservatives a few decades ago just decided to frame the idea of abortion as HORRIBLE BABY MURDER in order to manipulate Christians into getting political so that they could get more votes. Jump to today.

Please propose the blood-giving scenario to every anti-choicer you encounter. This is the core of the need for full abortion access.

To The Vast Majority Of Pro-Lifers: You've Been Had

Yes, Alabama passed a total abortion ban, and yes, you should expect that to be coming to every red state in the country soon. But how many people actually want total abortion bans?

The answer is about the same number of people who don't like ice cream.

Alabama Bill at Odds With Public Consensus on Abortion

That's from Gallup. You know, the one that does all those polls? They found that the vast majority of Americans, including those who erroneously call themselves "pro-life," favor allowing abortion under at least some circumstances.

At the same time, there are two important areas of consensus that have typically been respected in U.S. abortion laws. One involves protecting abortion rights when pregnancy endangers a woman's life. The other is keeping abortion legal when pregnancy is caused by rape or incest.
According to Gallup's 2018 abortion survey, not only do most Americans as a whole favor these protections, but so do majorities of pro-life Americans -- 71% for the endangered woman's life exception and 57% for cases of rape or incest.

Data For Progress created this handy map showing that in every single state, including Alabama, support for total abortion bans doesn't reach 30%. Anywhere.

Not a hint of green on that map. Nope.

So if total abortion bans are so unpopular, why did one pass in Alabama?

Well, this should clue Alabama citizen in to the fact that YOUR "REPRESENTATIVES" DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU AND DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK AND DON'T ACTUALLY REPRESENT YOU AT ALL. This is also yet another among many signs that abortion is not about what people want and not about "saving babies." It's about power and control, it's about keeping the poor poor, it's about keeping women down and less likely to vote. It's about making more black women dead or in prison, and putting more black men in prison so they can be forced into slave labor. Watch as the backlash against the movement to let felons vote grows.

This is about regaining control from the common people and concentrating ever more power and wealth into the hands of a few privileged wealthy white men.

You can tell it's not about saving babies even in the way that so many people are okay with "killing babies" when that "baby" threatens the life of the mother or is conceived via rape/incest. If someone really thoughts of a fetus, an embryo, or a zygote as a baby with all the rights and value of a born baby, then it wouldn't matter how that baby was conceived, and it wouldn't even matter if the baby threatened the life of the mother. Would you be okay with killing an already-born baby that was conceived via rape/incest? No? Then why is it okay to kill something you view as the same under the same circumstances? What if, for some reason, a born baby threatened a mother's life? Maybe via post-partum depression or simple poverty? Is it okay to kill that baby? No? Why?

The answer is that they don't view a zygote as being the same as a baby and nobody really does. And we shouldn't because miscarriages, or the body's way of aborting an embryo or fetus because conditions are not ideal, happen at least 25% of the time after pregnancy begins. That number is definitely low because miscarriages can happen without the pregnant person even being aware of pregnancy and when they happen in the first trimester, and most do, they can appear to be just a heavy period.

The point is that most people who call themselves "pro-life" are fooling themselves. And the so-called "pro-life" politicians are either fooling themselves or are promoting something they don't even believe in at all in order to manipulate people.

How often does this happen?

It happens a lot, is the answer.

Dear Most Pro-Lifers,

You've been had.

It does look kind of scary, doesn't it?

Every Day I See New Videos of Police Brutality

When I was working on the campaign to pass the anti-police brutality bill in Washington, I ended up following every decent Facebook page that keeps track of and exposes cases of brutality I could find in order to keep track of the problem and ask them to promote the campaign. After we got the measure on the ballot with a ton of support (and by we I really mean the people of color who did most of the work and went unappreciated by the white Democrats here), I couldn't bring myself to unfollow any of them.

As a result, I literally see new videos of police fuckery almost every day, the mast majority of which is perpetrated upon people of color. Sometimes it's multiple times in a day. And I want to stress the words "new" and "videos." I'm not counting repeat cases, and I'm also not counting all the cases of police brutality that go un-filmed.

I can no longer avoid the reality that this shit happens every goddamn day across the U.S. As a white person, I could be told that it happens every day, but it's hard for that to sink in until you actually see it. I therefore recommend that each and every one of my fellow white people do the same. Follow Police Brutality Corruption in America and Protest Police Brutality and the National Association Against Police Brutality and Stop Police Brutality, and look up any local organizations, too. If you really want to help, you need to force yourself to look at this shit daily, no matter how unpleasant it might be.

The only downside is that because I don't have the space on this blog to post about racist police brutality every day, sometimes I go a long period of time not posting about any of it. I hate having to pick and choose which case I highlight because they're all horrible and wrong. So I thought it might be better to just tell my fellow white people how to get a real sense of how common racist police brutality really is. I wish I could get deniers to do the same but they never would, but at least you can have resources to point to when you encounter them. Like me, you can say you see videos of this shit on a near daily basis, and god knows how many cases go un-filmed and un-reported.

This is not a "few bad apples" issue. This is deeply systemic. I will highlight one case here that think highlights the kind of bullshit black men in particular have to deal with and fear:

The white cop refuses to take his hands off of this man, claims to have a warrant but has nothing to show, repeatedly calls the man "Quentin" in an attempt to prove he has a warrant even though this man's name is Clarence Evans. Evans is desperate to keep from being arrested, likely and rightfully afraid that he'll die in custody.

The first time I saw this video, which was on one of those Facebook pages I talked about, I watched in fear that Evans would be shot down and killed by the white cops. Thankfully, he was not. But so many of these videos end in the worst way that it felt like a miracle Evans survived relatively (physically) unharmed. In a moment, either of the white cops on the scene could have whipped out a gun and ended Evans' life and gotten away with it simply by claiming they were afraid he would black man them to death.

This is terrorism. Black men have to fear this any time they're outside, even if they're in their own driveway playing with their children. Hell, they're not even safe inside their homes. Can you imagine living like that?

Cops lately have been complaining about the backlash against them and many are threatening to quit over it. Good. I hope they all quit. I don't give one single fuck if petty crime goes up. I've seen too many black people and others die.

Get Ready To Support Pregnant People In Conservative States

I hate to do this, but we need to face facts that Roe v. Wade is soon going to be overturned, and all those horrific anti-choice bills will be allowed to stand and many more will follow. Those of us living in blue states will be safe, but Georgia's bill already includes a provision that allows for the prosecution of pregnant people who cross state lines to obtain an abortion, and even without that, traveling across state lines can be too difficult for those living in poverty or living paycheck to paycheck.

Those of us who can need to be ready to open our homes to pregnant people who need an abortion. Washington State residents, our neighbors in Idaho will need us. They'll need a place to stay after the long journey where they can be safe and cared for before and possibly after the procedure.

And, of course, be ready to open your wallets in order to pay for the missed work days that these individuals will suffer in order to travel long distances just to get some necessary healthcare.

We'll need to do this until the Supreme Court can be re-balanced, which honestly might be never if some things don't drastically change.

Depending on how certain laws are written, we may need to prepare to do this all in secrecy or code. I'm not sure yet how that will look but we need to ensure nobody we help is arrested for getting an abortion across state lines. It's possible we could even be prosecuted in the future for helping this happen.

This is all very horrific to face but if we can mentally prepare ourselves ahead of time, we'll be more ready to support our neighbors in the future. I am very much convinced that most if not all of the above will become a reality very soon.

Hell country will be hell country, you know. Fuck this place.

2020 Challenger Lineup: Jay Inslee

I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and then I had to take a very important nap but I didn't forget about this again.

Alright, back to the less exciting candidates. Jay Inslee happens to be the governor of the state I currently live in and have lived in for my entire life. The general impression of him among the typical individual living in western Washington (eastern Washington is like an entirely different place but is sparsely populated so they kinda don't matter, it's not my fault it's the electoral college's fault) is that Jay Inslee is fine. I don't mean attractive, just that he's alright. I voted for him in the last election because he was the better choice. He's still a liberal, but he's good on climate change and has been a thorn in Trump's side, which is always great.

But I was surprised when he announced his candidacy. There has been speculation that he's only running to further his political career without expecting to win. However, his efforts to become known as the "climate candidate" could signal that he's serious, and as increasingly alarming reports about climate change come out, it's not outside the realm of possibility that this could propel him to the top of the polls. But, as usual, I'm not optimistic about that.

So let's talk about all the ways in which he's not leftist enough for me.

Inslee's campaign website only outlines his plan for 100% clean energy in the U.S. and his position on climate change. It's a ten-year-plan, which if he's elected and takes office in 2021 is almost fast enough to avoid the 2030 deadline to drastically reduce world emissions to avoid passing the point of no return into runaway climate change that will probably make the planet uninhabitable for humans. To quote his website:

To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the global community must cut climate pollution in half by 2030, and achieve global net-zero pollution by mid-century. Governor Inslee’s plans will ensure that America meets these IPCC targets and leads the world in defeating climate change. As the world’s largest historical emitter of climate pollution and the global leader in technology innovation, America will be among the first to achieve that net-zero target, as fast as possible, and by no later than 2045.

I would almost want to support Inslee for this plan alone, but as an increasing number of scientists are finding, what we really need to do to save humanity is to abolish capitalism. And Inslee is a capitalist. So.

Looking for more details on Inslee's position on issues other than climate change, I found a very handy website called OnTheIssues that outlines how every political candidate has voted on key issues. Let's take a look.

He's pro-choice. He has voted to protect public housing and likes to pump money into the economy rather than support bullshit austerity policy. He's good on gay rights, but his position on trans rights is unclear. He's rated as being pro-labor and has helped to increase the minimum wage across the state, though $13.50 an hour is still way too low in a state that is so expensive to live in.

Inslee recently signed a bill to phase out the practice of jailing kids for skipping school or running away. I didn't even know we were doing that in this state and it seems supremely fucked up that any of that was happening at all but at least it's going to stop now? He also signed a bill allowing prisoners who would have been moved from juvenile detention to an adult prison at age 21 to stay in juvenile detention centers until age 25. It was a bill that these inmates helped write, so I feel like it should be supported, though I had thought juvenile prisoners were just released when they turned 18 and their record expunged. We're just transferring them to adult prison now? Fuck.

OnTheIssues indicated Inslee is not so good in general on criminal justice, getting a 40% rating on supporting rehabilitation of prisoners and voting to build more jails rather than focusing funds on non-prison solutions. He has a B- rating on drug policy reform.

He generally seems to like funding schools but has given some support to charter schools despite his 100% pro-public education rating, though it says he strongly opposes voucher programs. He helped expand early education programs. He supports sex ed but includes abstinence education with contraception education.

In terms of healthcare, OnTheIssues says "Take initial steps towards universal health care. (Mar 2019)." I don't know exactly what this means. However, Inslee recently signed a measure introducing a single-payer option into Washington's health insurance program, which is not bad. Because Inslee has continued to take federal grants to expand Medicare and Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, I was able to have free health insurance during all those years where my income was very low and get a pretty good subsidy right now. We'll see if the single-payer option is better.

Inslee is quite good on immigration issues. His open legal challenges to Trump on immigration and the Muslim ban are what first sparked speculation that he would run for president. Inslee has openly welcomed Syrian refugees and when Trump threatened to just send all undocumented migrants to sanctuary cities he was like "yeah do it immigrants rule."

He supports affirmative action and is good on voting rights. He's strongly for gun control but supports expanding the military.

OnTheIssues rates Inslee as a "hard-core liberal" which is a laughable term to me but whatever. He's solidly leaning left.

Inslee gets a boost for focusing on the one issue that might literally kill us all, but I see him as being somewhere in between "liberal" and "progressive." He's not as lefty as Liz or Bernie.

He gets a B+. He would get a B but he gets a plus for the clean energy plan. Regardless, he's still widely unknown at this point and I don't know if he has a viable path to the presidency. We'll see after this summer's superstorms.

Me trying to act normal while our alleged democracy crumbles around us.

I put the headline in all caps because I'm really feeling like the vast majority of people in the U.S. aren't getting it. The all caps is meant to convey a frantic, screechy, on-the-verge-of-panic tone.

I woke up today to this fucking shit:

Trump White House revokes press access; will grant 'exemptions' as it sees fit

I was part of a mass purge of “hard pass” holders after the White House implemented a new standard that designated as unqualified almost the entire White House press corps, including all seven of The Post’s White House correspondents. White House officials then chose which journalists would be granted “exceptions.” It did this over objections from news organizations and the White House Correspondents’ Association.

The Washington Post article that Daily Kos is quoting here came out two days ago and I only heard about it because of Daily Kos this morning. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that all Washington Post content is behind a fucking paywall now lmfao. Seriously, even on the first day of the month, any time I try to read anything from WaPo it's like "HEY FUCK YOU GIVE ME MONEY."

Do you want to warn us about this giant step toward fascist dictatorship or?

And yeah, that's what this is. Trump just mass-purged journalists from the White House except for a privileged few? And you know the exceptions are all from Breitbart and Fox News. This is not just shitting on freedom of the press and wantonly kicking transparency out on its ass. This is the creating of state media - news that will only publish and report shit that is supportive of the president. This is Dictatorship 101.

I don't want to be that person but at the same time why the fuck aren't people freaking out about this oh my god I'm going to go sit in the shower and cry, this country is doomed okay we are going to have a dictatorship under Trump, when he cancels the 2020 elections I'm gonna say I told you so and that'll be the last time you hear from me because I'll be dragged out of my apartment in the middle of the night and thrown into a secret journalist prison so enjoy my frantic rantings while you can assholes.

The Bougies Are At It Again

Oh boy, more financial advice for us poors from a middle class white finance writer who writes for a stock advice website with the tagline "Smarter, Happier, and Richer."

You don't need that: Average American spends almost $18,000 a year on nonessentials

You might have already seen the graphic that USA TODAY tweeted out for this article because everyone's dragging them for basically telling us all to crash the U.S. economy.

My favorite part of this is the $94 on "personal grooming" as though "personal grooming" is at all an optional luxury in this country. Our society basically demands that women engage in extensive personal grooming to the point that you cannot get hired and can get fired from a job you already have if you don't. I can't go into an interview for a decent job without makeup on and expect to be hired. As feminist as I am, a lifetime of being told that I'm not fit to leave my home without at least a bit of makeup to cover my disgusting pimples and acne scars has made me often feel like a prisoner to concealer. I also don't have the energy to put up with the stares and comments and other bullshit I would have to endure if I left the house in shorts without my legs shaved.

And if you have facial hair? There's nothing that can cover that up. As long as companies require people to be shaven and groomed in order to work there at all, I don't want to hear shit about how personal grooming products are "nonessential."

Then there's "online shopping." Does USA TODAY think that everything bought online is "nonessential"? After all the effort Amazon put into killing smaller, local retailers and strangling prices and creating horrifying sweatshops to be their shipping centers, and you're gonna tell me that the money I reluctantly spend to buy cheap power cords for my laptop when they wear out and that I absolutely need in order to make money is me wasting money on "nonessentials"? What about the cheap sunglasses I need to drive because my eyes are super sensitive?

But aside from all that, let's talk about who is really spending an average of $18,000 per year on these "nonessentials." That number is based on the "average adult in the USA" which they calculated based on a survey of 2,000 people. Now, 2,000 people is a pretty good sample size. However, I couldn't find any specifics about the average income of the people surveyed, how survey respondents were selected, whether they excluded outliers, etc. So when they say the average adult spends that much per year but 28% of them can't pay off their credit card debt and 26% can't afford "car repairs" (but don't specify how much they think the average repair bill is), is that 27% of respondents necessarily the same people spending $18,000 per year on these supposed frivolous luxuries?

The answer to that is almost certainly no, but even if the answer is yes, why is it that people who have enough money not to have to worry about car repairs and credit card debt think that the poors or the working class or anyone struggling to survive can be helped by some asshole putting their nose up in the air to say "just spend less money then."

Come here, Maurie. I have something to explain to you.

It never occurs to these "financial experts" to ask why people spend money on shit they deem "nonessential." Could it have something to do with the fact that every day we're bombarded with a thousand messages from every angle that all say "BUY SHIT. BUY SHIT BUY ALL THE SHIT RIGHT NOW YOU NEED SHIT TO FEEL GOOD BUY IT BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY OUR SHIT SPEND MONEY GIVE US YOUR MONEEEEEEYYYYYYYY!!!!!!"

Could it have something to do with the fact that capitalism inevitably makes people so miserable, exhausted, and empty that the only way we can keep from killing ourselves is to spend our piddling pay on fancy coffee or decent food we didn't have to make ourselves (because we don't have the time and/or energy to make nice meals) or distractions like TV shows or any of the random crap that companies are constantly begging us to buy from them?

That's not even to mention that some people have no choice but to pay money for rideshare services to get to work because their car broke down AND THEY CAN'T PAY FOR REPAIRS and public transit in their area is shitty to non-existent? I can't tell you how many Tumblr posts I've seen begging people for money to pay for an Uber to get to work so they don't lose a day of income or even get fired, which would likely result in them losing their homes and/or going without food and/or essential medication.

This out-of-touch bullshit infuriates me. What I hate the most, as I've stated in other long all-caps-filled blog posts about out-of-touch bullshit "financial advice," is that none of this is actually meant to be financial advice for people who need it. Maybe Maurie convinced herself this would actually help people who are struggling financially, but she was fooling herself. This is propaganda to help reassure rich people that those of us who are struggling are doing it to ourselves, and if we would just be a bit smarter and try a bit harder, we would be fine! The rich aren't causing our economy to crumble and the massive widening wealth gap and spiking homelessness rates, it's our fault for spending money!

Meanwhile, the same rich people own the companies with the big marketing departments entirely dedicated to telling the rest of us to BUUUUUUUUUYYYYYYY SHIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTT!!!!

The biggest "fuck you" to you, Maurie Backman, for writing a shit article based on unverified "research" that serves only to blame those of us living under the constant threat of homelessness, hunger, and early death via poverty, those of us struggling to keep our cars running so we can work at all, those of us struggling to pay for the medication we need to stay alive, for our own suffering under the boot of capitalism and the exploitation of the rich. And fuck you, too, USA TODAY, for publishing this.

Fuck the Motley Fool, fuck financial writers everywhere, and, as always, fuck capitalism.

Okay Fine I'll Talk About All The Anti-Choice Fuckery

I've said before that I don't talk about abortion much because that subject is pretty well covered already. But I think the real reason might be because I feel a sense of despair over the subject. The most virulent anti-choicers cannot be reasoned with in any sense of the word and they and politicians happy to use them for votes are never going to stop pushing their agenda to stop all legal abortions and propel us into a future worse than anything in the past.

The anti-choice legislation happening in this country right now is not going to send us back. It's worse than that. These bills are seeking not only to outlaw any abortion, but to imprison women for having miscarriages and stillbirths, which mostly happens to poor women of color, especially black women. This is an excuse to throw more of the most marginalized people in this country in prison so they can be used for slave labor. It's a win-win for Republicans, who are happy to use the brainwashed anti-choice population for this purpose.

And with the SCOTUS as it is, with at least one vile rapist on the bench, I don't know how we can possibly stop it. I guess all we can do is start creating underground ways for people in red states to get the abortions they need. It's not going to be easy with bills that will even criminalize attempts to cross state lines to get abortions.

Georgia Women Could Receive Death Penalty for Abortion as State's Maternal Death Rate Rises

HB 481, which will go into effect in 2020, classifies fetuses with fetal pole cardiac activity as persons under the law. This “heartbeat abortion ban” goes much further than merely banning abortion, however. It also:
  • Counts fetuses in the Census.
  • May make it a homicide to “kill” a fetus, since fetuses are now persons. Georgia criminalizes homicide with the death penalty or life in prison.
  • May make it a criminal conspiracy to help a woman travel across state lines to get an abortion. This is because fetuses are now people, killing them is now homicide, and so traveling to commit a homicide is a crime.
  • Requires physicians to report abortions. This could mean that a doctor is required to report her patient if the patient gets an out of state abortion.

Also, remember that the term "fetus heartbeat bill" is a misnomer. A six-week old EMBRYO (an embryo doesn't become a fetus until 9 to 11 weeks after conception) does not have a heart and the movement detected at six weeks is the umbilical cord vibrating. But none of that matters to anti-choicers anyway. Reality, honesty, and facts don't matter to people brainwashed into thinking that aborting a pea-sized little nub with less sentience than a fly is "murder."

The Georgia bill is what most people are talking about, but check out this fuckery going on in Ohion right now:

New Ohio Bill Would Ban Most Private Insurance Coverage Of Abortion

Talk about burying the lede.

The bill would ban nontherapeutic abortions that include "drugs or devices used to prevent the implantation of a fertilized ovum.”
Becker says the bill also speaks to coverage of ectopic or tubal pregnancies where the fertilized egg attaches outside of the womb.
“Part of that treatment would be removing that embryo from the fallopian tube and reinserting it in the uterus so that is defined as not an abortion under this bill," Becker explains.

Okay, let's start with the less horrific part of this. The language prohibiting "drugs or devices used to prevent the implantation of a fertilized ovum"? That's all hormonal birth control. That's what hormonal birth control does. It prevents the uterus from being in a state where implantation is possible. It may also prevent the release of eggs but it always also prevents implantation in case an ovum is released anyway for whatever reason.

Now let's talk about this shit: “Part of that treatment would be removing that embryo from the fallopian tube and reinserting it in the uterus so that is defined as not an abortion under this bill."

Hey, Becker. What the FUCK are you EVEN TALKING ABOUT???

“That doesn’t exist in the realm of treatment for ectopic pregnancy," argues says Jaime Miracle, deputy director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. "You can’t just re-implant. It’s not a medical thing."

It's not just that this bill, clearly written and promoted by utterly uneducated and clueless cis men who didn't even bother to glance at fucking Web MD or some shit before drafting a bill that will kill pregnant people, 100% absolutely people will die from this.

She says, under this bill, women would have to wait until their very lives were in danger to get an abortion in the case of an ectopic pregnancy.
“This bill will have grave impacts on Ohio’s infant and maternal mortality rates," Miracle says.

Ectopic and tubal pregnancies are extremely dangerous to the pregnant person and must be aborted or the pregnant person WILL DIE.

Becker. You absolute fucking wanker. I'm so mad I've gone British.

“When you get into the contraception and abortifacients, that’s clearly not my area of expertise, but I suppose, if it were true that what we typically known as the pill would be classified as an abortifacient, then I would imagine the drug manufacturers would reformulate it so it’s no longer an abortifacient and is strictly a contraceptive," Becker says.

CLEARLY this is not your area of expertise but you're pushing a shit bill on it anyway. Drug manufacturers can't just REFORMULATE birth control pills that have been on the market for many decades to fit your absurd and fresh-out-of-the-ass definitions of "abortifacient" and "contraceptive." The term "contraceptive" has always included preventing fertilized eggs from implanting. The people of Ohio can't and won't wait for drug makers to somehow "reformulate" their drugs so that they only prevent the egg from being released or whatever, and even if they could do that, eggs will get out anyway and more abortions will happen, only they'll be unsafe so more (mostly poor) people will die.

But that's what you want, isn't it?

It's just incredible and so fucking Republican to create a bill requiring medical procedures that don't exist and centering on shit you have zero understanding of. Just.

Why don't you just shoot women directly in the face? It would save so much time and have the same effect.

There's so much fucking bullshit going on in the United Disasters of America that I'm in 100% done mode and I think I'm gonna take a long walk in the nice weather while I can before the wildfire smoke forces me to stay inside all summer, but here is a really important article that I think everyone should read:

What Happened After My 13-Year-Old Son Joined the Alt-Right

You gotta just read the whole thing but I do want to say that I think schools do need to take serious action to protect female students when sexual harassment is reported and I believe the unnamed female student who reported the sexual harassment because even if she misunderstood the actual words or the intent, she still felt unsafe and that matters. I don't believe this was a case of a "false accusation." However, there are two key things we can learn from this story.

  1. Don't treat children like criminals and keep cops out of schools. "Sam" in this case was traumatized by school administrators telling him he committed a crime and treating him like a hardened adult criminal rather than a 13-year-old boy whom the school and society failed to teach not to commit sexual harassment, even accidentally.
  2. Do treat children seriously. Were we not all teens desperate for adults to treat us like our thoughts, opinions, and feelings actually mattered only to be dismissed and treated like weren't even fully human? Didn't we all hate that? That's because it's dehumanizing and awful. A 13-year-old is not an adult but he is a human being and his feelings are valid and his life and mental health matters.

If "Sam" had not been treated like a criminal by his school and then had his feelings dismissed by his parents, I'm betting he would not have lost those two years in the sewers of the internet.

Treat teens better. I don't care if you like kids or not, treat them well. Respect them and their humanity. Because they fucking GROW INTO ADULTS. That is all.

Guest Post: How My Feminism Is Connected to My Veganism

Kate Harveston is a political writer from Pennsylvania. Her favorite topics are feminist-focused, but she writes on a wide variety of social and cultural issues. If you enjoy her work, you can follow her on Twitter or visit her blog, Only Slightly Biased.

I've always felt a strong affinity for animals, and I'm speaking honestly when I say I far prefer most four-legged creatures over their two-legged human counterparts! I’ve always wondered why I hold such affection and empathy for my feline and canine companions, and recently, I believe I’ve unearthed at least one possible reason I resonate so strongly with animals. My reasoning relates to how we often share the unfortunate mutual experience of being treated like nothing more than pieces of meat by someone else in power.
I originally converted to a vegan lifestyle because of numerous documentaries I've viewed about the inhumane conditions experienced by animals on factory farms. My path to veganism started with an aversion to pork products due to the way these farms treat intelligent, loving porcine females with absolute neglect, confining them to gestation crates so small they cannot even turn around and forcing them to undergo repeated insemination and pregnancy.
I think that part of the sympathy I feel for these poor incarcerated creatures mirrors my own frustrations of being trapped in a patriarchal society where many of my most personal of decisions, especially related to my reproductive rights, get dictated by men without a single care for the way their choices impact women’s’ everyday lives.
The way factory farms basically rape female animals — even dubbing the tie-downs they use during artificial insemination "rape racks" — is a sad parallel to our patriarchal society’s constant validation of sexual assault and many other actions intended to make women subservient to the wills of men.
From ever-more restrictive bans on abortions to allowing employers to refuse birth control coverage, men in America have a long, illustrious history of denying women the most fundamental right of all — the right to decide what she can and cannot do with her own body.
Even former House Speaker Paul Ryan suggested that forced intercourse constitutes nothing more than an alternate form of conception, ignoring the traumatizing reality of sexual assault. According to him, whether you are a female human being or a hen matters not one whit, nor do your feelings about being forcibly compelled to procreate.
The objectification of both women and animals doesn't end with reproductive freedom or lack thereof. As any SVU detective will confirm, rape isn't so much a matter of sexual desire as it is an expression of power and dominance over another person. If there's one thing the patriarchy loves most, it's showing presumed superiority over others. Historically, men who commit sexual assault often receive laughably short sentences or even no sentence at all.
Speaking of messaging, clear parallels have already been drawn between the objectification of women’s bodies in the media and that of animals. Just as flashy ads show delectable plates of warm steak and chicken, women’s bodies are likewise put on display in advertising to invoke a primitive reaction in many viewers.
Underlying all of this cruelty against women and animals alike lies the same deep level of narcissism that leads some people to truly believe that only they matter, and all the living creatures on the planet exist solely to serve their needs. And indeed, many serial rapists and murderers perpetrated violence against animals as youth, and nearly every mass shooter has a history of domestic violence — something the media frequently conveniently dismisses instead of examining further.
I’m not by any means suggesting that everyone who eats meat is akin to a murderer or sexual abuser! My desire is to call out those who deny that the injustices being waged against animals in factory farms are just that — injustices. Similarly, those who deny that women are still an underprivileged class in society need to do more research into the reality of the situation. Both of these mindsets of denial validate a power dynamic that keeps the patriarchy alive and well.
Again, I am not seeking to pass judgment on anyone’s dietary choices — my sole purpose is to inform. It’s worth noting that even eating one less meat-based meal a week makes a difference environmentally and where health outcomes are concerned. If you’re interested in learning more about how you can cut back on your meat consumption, I’ve listed a few beginner tips below:
  1. Talk to a doctor first — it’s important to understand your body’s unique nutritional needs before embarking on any new diet.
  2. Start slowly — As I said, even eliminating some meat from your diet makes a difference. Start out at your own pace, cutting back wherever feels comfortable.
  3. Do lots of research. Slowly, you can learn more about protein-replacement products that you can start integrating into your diet instead of meat. A few great places to start are trying out tofu, quinoa and other protein-loaded bases for building out a full meal.
  4. Read food labels and make sure you’re not replacing meat with less-healthy alternatives.
  5. Get involved with other like-minded individuals and community groups to get ideas and motivation!

I hope this post has provided you with a few reasons to reconsider meat culture in America, especially as it relates to our feminism. To truly address violence and inequality in our society, we should make it a priority to examine cruelty toward all creatures, great and small.

Sandra Bland Took Video Of Her Arrest And We're Just Finding Out Now

I hope you remember Sandra Bland. She was, I believe, the original "say her name" woman who was pulled over for failing to use her blinker, and because she was annoyed about it, the white cop arrested her. After three days in jail, she was found dead in her cell. Her death was ruled a suicide despite the fact that she had been showing no signs of suicidal ideation and had just gotten an awesome new job.

That was almost four years ago, and it's only thanks to investigative journalists that we're finding out this video exists. The following video shows the police yelling and threatening to taze Bland, then demanding she "get off the phone" after she gets out of the car on his command.

This is so clearly a case of white cop feeling threatened by the existence of a black woman and nothing more. This is pure white supremacy and misogynoir at work. There was so clearly no reason for this asshole to fear for his safety. He arrested her for nothing and she was murdered to cover it up.

The arresting officer was indicted on perjury charges for the bullshit line that he dragged Bland out of her car in order to "more safely conduct a traffic investigation," but even those charges were dropped because prosecutors weren't 100% sure they could get a conviction. Trooper Brian Encinia is now banned from being a cop forever (supposedly), but has remained a free man with no criminal record.

However, Bland's family is demanding that the case be re-opened in light of this new evidence that the cops hid from the public. Why doesn't the entire department get in huge trouble for covering up key evidence? Because they're cops and cops get away with anything except exposing the crimes of their fellow officers? Right.

Re-open the case. Someone needs to answer for the murder of Sandra Bland.

2020 Challenger Lineup: Bernie Sanders

You know, I thought I was doing this primarily because I saw so much hate against Bernie Sanders and thought it would be a good idea to lay down the facts about each candidate. Now that his turn has finally come around, I'm not excited about it.

I've cooled a little bit on Bernie in the past months. I'm beginning to feel that Elizabeth Warren is a better option. However, Bernie has remained very popular, much more so than Liz.

I still feel that a lot of the criticism of Bernie comes from a place of neoliberalism or is coming out of the trauma of the 2016 election. I've read multiple critical articles/written pieces on Bernie that come down to "Bernie has refused to support the Democratic establishment and now he wants to run for president as a Democrat, how dare he." This seems like such a disingenuous argument. And it seems to come from the same people who keep accusing Bernie of splitting the vote. He can't split the Democrat vote by running as a Democrat, but you think he should run as an Independent? That is exactly how he would split the vote and hand the 2020 election to Trump.

We also live in a two-party system in which a third party candidate cannot win. This has been engineered by both Republicans and Democrats who do not want more competition. I've seen people claim that Bernie should do the work to create a viable third party instead of running with Democrat support. That just blows my mind. You try creating a viable third party. People have been trying for like the entirety of U.S. history and haven't been successful. Does Bernie have to perform miracles for you to stop riding his ass?

These are the arguments coming from liberals who so hate any hint of real leftism that they would vote for Joe Biden and commit us to this great big greasy slide into economic collapse rather than vote for the guy who's like "maybe this massive wealth gap is a bad thing." These are the establishment Democrats who don't understand that the reason Bernie is so popular is because of his criticisms of the Democratic party and his refusal to lick their boots.

I've even seen these people try to claim that Bernie hasn't really done anything in all his many, many years as a legislator, which, if you look at his record, you'll see is extremely untrue.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms of Bernie. It does look like he's been significantly more focused on appealing to the idea of the disenfranchised white man than pledging to help the millions of poor people of color and particularly women of color. He recently failed to impress at the She the People Presidential Forum because he failed to offer any actual plan for fighting white supremacy, instead once again bringing up the fact that he marched at MLK rallies.

We know you've marched, Bernie. We want concrete ideas for the problems that exist now.

When asked if he would consider a woman for a running mate, he signaled that he would, but when asked if he would consider a woman of color, he basically said "we'll see." Seattle feminist writer and editor Rosie has also spoken out about a personal experience she had in 2016 when she witnessed his campaign event be interrupted by black women who were demanding attention to police brutality issues, and instead of letting them say their piece, he went into the crowd (which was largely hostile to these women) and started shaking hands. Then, when he got to Rosie, he looked at her "black lives matter" pin and visibly grimaced.

It makes me doubt that Bernie's racial politics have evolved with the times. Of course, every white candidate has their own issues with race, including Warren's history of claiming Native American heritage she has no right to. Even Kamala Harris has been accused of promoting and holding up criminal justice policies that have been devastating to communities of color.

Which brings me to the whole "let's all pledge not to say anything negative about any Democrat candidate" shit. Let's not. Because the negative aspects of a candidate's history are just as important to making an informed choice as the positive, and candidates who can't stand up to criticism, who deflect and get defensive and refuse to listen to criticism and refuse to change, those candidates need to go. Biden to Bernie, candidates whose response to criticisms of their records are "lol fuck you" should not get to be President. We already have a President like that right now and *gestures to everything*.

I still suspect that a lot of criticism against Bernie is liberal/centrist fear of anything that is actually leftist because it's either going to take away the power they have now or power they hope to gain in the future, but a lot of criticism is also coming from women of color on his race issues and that is all valid.

Okay I've already written a ton and haven't even gotten into his policy positions.

Yes, Bernie Sanders checks pretty much all of the progressive boxes. Green New Deal. Medicare for All. College for all. Jobs for all. Women's rights. Racial justice. Disability rights (there's an often-overlooked one). Empowering tribal nations, which is conspicuously absent from Warren's issues page. The only thing that makes me grimace is Bernie's desire to "fundamentally" restructure ICE instead of just abolishing it, at the very least because it's become a symbol of U.S. genocidal fascism.

He has an extensive issues page that covers a lot more than Warren's. However, what he lacks in comparison to Warren is specific plans for change. Warren's got a whole "recent announcements" section that lays out several specific and innovative plans, including her student loans debt forgiveness program, which as I've said before, is a big swish, nothing but net. She also has a specific affordable housing plan, a plan for universal childcare, a plan to break up big tech (as well as big banks, of course), abolishing the electoral college, addressing the mortality rate of black mothers, debt relief for Puerto Rico, and of course her ultra-millionaire tax.

Now, I'm sure Bernie has plans. But his website mostly outlines promises to reverse all the damage to our country caused by the right (and some by neoliberal Democrats). And all of that is important, but I'm feeling like we really need some fundamental changes to break us out of this horror story cycle of going from a little bit better to a bunch worse over and over and over.

I honestly can't tell anymore who's more progressive between Bernie and Liz. What I can tell is that Bernie has been the recipient of way more tweets and thinkpieces about why he's a threat and a problem and will get Trump elected again than Warren. So is that because he's further to the left and they know it, or because he's still so popular right now and Warren is not so much? Time will tell.

So, after all that, I really don't want to even grade Bernie. There's too much fucked-up-ness around him. But can we all agree that no candidate is above criticism, and they're all still capitalists relying on the system that's fucked us, and that we still have until 2030 to make radical fucking changes before we pass the point of no return and slide into runaway climate change that will make the planet uninhabitable for humans? Cool, have a nice week.
