Gif of the Day

Happy Halloween! Do try and have some fun tonight.

Trump is Tossing Out an Amendment to the Constitution and That is Fascism

This birthright citizenship thing. I forgot to mention it in my last post but it probably needs one of its own anyway.

It's not a "distraction" so shut up about that shit right now. Even if Trump fully intended it as a distraction, calling something that is blatantly fascist and white supremacist a "distraction" is so dismissive, just stop. This is something that is going to affect many lives, and likely end at least a few, so SHUT UP.

Not only that, but Trump is threatening the very core of the democracy of this nation. He is claiming that an executive order can override a constitutional amendment. It can't, but the fact that he's going to try and do it anyway is a massive threat to the country. He has ignored the law before and said he'll do it again. Even if the Supreme Court rules against him on this, which, let's be honest, it won't, I have no doubt that he would ignore that ruling and plunge full on ahead. If we let him, rule of law will mean nothing anymore and he will know it.

Not only that, but the 14th Amendment protects all people born in the U.S. from having our citizenship revoked for any reason. Trump will go on to revoke the citizenship of anyone who stands against him, starting with the most vulnerable.

This is a huge tipping point. I fear that even flipping both the House and Senate won't stop him. The fact that he's doing this at the same time as nodding to and protecting white supremacists tells me that he's expecting resistance and needs loyal footsoldiers to attack protesters.

Every time we let him get away with something like this, things get worse and he gets bolder. If we don't take a stand now, more people will die. So vote, and protest, and make all the noise you can on social media. Don't let him get away with this.

After two days of running around doing a ton of shit and not sleeping well and napping, I finally need to sit down and write about the shit going on in this country.

I know everyone is saying this and I've said this and it's useless to say it but fucking hell. I would never, ever have thought in a million years that I would be living through a time when the president of the U.S. called himself a nationalist while spouting antisemitic dogwhistles only to have a mass shooting at a synagogue that the same president dismissed, victim blaming because they didn't happen to have armed guards that day even though the shooter killed four cops in the process, then put this shit cherry on top:

Trump admin will apparently not renew program to fight domestic terror

"The Trump administration had already canceled a grant for a group that fights white supremacist terror."

I don't know how people can look at all this and not come to the conclusion that Trump is not only happy to have white supremacist and neo-nazi terrorists in this country, but is actively encouraging them to commit acts of terrorism and working to prevent them from being caught/punished.

The horrors just never end. I don't need to watch a scary movie today because nothing is scarier than our reality right now. I'd normally try to have fun on Halloween but, fuck. FUCK.

Don't think I want to believe this myself. But experts on fascism are saying that were are already several steps down the process of descending into a fully fascist state. I hope we can put the breaks on by flipping the House and Senate on the 6th, but I cannot get my hopes up.

Part of the reason violence has escalated is because of the approaching midterms and talk of the "blue wave." We need to be prepared for more violence as the 6th inches closer, and especially be prepared to protect each other at the polls. I'm in a vote-by-mail only state, but in states that have polling locations, be careful and protect each other. Go to the polls in pairs or groups if you can. Be prepared for intimidating presences.

If there is a blue wave, take a bit to celebrate, then prepare for the possibility of more reactionary violence. White supremacists will feel their grip on the country loosening and it will frighten and anger them. If you're a potential target, be careful. If you have a lot of privilege, protect your vulnerable community members.

Things are getting worse. Every day is going to be a battle. I can only hope that Trump has shown his hand too early here. Trump is a fascist and he wants fascism. Don't mince words. Don't assume that he's doing anything out of ignorance or ineptitude. Don't ever underestimate him or his evil administration.

Keep fighting. I love you all.

Gif of the Day

I'm not sure if that's a ferret or a stoat but I do know he's got a rockin' hairdo.

My Day Canvassing

So I made a series of videos during my time canvassing for Dr. Kim Schrier since it was my first time ever doing this kind of door-to-door canvassing. It wasn't my favorite thing but certainly wasn't as bad as my anxiety said it was going to be.

Today was busy, in a good way, or at least in the way that capitalism says is good because it involved jobs and money making. Also it took a while to upload these videos to YouTube. I probably need to start writing blog posts the night before again, because the daytime keeps getting away from me.

As for doing more video blogging in the future, I'm not sure. I honestly wasn't wild about spending so much time looking at my own face. I don't have the greatest relationship with that face. But here you go.

Please pay no attention to my weird, very old YouTube account.

Scientists are definitely grown versions of the kids who put things into the microwave just to see what would happen.

Morning Announcements

Hey folks. Today I'm off to canvas for Dr Kim Schrier. Or, to be more accurate, I'm off to canvas against Dino Rossi. Or to be the most accurate, I'm off to knock on people's doors and beg them to vote blue so that we can have the best check possible on a president who is barely holding back from just telling his followers to go out and murder Jewish people and migrants of color.

I'm working to minimize harm now so that we can survive to fight for justice later. Even though, with my anxiety, I don't even know how I'm going to be able to knock on strangers' doors and try to engage them about things they're probably trying hard not to think about.

But I gotta. We all gotta do something. And I know it will feel good afterward. After this I think I'm going to try one of those texting banks.

Hang in there, everybody. Be safe, but fight if you can.

Cats are liquid.

The Large Crowd of Asylum Seekers is a Humanitarian Crisis

Not a threat. Not an army. Not a mob coming to steal your jobs and eat your children.

That might seem ridiculous to even say, but Fox News has been saying all of it except for the eating children part, as far as I know. Right-wing pundits are calling it an army because they're carrying flags. They've also suggested that somehow the Democrats have organized and paid for this "caravan," and are even, like, driving them in buses and then having them get out an walk for the news cameras.

Again, couldn't beat Donald Trump in a presidential election, but are getting 7,000 people on and off buses on a daily without getting caught.

The reality is that these people, who are walking from fucking Honduras, will take months to get here. What is also a reality is that what we should be doing is going to them and helping any way we can. These people are fleeing deadly, unlivable conditions that, for the millionth time, THE U.S. CAUSED.  Now Trump is sending troops to the border, to I guess sit on their asses for months until those people get here, and then, what? Tell them to walk back? Kill them all?

The next couple months are going to be full of increased fearmongering about this horrible "army" of families with children and babies walking to the U.S. because they have nowhere else to go and we keep blathering on about how great we are. Considering the fact that we destroyed their country, the only acceptable thing to do right now would be to send a ton of busses down to bring them all to the U.S. safely and set them up in some of the millions of empty houses we have sitting around, give them citizenship, and leave them alone. Then maybe, I dunno, we could stop ruining everybody's counties and then whining about migrants and asylum seekers.

Demonizing these people is nothing less than the work of the fucking devil.

Gif of the Day

Look at that STRUT.

We Might Be Living in the Weirdest Timeline

You know what's so weird? The second I read Republican pundits claiming that George Soros, and later others, sent pipe bombs to themselves, I was transported back to just a couple years ago when online harassment of women and other marginalized individuals was the hot button issue. Coming out of GamerGate, many of these women were in the tech/geek worlds and dealing with constant, massive, relentless harassment, getting death and rape threats, etc. And the right-wing line was the same.

"They're sending threats to themselves for attention/financial gain/to make us look bad."

Back then, concerns about threats and harassment were also dismissed as being "no big deal." "Everyone is harassed online, you just need to grow a thicker skin, deal with it." Of course, the emotional toll of constant harassment, the way it hinders online movement and professional development, and the fear that drove many women off of social media entirely was ignored. But what was also ignored was our warnings. Our pleas of "what happens when it gets worse?"

Because we knew it wouldn't end there. Harassers suffering no consequences for harassment and being successful in driving people they hate off of social media was only going to encourage them to escalate. Yet the mainstream media and many average Americans dismissed the issue as just some teen boys in their parents' basements. Harmless.

It's only been a couple years, and things have escalated to pipe bombs in the mail. The only reason none of them went off is because the FBI was somehow onto this shit before it happened. Someone could have easily died. The packages were filled with broken glass. These were meant to kill.

And now, the same words that came out of fucking GamerGaters are being used by popular right-wing pundits. "They're sending bombs to themselves to make us look bad." Were all the anonymous GamerGater fucks actually full-grown Republican pundits and politicians all along?

It's just fucking bizarre to me to see these parallels between something people dismissed as "trolling" and straight up domestic terrorism. Do I say "I told you so"? Or do I jump off a bridge because clearly this is a simulation meant to test human consciousness? (Don't worry, I am not actually at all tempted to hurt myself, just making a point.)

Part of me wanted to believe that the whole GamerGate thing was unimportant and didn't have implications for the future of humanity. I am disappointed.

And They Call Us Snowflakes

The mass mailing of pipe bombs to Democrat politicians and also Robert DiNero for some reason is uhhhhhhhh fuckin' wild, yeah? I don't know what the perpetrator hoped to get out of it other than mass sympathy for Democrats, even if any of their bombs had worked. But right-wing terrorists will be right-wing terrorists, I guess.

Meanwhile, you've got Republican pundits everywhere calling this a false flag operation. I'm not just talking about Alex Jones. This is what I mean when I talk about post-reality America. Something happens that's politically inconvenient to you? Just deny it. Say they did it to themselves. Democrats couldn't pull off an election against the literally worst human being alive but sure, they orchestrated a fake mass bombing campaign against themselves.

The best part is all the fuckers saying "Republicans don't do this kind of thing." Uhhhhh ask all those abortion clinics Republicans have bombed if Republicans do this kind of thing.

Republicans don't care about reality, about fairness, about morality, about basic human decency, none of it. All they care about is their own power and they will do and say anything to get it. Playing by the rules of reality wasn't working for them anymore so they're skewing reality, gaslighting, and fucking with people's heads 24/7. Anything bad that comes out of it can be dismissed via victim blaming and they can just keep on their merry way. They don't care who dies in the process as long as it's not them or someone who can give them power.

Nothing is sacred. They have no souls.

Thankfully, there are many people out there who are not like them and who are working to bring joy to their fellow human beings every single day. Like whoever did this:

I don't care who you are, that's funny. Fartenberry.

What is even funnier, in the most awful way possible, is that Jeff tweeted that yesterday. The same day that news about all the fucking pipe bombs was breaking. He's seriously trying to say that someone putting googly eyes on his political signs and changing his name to Fartenberry is "political violence" on the same level as attempted murder.

And they call us snowflakes.

I couldn't resist:

Not sorry.

Gif of the Day

Fanged baby.

We Must Protect Trans Civil Rights

This issue deserves more than to be a part of one post. The attack on trans civil rights is unacceptable and must be met with mass resistance. Any reversal on the Obama era expansion of gender rights to trans people would be unacceptable, but this is more than that. It looks to explicitly define gender by an outdated, cissexist assignment of gender at birth based on your little baby genitals.

The department argued in its memo that key government agencies needed to adopt an explicit and uniform definition of gender as determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.” The agency’s proposed definition would define sex as either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with, according to a draft reviewed by The Times. Any dispute about one’s sex would have to be clarified using genetic testing.

This would be a huge blow to the trans community, representing not just a step backward, but a step into evil, terrifying territory we've never even been in as a nation. It's like George W. Bush trying to officially define marriage to fuck over same sex couples, but worse.

Meanwhile, Trump is rushing anti-trans lawyers into the courts.

This week, they’re trying to quietly advance Allison Jones Rushing. Vying for a lifetime appointment on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals , Rushing has built her short career on promoting homophobic and transphobic prejudice, siding with dogmatic ideologues over the rights of everyday citizens.

Here is the Transgender Law Center's response to the leaked memo:

The draft memo the NYT reported on this weekend, a document written by officials at HHS, is transparently a hate-motivated response to these victories. It attempts to rewrite years of progress achieved by advocates under the Obama administration. Here, written out plain, is their attempt to erase our very existence as transgender people. This memo reveals that this administration intends nothing short of our destruction.

That's not the whole thing, please click through. Keep an eye out for protests and rallies against this coming fuckery, and/or get ready to explode when they officially try to make those changes to Title IX. And don't fucking let it go. Let's be honest. We lost on the Muslim ban and family separation at the border, because we have a Muslim ban (not as bad as the original but still a ban) and family separations are still happening. Now they're going after their own citizens. They will keep escalating until we stop them.

Gif of the Day

My laptop charger finally arrived and I once again have access to my collection of completely random gifs! What is this even from? What are those things? Who knows? I sure don't! Hahahahahahahahaha this month has been the fucking worst.

Donald Trump Called Himself a Nationalist

My laptop charger has still not arrived so I am without my collection of reaction gifs to properly express how fucked up I am over this shit.

President Trump Just Called Himself a 'Nationalist.' Here's What That Means—and Why It's So Dangerous.

Why does Esquire need to explain this shit to us? We should know that nationalism is dangerous. But everything Trump has done has been leading to this - he's been slowly escalating, getting us used to awfulness like we're frogs in a pot of slowly warming water, not even noticing when it gets close to the boiling point. This is the next step. Nationalism isn't bad, it's good! What does it matter if nationalism is the bread and butter of fascism and that nationalism always leads directly to violence against people outside of the perceived national norm - immigrants, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, trans people, Jewish people.

Speaking of the latter:

Explosive Device Is Found in Mailbox at Soros’s Home in N.Y. Suburb

The right has been increasingly evoking Soro's name as the financier for everything happening on the Left, which is a classic antisemitic trope. Rich Jewish people behind the scenes, pulling the strings. Now someone has tried to murder him. Meanwhile there are even wealthier people on the right unabashedly bankrolling Republicans, and their mailboxes remain bomb-free.

And of course:

The Trump administration reportedly wants the government to revoke civil rights protections from transgender people

Fascism is here and the country's most vulnerable populations are under attack. The right will soon be unabashedly calling themselves nationalists. And then, what's the big deal if they're white nationalists? What really is the problem with fascism? If we're going to be the best nation, shouldn't we only have the best people? And who do you think that the right will decide are the best kind of people?

It's time to rise up hard again. Like we did during the attempted Muslim bans, like we did during the bathroom debate, like we did when we first found out about the mass imprisonment of migrant Latinx children. And we need to have extra urgency this time, because Donald Trump just called himself a nationalist and instructed his followers to do the same.

It's fucking wild to write in this blog five days a week about how Donald Trump is a nationalist, to think that so many people, including friends and family, probably think I'm exaggerating, over-reacting, maybe fearmongering, perhaps hysterical, over-dramatic, just looking for things to get upset about because I need to distract myself from my misery. And I definitely do need to distract myself from my misery, but Donald Trump being a nationalist and nobody listening is my misery. I distract myself with Hulu and video games.

Now, on Monday, October 22, 2018, Donald Trump has said "I am a nationalist" while calling Democrats "globalists" - an antisemitic dogwhistle commonly used by white nationalists and neo-nazis. This happened yesterday, and I didn't find out until this morning. It rather looks like the U.S. is going to shrug this off. We have a nationalist for a president, folks. Logically we should all be dropping everything to march on the White House, drag him out, glue feathers all over his body, and set him adrift on a piece of wood on the Atlantic. But we're frogs in an ever-warming pot of water, and soon some of us will be literally fucking dead.

No Country for Proud Boys on the Unpopular Front

So about yesterday. My cheap crappy laptop charging cord died on Sunday so I had to rush order a new cheap crappy laptop charging cord. It was supposed to get here yesterday but because Amazon is full of LIES and OWES ME $3.99 FOR SHIPPING I now have to blog on my boyfriend's computer, which cannot even fit on my lap.

But anyway, as promised, here is that podcast I was featured in:

No Country for Proud Boys w/Lindsey Weedston

We talk about being a woman playing online video games, my South Park article, and the absolutely weirdness of the "alt-right," including their violent street gang, the Proud Boys.

Bonus! I also had an article published at Ravishly yesterday. This one is quite personal, but if you've ever wondered about whether or not I'm a survivor, this will not really answer that question but whatever enjoy:

To All Those Who Don't Know If They've Been Sexually Assaulted

Memory is a funny thing.

I will hopefully blog again later today, as there are some THINGS we need to DISCUSS, AMERICA. But I also have to deal with this headache involving license plates thanks to FedEx, which is also worthless. Apparently nobody can figure out how to get things here. Happy Tuesday.

Gif of the Day

Post-Reality America

I've got an extra special treat coming for you awesome people who regularly or sometimes read my blog. I just finished recording a podcast with Unpopular Front, a local leftist podcast by Ben Udashen. In it you'll hear me say "sorry" because we were both trying to talk at the same time, which is exactly what this blog is supposed to be teaching me not to do. But also, you'll hear me try to articulate in actual talking words how I feel about the rise of fascist street gangs in post-reality America.

The constant gaslighting, reality-skirting, truth-fucking-with thing that is constantly going on on the right right now, well, it turns me into a bad writer because just look at all those double words! It's difficult to articulate in any medium how the right is just constantly fucking with our heads. It has so many of us at a loss. It's like trying to fight a shadow. It's like trying to punch the little specks you see floating in your vision because if you look for them. It's like trying to attack something that exists between realities. It's like trying to defend yourself from your own brain, and as a mentally ill person, I know something about that.

I don't know if there are any right-wing leaders who are actually consciously strategizing this shit or if it just evolved into something that works so they keep doing it. But what we're up against is a president who will say something on camera, so that it's undeniable that it happened, and then he'll say it didn't happen. He'll just straight up lie. Not only lie, but lie about something that you cannot possibly get away with. And he does it because his base will support him no matter what. At this point he'd have to veer far left for them to stop supporting him. So he just looks reality in the eye and says "you don't exist." That's our president right now.

And you have a federal governing body controlled by people who are doing the same thing, perhaps in smaller, less-blatant respects, but they do it. They deny things you can't deny. They spit in the face of straight facts. Then they hold up wild conspiracy theories with no actual supporting evidence as truth.

Then you have these various groups that are doing their dirty work, from Proud Boys to your everyday fascist internet troll, operating within a bizarre meme culture that I believe is not only impossible to understand, it's not meant to be understood. It's just a constant blurring of reality to keep people confused. It's also handy to them because those who at least somewhat know how to navigate this Wonderland of ugly frogs and racial slurs can signal to one another. It's like a coded language of ever-shifting new ways to call people snowflakes or whatever, and you have to be really involved to keep up. I couldn't pass myself off as one of them because I would have no clue what the fuck they're talking about when they say shit like "Pinochet did nothing wrong."

Truth, reality, hypocrisy - none of that matters to them. In fact, that shit is inconvenient. Maybe it's a result of facts being so accessible thanks to the internet. They can't just go around promoting old, utterly debunked racial pseudoscience anymore. We can google that shit. So they've just resorted to confusing the shit out of us. You can't argue with someone who has zero allegiance to truth and reality. So they "win" when you refuse to or quit in the middle out of total frustration.

What they're doing is making it impossible to use our words against them. And that really only leaves violence. In the case of the Proud Boys, that works in their favor because they basically worship violence. They want a more violent society. But probably not one in which they lose and end up getting their own asses kicked. I'm not saying I want a more violent society, because I don't even like to work out and I do not like confrontation of any kind. But they aren't leaving people with much choice. If they don't want to play by the rules, if they don't actually want any kind of civil society, then may they reap what they sow.

Request for Donations

Remember early last month when I wrote about turning 30 and everything working out for me? Well, my professional life kind of collapsed this month, and now I am basically unemployed. I'm a freelancer with zero clients.

I will ultimately be fine, but I am still climbing out of a depression that makes it a bit more difficult to look for work (understatement) and, you know, it's a good time to donate if you were thinking about it. Also I deserve payment for my labor, feminism, etc. You know the drill.

The best way to donate to me is through Paypal, and here is my link.

Otherwise you could donate through my Patreon.

Shoutout to my one Patron, who is amazing and revived my dreams of just blogging like this for a living.

Small, one-time donations are also wonderful, as any donation lifts my spirits.

I'm thinking about changing this blog to Revolutionary Feminism straight on blogger for now and then migrating to WordPress later, if I ever again find some semblance of financial security. We need a whole lot more than to not be sorry. Revolution now, woo! Come on, we're all sick to death of struggling to survive, right? It doesn't need to be like this. Just reach out and take my hand...

I just realized I can look through every gif I've ever used on this blog holy shit. So many great gifs. How can you live without these gifs? If you're reading these posts on Tumblr without clicking through, you're really missing out, by the way. I can't find a program that will auto-post to Tumblr that can post the images on Tumblr along with the text. If you were wondering.

Have a wonderful day, fine readers. Destroy capitalism.

When you tell a rich white guy "no."

Your Violent Fascist Street Gangs Are Here

Over the weekend, "Proud Boys" and their buddies in Patriot Prayer violently attacked people, as they always do whenever they get together. At the same time, Portland police revealed that prior to a Patriot Prayer rally/march that was guaranteed to draw counter-protesters, cops found and "redirected" a group of PP dudes with a "cache" of weapons including "long guns" from the roof of a parking structure right above the rally site.

Apparently, because these guys had a conceal carry permit, they were free to go. Despite having a "cache" of guns, which, like, how do you conceal that many guns? How do you get to a point in this country where a group of guys from a violent gang can hang out with a cache of guns at a sniper point over a planned rally and the only thing that the police will do is say "move along"? Why is it that black men and boys get killed for holding toy guns and members of a white supremacist group can't be touched until they start shooting to kill?

I mean, yeah, I know why. But fucking hell, Portland PD. Really? This happened back in early August, by the way. They hid this from the public until now. Maybe Portland citizens would have liked to be warned that Patriot Prayer activity is a serious mass shooting risk? Maybe???????

Anyway, over in New York, members of the Proud Boys went out after their leader, who can't seem to not look like a cartoon supervillain, gave a speech about how he wanted to kill someone with a sword. They roamed the streets, as they do, in a mob pumped up on toxic masculinity and attacked anyone who stood up to them in any way. They viciously beat someone on camera, with police nearby, because the person snatched a MAGA hat off of one of their greasy heads. According to witnesses, the mob had a fucking police escort, yet cops did nothing as Proud Boys attacked and beat multiple individuals, shouting homophobic slurs and celebrating after each cowardly group attack.

It's only now, after national outrage, that the NYPD claims to be "seeking" individual Proud Boys involved in these brutal assaults. We'll see if anyone is even arrested.

What we can be sure of is the fact that we now officially have our latest brand of fascist street thugs going out and attacking anyone who they perceive to be against them and their glorious leader, Lord Dampnut.

Violent gangs that go out and attack people in the name of fascism with or without official sanction from fascist politicians appear any time a fascist regime arises. Probably the first example that pops into your head are the Brown Shirts from the Third Reich. I have been told by people who are much better educated in history than I am that the creation and proliferation of the Proud Boys is very similar to that of the Brown Shirts.

The twisted thing about the Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer is that they operate via constant obfuscation of reality. Doing so allows them to only think they are winning. They want to attack people. They're aching to prove their masculinity via violence. That is blatantly written in the Proud Boys bylaws. So if they march through the streets and people stand up to them, they get an excuse to commit violence. They win. If we let them march through the streets unchallenged, they still win, because to them that means everybody is too afraid to stand up to them.

This comes combined with the concept of Schrodinger's Douchebag, where they are simultaneously racist and not racist, sexist and not sexist, joking and not joking, until they get a reaction. This allows them to claim that they are operating within acceptable societal norms while still promoting their misogynistic, white supremacist agenda. If you declare them racist, then ha ha, you're a [insert ableist slur here] who doesn't get humor. If you don't, they keep on being racist and converting more disaffected men to white nationalism.

It's a constant gaslighting hell that makes it impossible to ever argue with them. The only option left to us is to not bother even talking to them and instead make sure attacking people in the streets is not worth the trouble for them. Getting the police to arrest them is not a good option in that respect because the police are so clearly on their side. The only option then is to fight back. If you don't want to fight, you'd best be supporting the antifa black bloc folks willing to do it for you.

Actually, it's not the only option. These thugs will slip back into the sewers of society as soon as the fascist Trump regime ends. Violent nationalist gangs are a symptom of fascism. But unless we're willing to end it violently, we have to wait until at least November 6. A blue takeover of both the House and Senate might demoralize these thugs enough to slow down attacks like we saw over last weekend. They also might push back harder. I doubt they will disappear entirely until the Trump regime ends.

Until then, be prepared. Be ready for intimidation at polling sites in November. If you're a person of color, a woman, and or LGBTQ+, keep an eye on their activity and try not to be walking the streets alone. If you can, learn some self-defense. And for the love of fuck, support antifa. They are our protectors in these times.

"God should fear girls with battle scars."

Flawless Feminist Victory

This is a thing of beauty:

This New Feminist Antifa Group Is Taking on the Far-Right

Mmmmmm yeah that's the stuff.

When a British far-right group announced its plans to march in London on Saturday, women on the left knew they had to push back. Enter: Feminist Anti-Fascism Assembly (FAF), a new feminist antifascist bloc made up of a coalition of feminist organizations, trade unions, migrant rights groups, and anti-racist organizers.
On an unseasonably warm autumnal afternoon, FAF and other antifascist groups held back the Democratic Foorball Lads Alliance (DFLA) as they attempted to march through the streets of central London. The DFLA are a splinter group from the Football Lads Alliance, a British street movement of soccer fans.

It's just too bad that these badass feminists are in the U.K. and not in the U.S. Not yet, anyway.

Antifascist organizers kept up a relentless chant of “no pasaran” (“they shall not pass” in Spanish), their ranks powerfully headed up by an assembly of women and nonbinary supporters. The DFLA hurled racist slurs, beer cans, and chants of “God Save the Queen” and “Rule Britannia” in response.
Finally, the antifascist bloc edged out the far right faction and continued its march along Waterloo Bridge. FAF organizers described the day as a success, but called on more people to join the movement of resistance against far-right ideology.

Liberal feminist? Nah.

Radical feminism? Nope.

Anti-fascist feminism?

The White House is actively considering plans that could again separate parents and children at the U.S.-Mexico border, hoping to reverse soaring numbers of families attempting to cross illegally into the United States, according to several administration officials with direct knowledge of the effort.

Gif of the Day

Halloween is coming.

How Are Pro-Lifers Being Pro-Life Today?

So this is the kind of response that Republicans, including Republican politicians, have had to the confirmation of Brett Kavanagh as a Supreme Court Justice:

The whole thing about the coathangers is that it's a particularly brutal example of how women attempt to abort their pregnancies themselves using unsafe, potentially deadly methods. Because women and other people who can become pregnant will do what they need to do in order to maintain their bodily autonomy. Comments like the one from Councilman Eric Barber here prove that so-called "pro-life" people understand this.

They know that outlawing abortions won't stop abortions. The embryos and fetuses that they insist on calling "babies" don't actually matter to them, as you can see by how they are encouraging "liberals" to abort them anyway by using incredibly unsafe methods. What they really want is for poor people to die.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned, safe abortions will still be available in many states and outside the country, but only people with money will be able to access them. Meanwhile, us poorsies will have to resort to methods that have killed many, many pregnant people. And many of us will die. And Republicans are happy about this. Because they want us to either be utterly subservient or dead. That's all they've ever wanted.

The Supreme Court Just Took the Right to Vote From Native Americans

The Supreme Court has upheld a law passed by North Dakota that says only people with street addresses can vote. This is bullshit for many reasons, including taking the right to vote away from homeless people. This is a big step back toward the original intent of our founders, which was to only allow white male landowners to vote.

But there's another aspect to this decision that most of my fellow white people are probably unaware of. North Dakota has a large indigenous population and several reservations. The reservations in this country are very often (maybe completely) areas of abject poverty that lack paved roads, electricity, indoor plumbing, etc. The houses there often don't have U.S. addresses, and the USPS will only give them PO boxes.

That means that a huge portion of the Native American population of North Dakota just had their vote stolen from them.

Supreme Court Enables Mass Disenfranchisement of North Dakota’s Native Americans

The voter ID law was introduced just months after Senator Heidi Heitkamp, a Democrat, eked out a narrow upset victory in 2012, winning by less than 3,000 votes. Republican lawmakers responded by passing restrictive voter ID legislation that all but guaranteed that large numbers of Native Americans — who tend to vote Democratic — wouldn’t be able to participate in the political process. Specifically, the law requires voters to bring to the polls an ID that displays a “current residential street address” or other supplemental documentation that provides proof of such an address.
This may seem like an innocuous requirement, but in practice, it’s likely to disenfranchise thousands of Native Americans, many of whom live on reservations in rural areas and don’t have street addresses. Since the U.S. Postal Service doesn’t provide residential mail delivery in remote areas, many members of North Dakota’s Native American tribes list their mailing addresses, like P.O. boxes, on their IDs. And some also don’t have supplemental documentation, like a utility bill or bank statement, because of homelessness or poverty. Now, because the Supreme Court refused to block the law, people who show up at their polling station with a P.O. box on their ID will be turned away.

Native Americans were the last marginalized group to gain the right to vote in the U.S. Now they're the first to lose it in our evolving fascist state.

Guest Post: Please Register and Vote in November!

Kate Harveston is a political writer from Pennsylvania. Her favorite topics are feminist-focused, but she writes on a wide variety of social and cultural issues. If you enjoy her work, you can follow her on Twitter or visit her blog, Only Slightly Biased.

Just a few short days ago, female survivors of sexual assault watched in horror as a suspected sexual predator was appointed to the highest court in the land. As one such survivor explained, "My emotions vacillate between intense rage to abject despair. But this entire horror show has done one thing: it's convinced me that voting in November is a must."
This year's midterms are critical in determining the direction of our nation. Those of us on the left have watched in horror for the past two years as the Trump administration strips away rights from women, members of the LGBTQ community and some of our most vulnerable groups — the children, elderly and the disabled.
What's up for Grabs?
Many people who vote in presidential elections fail to vote in the midterms. But no one should make this mistake. The midterms very much determine the course our nation will take.
While the president does have power, it is the members of Congress who draft and pass new legislation. And in 2018, electing a Democratic majority to both the House and Senate would not only deliver a valuable message to President Trump, but it would also provide a check on his power.
All 435 seats of the U.S. House of Representatives are at stake in the midterms, and 35 U.S. Senate seats are up for grabs on November 6, 2018. If either the House or Senate flips, it will turn into a boon for Democrats. However, should they fail, and should Republicans remain in power, the Trump agenda will continue unchecked with ramifications continuing for decades.
What's at Stake?
In two words — a lot, including the future of the Democratic party.
If the Democrats successfully seize control of either the House or the Senate, they can work vigorously to oppose the Republican's legislative agenda. At the very least, they can act as a check against Republicans further pressing forward with tax cuts for the wealthiest of Americans and the complete abolishment of the Affordable Care Act.
While that alone would put health care coverage out of reach for millions of Americans, Republicans additionally are seeking cuts to social welfare programs. They have even proposed cuts to Social Security and Medicare at a time when millions of seniors are already barely getting by.
Collusion and Sexual Assault
If Democrats gain control of the House, they could call for further probes, not only into Trump's alleged collusion with Russia to impact the outcome of the 2016 election but into allegations of sexual assault allegedly committed by the president. In the wake of Kavanaugh's confirmation, this would draw a collective sigh of relief from victims everywhere who very much feel as if those in elected office simply do not care about the seriousness of sexual assault.
If Democrats manage to flip the Senate, they can put a serious check on Trump's judicial nomination process. This would hold true not only for future Supreme Court appointments Trump may make but also other federal judges. In addition, should Democrats sweep either or both the House or Senate, Democrats would then also chair all the various committees, such as the Senate Judiciary Committee.
What We've Got to Lose in Healthcare
Should Democrats fail to take control of either House or Senate, seniors and those with disabilities are almost certain to face cuts to their Social Security benefits. Millions are predicted to lose access to health coverage or have it priced out of their reach if Democrats lose control.
This includes members of the gig economy who work on an independent contractor basis. This will also include many workers at small businesses whose employers, once freed of the employer mandate, may choose to no longer offer health benefits.
If Trump doesn't fire Jeff Sessions first, medical marijuana patients may once again become open to prosecution simply for using their medication to control their conditions. And a Republican-led Congress is unlikely to enact legislation allowing medical marijuana use to continue.
The Environment, LGBTQ Rights and Gun Violence
Should Democrats fail to take control of either House or Senate, the impact to the environment may become irreversible. By pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement, Trump made it clear that he intends to do nothing about climate change. This counters a UN study that stated an increase of temperature of just one degree might turn into enough to kill hundreds of millions of people.
Women and LGBTQ individuals may lose many of their hard-fought civil liberties if the Democrats lose. The current Supreme Court is almost certain to uphold new abortion restrictions that would effectively destroy a woman's right to choose. States could potentially again bring new cases before the court challenging the legitimacy of gay marriage.
If Republicans maintain control of both House and Senate, young people can rest assured that their elected officials will continue to do nothing but offer meaningless thoughts and prayers when they or their classmates are gunned down in school. In fact, gun violence may increase with Republicans' absurd idea to bring more guns into the classroom by arming teachers.
Exercise Your Right
With so much at stake, it simply isn't okay to sit on the couch or throw one's hands up in despair. We've got a shot remaining to change things and take back our democracy. Register to vote today! On November 6, get out there and exercise your right to vote. While it may seem like a stretch to say it will be the last time that you can exercise that right, there may never come a time when it would count more.

I know the Kavanagh thing was a whole bucket of hell. And we all need to recover. Unfortunately, there's no time, because there are 5,000 other horrible things going on.

The one I'd really like to return focus to is the child migrant detention issue. Children are still being separated from their families at the border, and thousands of children are still being detained, including in those tent prison camps we heard about months ago. Thousands of children are currently in prison camps, separated from their parents, enduring god knows what. And it's horrifying beyond belief.

Case in point, this story about a 5-year-old who is now scarred for life.

The Five-Year-Old Who Was Detained at the Border and Persuaded to Sign Away Her Rights

She was taken from her family because she crossed the border with her grandmother rather than a parent. While in custody, some unknown border agent had the 5-YEAR-OLD CHILD "sign" a document waiving her right to a hearing that could have gotten her returned to her family sooner. The absurdity of having tiny little children represent themselves in court and sign legal documents has continued this entire time. They never even reunited all of the children with their families that they were ordered to.

You can't just forget about an issue after getting a minor win. This administration does not give a shit about rules, court orders, or basic human decency. We know that. I know it's impossible to keep on their asses about everything because there is way too much, but please, let's not let this country once again be one that allows racist internment camps to happen. I cannot stand the idea that we have prison camps for kids, and I really hope you feel the same. I hate that this atrocity is happening in my lifetime. We made them change something with national outrage. We have to keep it up.

Gif of the Day

This is a funny prank but also if anyone did this to me when my makeup was done I'd be pissed.

Prison Alternatives: Restorative Justice

As you may or may not know, I'm a prison abolitionist. We tried to reform the prison system, but over time it has reverted back to a place to store "undesirables" in horrific conditions that just barely keep them alive without any semblance of rehabilitation, plus also slavery. Prisons began as just another way to enslave black people. There's no reforming something born out of such evil.

People tend to hear "prison abolition" and freak out because they think it means immediately throwing open all the prison doors and releasing all the boogeymen into their neighborhoods. This is a result of propaganda. It's also completely inaccurate. The prison abolition movement is about working toward prison alternatives and building toward a society that no longer needs prisons.

It can be difficult to envision alternatives due to the fact that we've all grown up in a society that takes it for granted that prisons have to exist. As though prisons are as inevitable as death or natural as air. They're not. Case in point, people are already coming up with alternatives.

A different path for confronting sexual assault

This article is amazing because it speaks to a personal conflict I have between wanting to abolish prisons and wanting to punish sexual predators. I absolutely understand the anger and the desire to get revenge and to hurt back. But objectively, we all know that what's better for everyone in the long run is restorative justice.

Restorative justice brings those who have harmed, their victims, and affected families and communities into processes that repair the harm and rebuild relationships. This can take several forms, such as peacemaking circles and conferencing models. Restorative justice can help resolve nearly any kind of wrongdoing or conflict, including serious harms such as robbery, burglary, assault — even sexual and intimate partner violence, and even murder.
The process invites truth-telling on all sides by replacing punitive approaches to wrongdoing in favor of collective healing and solutions. Rather than asking, “What law was broken, who broke it, and how should they be punished?” restorative justice asks, “Who was harmed? What do they need? Whose obligation is it to meet those needs?” At its best, restorative justice produces consensus-based plans through face-to-face dialogue that meets the needs of everyone impacted, beginning with the crime survivor.

Read the entire article, because it's all amazing. This kind of thing could go such a long way in ending rape culture and toxic masculinity. It's so much better than a justice system in which two sides compete like it's a fucking sport. Where defense lawyers are encouraged to obscure the truth in order to "win." This is why lawyers got the reputation of being sleazy. It's not actually their fault, this is just how our current justice system works. But it doesn't need to be that way. The current system isn't ideal just because it exists like that right now.

We can have something so much better. You just have to let yourself imagine it.

The Tweet That Killed Me

I don't know who this person is but the rest of their Twitter account is gold. I aspire to writing like this. I mean. This is just. It. Those are The Words. They found them. I am so grateful and jealous.

Also there is more to that thread but I think this tweet stands so well alone. Trials and hearings on sexual assault where the victim has to testify will henceforth be known as soul blenders. And hey, now I have another use for the tag "what happened to your soul" other than using it every time I talk about any Republican.

Fuck yes.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day!

The fact that anyone is still celebrating Columbus is fucked up!

In 2014, the city of Seattle (where I almost reside) did away with Columbus Day and now celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day by, I dunno, doing nothing but patting themselves on the back for being woke? If you want to do something real to make up for the fact that you live on land stolen from an indigenous tribe that was nearly wiped out by us white people because we wanted their land for free (assuming you're not of the Duwamish tribe) and you're in the Seattle area, check out the Real Rent Duwamish project!

Real Rent calls on people who live and work in Seattle to make rent payments to the Duwamish Tribe. Though the city named for the Duwamish leader Chief Seattle thrives, the Tribe has yet to be justly compensated for their land, resources, and livelihood.
You can do something today to stand in solidarity with First Peoples of this land by paying Real Rent.
All funds go directly to Duwamish Tribal Services (DTS) to support the revival of Duwamish culture and the vitality of the Duwamish Tribe.

You can choose how much you contribute, or they have a donation calculator to help you figure out what you can reasonably afford. My income right now is very low, but once I find some stability, I plan to start paying rent to the Duwamish tribe, as I should, being a direct descendant of colonizers.

All of us white people have benefitted from living on land stolen via genocide. Give a little of that back.

I have no idea.

Benchmarks of Post-Reality America, Part 23905739238578943

I've just got a collection of weirdness and beautiful shit that I need to share that are making my already tenuous connection to stable reality seem much looser, so here you go.

First, I woke up to find this video circulating:

Now I'm caught between the terror of feeling like there really is a god and desperately trying to figure out if this was some kind of brilliantly staged attempt to distract people or get them to take Trump less seriously, or otherwise quell the currently enraged masses ahead of the final Kavanagh vote. The latter is also terrifying because I don't like the idea that Trump or his puppetmasters are that smart. But seriously, it's just so perfect. The length of the toilet paper. The wafting. The way it detaches right at the top of the stairs and lays there in view of the lingering camera. Can we verify that this wasn't a computer-generated piece of toilet paper? It's too perfect. My brain refuses to believe that this could have just happened. It's either that or divine intervention.

I also woke up to an email from Google letting me know that one of my blog posts has been removed from Google+ for violating the User Content and Conduct Policy. The listed reason was "Harassment, Bullying, and Threats."

I don't actually ever use my G+ account, but because Blogger is owned by Google, my posts are automatically published there. This email does not give any indication as to what comment was removed other than a random string of letters and numbers that are no help at all. But neither of my posts from yesterday are up on my account, and I'm wondering if it was the Mark Judge being a Gamergater post. Part of me desperately hopes that Mark has been frantically googling his own name and somehow stumbled across my blog and reported me. Either that or it's some pathetic Gamergate holdout googling "Gamergate" and pouring through the results daily to report anyone who says anything bad about it in a fevered state of total hypocrisy.

Or it could be some old post. It's hard to say.

Finally, because I hate job searching and being in a state of flux, I tweeted HIRE ME on my personal/professional Twitter account today and got this:

I replied with a simple "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH."

First of all, I'm already all over better job search sites, Monster. Second, there's something so dystopian about a shitty job search company reaching out to me on Twitter via some intern that searches Twitter for the phrase "hire me" all day (or has some robot program doing that) because I shouted my desperation to the universe.

That's my day so far. How are you?

Just let me stare at this and forget about the bullshit going on in the world right now.

White Guy Shoots 7 Cops, Kills 1, Crickets Can Be Heard From Space

Oh, and the suspect was shot but arrested alive.

One dead, six other law enforcement officers shot before suspect taken into custody, SC cops say

The cop who was killed was a black man, Terrence Carraway.

Remember all that hysteria about black people killing cops? Remember all those black men and boys who did nothing to police yet were killed by police rather than arrested alive?

Did you know that this happened yesterday and the only reason I know about it is because I came across this one single tweet?

Sometimes being a police officer is a dangerous job, but I guess that doesn't matter when the people creating the danger are white men.

Mark Judge Was a Fucking Gamergater, End Me

By far the worst thing about existence right now is the fact that the fucking asshole misogynistic nerds that I used to argue with for hours as they tried to convince me that feminism was ruining video games and, by extension, the world, are now or always have been in positions of power or are close to people in positions of power.

Mark Judge? The dude who was an accessory to Kavanagh's attempted rape? He was a fucking Gamergate drone. Maybe still is, for all I know.

A couple of days ago, a Twitterer called @LasagnaGarden noticed that back in July 2015 Kavanaugh’s pal (and alleged attempted-rape assistant) Mark Judge had written an article for a little-known, now-defunct culture blog called Acculturated attacking Anita Sarkeesian and praising her Gamergate critics.

Look at this, look at this shit he wrote:

"gamers’ cogent counterarguments have made Anita Sarkeesian and Feminist Frequency irrelevant. Gamers keep gaming, and game makers keep making games. The controversy is ebbing, and soon the name Anita Sarkeesian will be a footnote in pop culture history."

At least we can all take pleasure in the fact that A) Anita Sarkeesian was never trying to stop gamers from gaming or game makers from making games because she is in fact a gamer and was just being a cultural critic and B) Feminist Frequency is still going strong and Sarkeesian is not only very relevant in her field, but was made so much more relevant by the constant Gamergate harassment she has endured and continues to endure to this day.

Mark Judge, you fucking moldy lampshade.

But still, it's little comfort, and I still long for death.

If Judge’s first Gamergate post was a bog-standard Gamergatey “rebuttal” to a drastically and misleadingly simplified caricature of Sarkeesian’s arguments — pretty much the dictionary definition of a straw man — his second post on Sarkeesian was far worse, a creepy defense of male gamers’ sexual fetishization of pixelated hotties that looks even creepier in the wake of the Kavanaugh revelations.

I don't even want to read it. So I won't. I'm pretty sure I can guess like 95% of what he said, anyway. The arguments were always the same and are still the same.

This revelation alongside the images of Kavanagh literally screaming and crying over an interview that went awry for a position that could allow him to change the political landscape of the entire country for many decades when he should have to defend himself in court for the CRIME he committed (multiple crimes actually) is causing my soul to attempt to escape my body and leave this intensely absurd plan of existence.

The same kind of dude who was screaming and crying and dedicating huge portions of their lives to harassing women over fucking video games are now throwing a tantrum over being held accountable for multiple acts of sexual assault rather than just being handed a position on the Supreme Court of the United States of America. I guess I should have seen this coming, but my brain can only process so much absurdity.

You laugh but we all did this in the pool as kids.

I Want Everyone to Be Happy and Secure

Yesterday, I woke up to the news that my main freelance client, the company from which I was getting the bulk of my income, is "tightening" its budget and they will therefore not "need" any freelance writers anymore. Yes, that is why there was no blog post yesterday.

Also yesterday, I came upon a simple image on Tumblr:

In our late-stage capitalist society, being "competitive" is seen as a good thing. It's held up as an ideal. Not being competitive is seen as odd at best, and more often viewed as a weakness, a flaw of character, laziness, etc. I would never admit to being non-competitive in a job interview, because I know it would be counted against me. But the truth is that I am not usually competitive. I don't care about "winning" or generally being better than anyone unless I have something to prove, like when I'm playing video games with dudes and feel that annoying pressure to prove that women can be good at the video games.

This has been true for my entire life. I never liked the pressure of competing and preferred things to be casual. I played soccer for 10 years as a kid, and I was pretty good. But once you get to a certain age, I was told, you basically either have to go into a competitive league or fuck off, because recreational leagues are for little kids. The competitive nature of "club" soccer squeezed out any pleasure I got from the game. I couldn't enjoy playing know that if my team lost, I'd get yelled at by some spindly little shit with an inferiority complex from his unfulfilled sports star dreams.

Now faced once again with the prospect of looking for work, I'm reminded of the absurdity of "club sports" for children. Only instead of being on a team, I'm on my own, battling in a free-for-all against dozens, maybe hundreds of other applicants every time I apply for work, and what is at stake is my ability to afford rent and food.

I hate feeling like I have to be dishonest about myself in order to survive. Very few people out there actually want to hire a cynical, non-competitive commie who is, in fact, much more of a follower than a leader and has no interest in "managing" others because the very idea of being anyone's "boss" is fucking bizarre and a little gross. I also really hate feeling like a stray dog fighting other dogs for scraps. I especially hate knowing that for every job I get, many other people, some of whom are much more desperate than I am, didn't get it and have to continue being desperate.

I don't want to be a part of this barbaric society in which the poor are forced to fight each other for the limited resources made available to us because the few rich people are hoarding literally half of all the planet's resources for themselves, leaving not enough for the rest of us. I want a society where everyone gets what they need to be safe and healthy and happy. Everyone. Not just those of us who are privileged, lucky, and/or ruthless enough to grab the scraps for ourselves while others go hungry. I want everyone to be able to pursue happiness and fulfillment freely, without being constantly hounded by the possibility of homelessness, starvation, and bad credit.

I don't want up to have to "make it." I want everybody to be taken care of. One person going hungry because they don't have enough money for food is unacceptable. That's why I hate capitalism. Because capitalism demands that some people struggle, suffer, and starve. And that "some" will eventually become "most."

I still don't actually know if I'm a communist or an anarcho-communist or an anarchist or what, because I'm still not educated enough. But I've lived capitalism, and that's enough to make me anti-capitalist. And you can shout numbers of people killed by so-called communist leaders at me, but capitalism by its nature kills millions yearly. At least communism, by design, is supposed to take care of people. Yes, men have taken advantage of situations in which communist nations arise to grab power and then turn out to be massive assholes who don't care if poor people die and will kill to keep themselves in power, but THAT IS THE EXACT SITUATION WE HAVE NOW. That is our capitalist society right now. But instead of people being like "this is not how it's supposed to be" people are like "well that's just how the world works." No, that's how capitalism works. And I refuse to accept that.
