That's a Lot of Overlooked Dead People

So holy shit, this UW study.

Police killings twice as common as reported, UW study finds

Yeah, quick question. How the fuck do you not report half of all people killed by police? HALF?

A new study has found that police kill twice as many people as reported in official statistics, and that black men are 3 1/2 times more likely to be killed by police than white men.
The study, carried out by the University of Washington and Cornell University, used a variety of data sources and found that police officers are responsible for about 8 percent of all homicides of adult males in the United States - or about 2.8 homicides every day on average.

That is so many fucking homicides and also I'm impressed that Komo News had the guts to call them homicides. Well done.

But also, holy shit.

It is incredible to me that people are still trying to claim that police killings aren't as bad as the media says it is AND that there isn't a racial element to these killings. They're twice as bad as the media was reporting. And god damn, 3.5 times more likely to be killed by a cop if you're black. That's huge. Just take a moment to think about that.

How did this gap in data happen?

Past research on police killings has been limited by the absence of systematic data, Edwards said. Such data, primarily collected through the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ Arrest-Related Deaths program or the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Report, are widely acknowledged as unreliable due to limited scope and voluntary data reporting.
“Police departments are not required by law to report deaths that occur due to officer action and may have strong incentives to be sensitive with data due to public affairs and community relations,” he said. “Effectively, we don’t know what’s happening if all we look at is the official data.”

Oh yeah.

Sometimes even I have moments where I think "maybe we're too hard on the police." Then I read shit like this. They really get to be a special class of people, don't they? A special, ultra-protected class of people who get to carry guns and basically have a license to kill.

Abolish the police.
