I'm so tired of powerful, privileged people saying shitty things and then blaming others for the harm caused in their shitty non-apologies. Like it's so easy to just admit you fucked up and say I'm sorry. It really won't kill you, whereas blaming the people who heard your comment for supposedly receiving it into their brains wrong will just make people hate you more.
I'm sure you heard about irrelevant hairy white raisin Grammy president Neil Portnow saying that if women want to get Grammy awards they should "step up" because I guess he thinks that this year all the men were just better and that's why almost none of the awards went to women. Yeah all our problems are because we're just not trying hard enough. Is it any wonder that in his "apology" he blamed us again?
Grammys president says he regrets comment that women need to ‘step up’ to win more awards
On Tuesday morning, the Recording Academy released a statement from Portnow in which he stated, “I regret that I wasn’t as articulate as I should have been.” It also explains, in part:
"Regrettably, I used two words, ‘step up,’ that, when taken out of context, do not convey my beliefs and the point I was trying to make.
Our industry must recognize that women who dream of careers in music face barriers that men have never faced. We must actively work to eliminate these barriers and encourage women to live their dreams and express their passion and creativity through music. We must welcome, mentor, and empower them. Our community will be richer for it. I regret that I wasn’t as articulate as I should have been in conveying this thought."
Take my fist out of context and shove it against your face, Neil.
People like Neil say their words were "taken out of context" and 9 times out of 10 it's bullshit. Guess what, put Neil's words into context and it's just as offensive. All the rest of the quote reveals is that he realizes that there are unfair obstacles that women face in the industry, and he still told us to step up! So instead of just being clueless, he's putting the onus on women to overcome the obstacles that men like him put in our path. Or to remove them. To clean up the mess men left us.
That is not better, Neil. This just made me hate you.
Why can't men like this just be like "I screwed up, I shouldn't have said that, what I said was harmful and I regret that, sorry." Stop digging your own fucking graves, for fuck's sake.
