It may be time to start thinking about how we can effectively push back against authoritarianism once the last of the checks and balances have fallen. https://t.co/WApTzKz8jZ— G. Willow Wilson (@GWillowWilson) January 30, 2018
"The last of the checks and balances" fuuuuuuuuuuuck lady save us.
The difference is the steady disappearance of dissent from the public sphere. Anti-regime bloggers disappear. Dissident political parties are declared "illegal." Certain books vanish from the libraries.— G. Willow Wilson (@GWillowWilson) January 30, 2018
The genius of a true, functioning dictatorship is the way it carefully titrates justice. Once in awhile it will allow a sound judicial decision or critical op-ed to bubble up. Rational discourse is never entirely absent. There is plausible deniability.— G. Willow Wilson (@GWillowWilson) January 30, 2018
So if you're waiting for the grand moment when the scales tip and we are no longer a functioning democracy, you needn't bother. It'll be much more subtle than that. It'll be more of the president ignoring laws passed by congress. It'll be more demonizing of the press.— G. Willow Wilson (@GWillowWilson) January 30, 2018
A sizable proportion of the citizenry will support the postponement. Yes, absolutely, we must postpone elections. The opposition is corrupt! Our leader is just trying to protect us! A dictator is never without supporters.— G. Willow Wilson (@GWillowWilson) January 30, 2018
There's a bit more to the thread but this is the important part.
Lord Dampnut went into the 2016 election suggesting that it would be rigged by the left. Now he's president. Watch for when he starts saying again that Democrats/liberals are going to rig the 2020 elections. Watch for that moment he suggests, as Wilson says, that we "postpone the 2020 elections until its lawyers are finished investigating something or other." That might not be THE tipping point but it will be a tipping point. If we don't collectively and utterly lose our minds in that moment, democracy will be lost.
And like Wilson says, I hope she and I are wrong. But we need to be prepared.
Seriously. If you want to do something, spread to everyone you know the expectation of an assault on the 2020 elections. I'm also afraid that some on the left will go along with a postponing of election day because they fear Russian interference in the election and (further) hacking. It's right to raise all the concerns about that, but do not let them postpone election day. The second we let them do that, it's over. Election day will never happen. It'll be like Putin's Russia. Even if elections do happen later, opposition leaders will be arrested and supporters will "disappear."
Fight for your country or lose it.
