These ladies from Peru are fucking killing it.
These Beauty Pageant Contestants Gave Out Facts About Women's Rights As Their Measurements
First of all, they have to step up and give their measurements at these beauty pageants? Is that the same everywhere? Fucking gross. But this year, the contestants in Peru said "fuck that bullshit."
But in Peru, where women are getting killed in alarming numbers, aspiring beauty queens used their moment on the stage on Sunday to give a different kind of measurement: how many people have been affected by gender violence.
“My name is Camila Canicoba and I represent the department of Lima. My measurements are: 2,202 cases of femicide reported in the last nine years in my country.”
Each contestant gave some number about men's violence against women, and then they displayed newspaper clippings of articles about high profile cases. The entire thing is incredible. I recommend watching the videos.
I still disagree with the idea that beauty pageants are good in general. Yes, women should be able to wear what they want. But until fat women get to be contestants, it's still a shit show. I do, however, appreciate that thin, conventionally attractive women used this platform for good. Especially since women of color are even more prone to becoming victims of men's violence. Well done, and thank you.
