Oh Yeah and This is Happening

I'm literally at the point where the rape culture issues popping up are so infuriating and also just make me feel like basically "WHATEVER I GUESS WE'RE NEVER GOING TO BE ABLE TO HAVE ANYTHING NICE BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS EVERY TIME SO HOW ABOUT YOU JUST ALL GO DIE JUST DIE PLEASE JUMP OFF A CLIFF BECAUSE I'M TIRED OF IT."

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced Friday that she would rescind the Obama administration’s guidelines on campus sexual assault, part of an effort to strengthen protections for accused students.
The department will replace the Obama-era directives with new standards that "emphasize the importance of fairness and impartiality," a senior department official told reporters Friday, echoing a common rallying cry of advocates for students who have been accused of assault. The department released interim guidance for schools Friday, while new regulations are in the works.

The thing that gets me here is that the Obama administration "guidelines" were really barely more than just that - guidelines. Like "hey if someone says they've been raped on your campus can you pleeeease listen and not just tell them to go fuck themselves?" I think maybe their funding could be threatened but you'd have to prove that they broke the meager guidelines set out, and they were not much. Since the guidelines were set, there have still been plenty of reports of sexual assault victims getting  screwed over by college administrations, which have continued to prioritize the safety and comfort of the "accused," and of course their precious, precious tuition money.

This is just a slap in the face to all survivors. All I can figure is that it's just another checkbox on the list of everything Obama did in his eight years as president that needs to be undone for political points or generally because Obama's black. And as always, sexual assault survivors are an easy target. I mean, Betsy doesn't have to worry about being accused of rape on campus, I'm assuming, and neither does Lord Dampnut, and they of course only care about themselves. The only other explanation I can think of is that they're under pressure by rich fucks to protect their rich rapist sons from any consequences.

I'm sick of having the same fight over and over. I'm sick to death of having to explain that "the accused" don't need additional advocacy because our entire culture already advocates for them. Universities are clearly, obviously financially motivated to take their side, and the rest of the population wants to pretend that the ridiculously and horrifyingly huge rape problem on campuses and the rest of the country doesn't exist.

I posted about this on Facebook and my anarchist friend pointed out that this is why the cycle of elections is pointless and results in no real progress ever being made because every time it inevitably cycles back to Republicans, they roll any progress right back! Even the shitty, ineffectual Democrat brand of "progress." And shit, man, he's making more and more sense as time goes along.

I'm honestly still pretty sure that it's not possible to stop this train we're on. Republicans may have already made it impossible for a real Democrat majority to happen, and even if it did, with the way Dems have been shifting right, big whoop. I don't know if a third, actually leftist party is possible without total political and social collapse so that we can rebuild from scratch. And that sucks because that's going to literally kill a lot of our most vulnerable people. But as the Russia investigation becomes a joke so obscene that none of us can even look at it anymore and we plunge toward economic and perhaps nuclear disaster, I remain very pessimistic that a better solution is possible.
