I think it's officially time to change the name of the series. Because fucking hell.
First, the Democrat candidate running against Steve King in Iowa in a special election dropped out because of death threats.
Fearing for her life, Iowa Democrat abandons race to unseat GOP Rep. Steve King
She explained that beginning during her 2016 campaign, she has been receiving threats of physical violence and murder, and said that “recent events at my home” were forcing her to re-evaluate her decision to run against King.
“While some may say enduring threats are just a part of running for office, my personal safety has increasingly become a concern,” Weaver said.
Furthermore, she explained, she cannot currently risk losing her health coverage, which would disappear if she quit her current job to campaign full time. Added to that, Weaver said her mother is in poor health in Des Moines.
So a combination of death threats and because we lack affordable healthcare in this country. Yet another barrier to running a political campaign. But it gets worse.
Weaver works at the Iowa Office of Long-Term Care Ombudsman, an agency that investigates problems at nursing homes. She's a civil servant.— Matthew Chapman (@fawfulfan) June 4, 2017
And FYI, this is not a conspiracy theory. Weaver's supervisor told her, relayed from a legislator, that the cuts were to punish her.— Matthew Chapman (@fawfulfan) June 4, 2017
And of course it wasn't her fault. This is really common. Women who challenge the system face workplace retaliation ALL THE TIME.— Matthew Chapman (@fawfulfan) June 4, 2017
This is really fucked up. Threatening and intimidating someone out of campaigning against an incumbent is a serious sign of a fascist society.
Fascism sign of the day number two: A pro-Dampnut media corporation is taking over local media en mass for his re-election campaign.
Taking control of the media to put forth a constant stream of misleading propaganda? Check that one off the fascism list.
Honestly, I don't know what to do about this. And if nothing is done, we may be fucked.
