CNN, Please Stop Killing the Free Press

Sometimes I'm seriously like "is CNN secretly owned by Trump or someone associated with him to make news media that isn't 100% right-wing propaganda look bad?" Because A) that's the kind of reality we live in now, so fucked up that I have to consider conspiracies like that and B) because CNN is this kind of shit:

Three CNN journalists resign over retracted Trump-Russia story

Apparently, CNN ran a story based on an allegation by an anonymous source, and then retracted it because they decided it wasn't credible. This happens all. the. time in journalism because sources aren't always reliable but when the story looks really good, you want to run it. CNN only said that the story didn't "meet its editorial standards" so I'm left wondering, if this had been about someone less powerful, would they have ever retracted it? I doubt it.

But even if the story was bullshit, they retracted it like news outlets are supposed to do. Why in the hell did three people need to resign over it?

The swift investigation and departure of the three journalists is interpreted as a sign that CNN wants to protect itself against allegations of “fake news” from Trump and his supporters.

Seriously, guys? I don't know how much of that was pressure from CNN but either way, you're playing right into Trump's game. Don't do that! Do not. Do that. Trump is going to call you "fake news" no matter what. And even if you're perfect so that there's no evidence to support that nonsense, he and his followers will make shit up. They'll invent whatever they have to in order to support the narrative they've committed to in their minds. Why in the fuck are you playing by the made-up rules of someone who hates you for getting in his way by telling the truth rather than licking his asshole? Nobody resigns over one story being retracted. It wasn't even untrue, they just decided it didn't have enough support.

The site added that, although the investigation found the story “wasn’t solid enough” for publication, CNN has not said the story is false.

Come on, CNN. I know you're all about the money but if you keep playing his game, you'll be out of business, as well as damaging our ability to keep the press free and functional. Stop being such fucking cowards. Stop giving them ammo. Stop shooting yourselves in the foot! Be more like this guy:

Reporter snaps at Sarah Huckabee Sanders after she goes on lengthy rant bashing the press

"News outlets get to go on day after day and cite unnamed sources, use stories without sources," Sanders said. "You mentioned the [CNN] story, where they had to have reporters resign."
Brian Karem, a reporter for the Sentinel newspapers — a Washington, DC-area chain — then jumped in to voice his displeasure with the rant.
"You're inflaming everybody right here, right now, with those words," he said, pointing out that the administration has also gotten facts wrong in the past.
"Any one of us, right, are replaceable, and any one of us if we don't get it right, the audience has the opportunity to turn the channel or not read us," he continued. "You have been elected to serve for four years at least."
Karem said the press was present to "ask you questions" and that Sanders was there "to provide the answers."

I recommend watching the video, because Sanders' ashamed face is priceless.

But seriously. By not standing up to fascist anti-press bullshit, you're hurting journalism as a whole. Stop. Playing. His. Game. Before you doom us all.
