National Day of Action for Trans Women of Color

Hey why the FUCK didn't I see this until today? Clearly I'm not doing enough to follow trans women of color.

Anyway, today is indeed the National Day of Action for Trans Women of Color. It doesn't look like there was anything planned for the Seattle area anyway, which is bullshit considering the sizable LGBT+ community here. But we can still take action.

Say her name:

Mesha Caldwell
Jaquarrius Holland
Chyna Doll Depree
JoJo Striker
Ciara McElveen
Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow
Tiara Richmond

All of these trans women of color have been murdered in the year 2017. Violent racism and transmisogyny continue to imperil the lives of of this incredibly oppressed group. The current administration is only making this worse. Two years ago, it was reported that the average lifespan for a trans woman of color is an appallingly short 35 years. Little has changed in the last two years except for increasingly hostile backlash against trans people for daring to want to use public restrooms safely. And with seven dead already in the U.S. in only two and a half months, 2017 is on track to be the deadliest year for trans women of color in recent memory.

Here is the official statement from Get Equal.

Do not forget these women at a time when they need the most help. The tiny bit of progress they made in this country has been yanked out from under them, leaving many in despair. Increasing visibility means increased backlash from transphobes. Be as vocal as possible in your support for trans women, especially trans women of color and those with other intersecting marginalized identities.

Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
