Gif of the Day

Morning Announcements

Everything's fine, I just didn't feel like blogging at work yesterday. And it's been difficult to blog at home because I got Mass Effect: Andromeda and it's actually great. It's much more open-world and less linear than the other Mass Effects, which I very much prefer, but which will make any game glitchy and requires sacrifices in terms of graphics, which has made some people very upset. Or they're still mad because you can still decide to be either a man or a woman in a BioWare game.

The point is, here is my character:

She is the cutest. Isn't she the cutest? I tried to make her look tough and instead she looks like a cool 15-year-old who's been put in charge of saving a hundred thousand people from dying in a strange galaxy.

And despite the fact that the graphics aren't holy shit perfect, BioWare has done a great job with subtle body language and hilarious facial expressions that really give a new level of depth to the characters. Fuck the haters. This game is great. Next time more options for relationships between two men. Thanks.

More on Actual Fake News

A good article on the Seattle Times came out today about a researcher at the University of Washington who stumbled upon the horrors of online conspiracy theory mass circle-jerks being boosted by Twitter bots.

UW professor: The information war is real, and we’re losing it

Professor Kate Starbird, who has the perfect YA novel protagonist name and needs to save us all from these dark times, is going to present a paper on this phenomenon in May. I'm glad to see academics are starting to take this seriously after I freaked the fuck out over it like a month ago.

This article primarily deals with the trend of false flag operation conspiracy theories that pop up literally every time there is a mass shooting or terrorist attack. If you didn't already know this, I'm sorry to but this piece of information in your brain - there are people who have harassed and threatened the parents of the children who were murdered during the Sandy Hook shooting because they believe it was a false flag operation and that these parents are just actors.

Even if I thought this was a possibility I would take the safe route and just go ahead and not send death threats to people who might be parents who have had to bury their children.

False flag operations have been staged by the CIA and other U.S. agencies, but staging a mass shooting of a elementary school would never work and would not be beneficial to their agendas in any way. And what, you really think they're going to spend their resources to stage mass shootings every goddamn day in this country, which is how often they happen now, to the point that we don't even notice them anymore? Why am I bothering to try and argue with these people? Back to the article.

This is my favorite part:

Starbird says she’s concluded, provocatively, that we may be headed toward “the menace of unreality — which is that nobody believes anything anymore.” Alex Jones, she says, is “a kind of prophet. There really is an information war for your mind. And we’re losing it.”

May be headed toward? I'm already there. Come join the party of utter uncertainty, everybody! There's plenty of anxiety for all!

What I wonder at this point is to what extent this was planned and what will be the result. The stress of uncertainty caused by constant lies and gaslighting will create demand for certainty, and already has. Sites like Politifact and Scopes have become something of a necessity. If they don't already have apps then they're lying down on the job. But it could also just cause people to cling more tightly to sources that assure them they're the only ones telling the truth.

What gets under my skin is that before the articles about mass webs of conspiracy theories and online mass misinformation spreading started coming out, Lord Dampnut was already up there accusing sources previously thought of as reliable staples of being "fake news." Then again, this was set up for many years by Fox News accusing the same sources of "liberal bias." It's just getting more and more extreme. But also, when someone accuses you of doing something bad that they're actually doing themselves, this is not only projection, but a common abuse tactic. It's amazing how much of the Dampnut strategy and alt-right word-vomit comes straight out of the abuser playbook. Then again, who's more abusive than fascists?

What a time to be alive.

Maxine Waters is the Hero We Need

I've been hearing more and more about Maxine Waters lately and honestly I don't know why I haven't heard all about her until now. Actually, I can make an educated guess - misogynoir. But she's now my hero and I love her.

She's been getting attention lately on Twitter for being absolutely fearless and generally fucking killing it, oh my god.

HOLY SHIT MAXINE I AM SO READY. You know what else I'm ready for? A black woman in the Oval Office.

Maxine Waters 2020. Fuck yes. I will follow her anywhere.

What are they trying to summon??

ICE Still Out There Terrorizing Communities

While we were battling against the rolling back of any progress on health care in this fucked up country, ICE has still been raiding, fucking with, and terrorizing communities in the name of ripping families apart to deport people to dangerous countries where they have nothing. Honestly, how can you be an ICE agent without utterly hating yourself to your very core?

Another person who should have been protected by the DREAM act was arrested by ICE in Portland, Oregon. He was taken from his home after they banged on his door without a warrant, terrifying his family, and thankfully has been released on bond. However, he's still vulnerable to deportation.

The young man, Francisco J. Rodriguez Dominguez, was brought to the U.S. when he was five years old and is a volunteer pantry manager at a food bank. He also coaches soccer for the kids in his community. But to ICE, because this guy was once caught driving under the influence of "intoxicants" (probably weed), he's a "threat to the community."

Meanwhile, in Chicago, a man who was not even being targeted by ICE was shot by an ICE agent and is currently in the hospital. They were at the residence of Felix Torres because they were reportedly after one of his sons, who is a U.S. citizen. What the fuck where they even doing there? No idea. They won't say. But this incident is just one of a growing number of reports of ICE agent terrorizing citizens and immigrant communities.

An interview with a Yale law professor by Democracy Now tells the story of how ICE has been used to retaliate against communities that try to stand up against deportations.

So, in the city of New Haven in 2006, community organizations, working with students at the law school, developed a set of proposals for policies to make New Haven more welcoming and to improve police-civilian relationships, especially in high immigrant neighborhoods. One of the recommendations from the community was that the city adopt a general-purpose municipal identification card, available to any resident who wanted one. In the spring of 2007, the mayor proposed, and the City Council, which we call the Board of Alders, overwhelmingly approved, the nation’s first general-purpose municipal ID program.
Forty-eight hours after the vote in City Council, in June of 2007, ICE conducted the largest raid, we believe, in the history of our state. They came in, in the predawn hours. They amassed a force of all federal agents they could find from different agencies all over the state. They swept into Fair Haven, which is a heavily Latino neighborhood in the eastern part of the city, going door to door, apartment to apartment, kicking down doors, pushing their way in, without warrants, without consent. They arrested 32 people in all—parents getting up in the morning, preparing to go to work, to take their children to school. Later, ICE claimed that they were looking for particular dangerous fugitive criminal aliens. But it turned out, of course, that of the 32 people they arrested, almost all of them had never before encountered immigration. They were just bystanders who happened to be living in an apartment where ICE thought someone used to be, or the apartment upstairs or the house next door.

And you can bet that kind of thing is happening now, and will probably increase as decent communities push back against draconian, fascist anti-immigrant and mass deportation policies. Seattle, being a sanctuary city, can expect to see these kinds of intimidation raids in the near future within immigrant communities, if it hasn't already.

I'm still strongly in favor of burning down every immigrant detention center after liberating the civilians inside. Fuck this fascist bullshit, fuck these concentration camps, and fuck ICE.

Muslim Women's Day!

Was yesterday! Blarg I can't believe I missed it! I was too distracted by the Trumpcare failure. Though it is comforting to know that the more Lord Dampnut fails, the better off my Muslim sisters are. At least in this country. We need to do more to stop the U.S. military from constantly murdering Muslim peoples in the Middle East. But anyway, it was the first official Muslim Women's Day and that is awesome. Muslim women are awesome. I wish there had been more in the news about it before today.

If you missed it, too, there's a great piece on Refinery about how Muslim women are adversely affected by the current administration and things you can do to support them. This article also introduced me to Muslim Girl dot com! It's a wonderful blog by Muslim women and for Muslim women, so if you're Muslim or want to learn more about their daily struggles, history, perspective, etc., check it out!

Also, yesterday, Muslim women in London risked Islamophobic violence to stand hand-in-hand on the Westminster Bridge in solidarity with terrorism victims. It continues to suck that Muslim people feel like they have to make a big public show of support for victims of terrorism just because a group of massive assholes claim to be of the same religion even though they don't follow the tenets of Islam like, at all. And also most victims of ISIS terrorism are Muslim. But these women went out there, spent the day that was supposed to be for them showing solidarity to others, and they are awesome.

Thank you, Muslim women, for being so amazing.

What's Next for US Healthcare

Well that was fun, but there is absolutely zero chance that Republicans are going to stop trying to destroy the Affordable Care Act just because they failed to do so through legal means. They already have a new plan, which is as petty as it is callous.

So, their plan is to let everything go to hell in the world of healthcare, putting many millions of people at risk of death and almost certainly causing more than a few actual deaths out of spite/so they can pick up the pieces and do whatever they want with them in the ensuing chaos.

Real evil cartoon villain move there.

Republicans have of course been claiming that Obamacare is collapsing or spiraling or whatever other doomsday image they can conjure up, but is it really? Some guy named Larry says that the general consensus is "no." It sounds like despite problems, the spiking premiums will stabilize and things will be relatively okay under the current law, even if it's still flawed. Now is a good time to remember that this is a Republican law, basically a clone of what Mitt Romney came up with back when he was pretending to be a moderate Republican.

Anyway, many people are now speculating that the Dampnut administration will actively attempt to undermine the healthcare marketplace so that it does collapse and they can be all like "look we were right" and act out that cartoon villain scenario we talked about. That certainly doesn't sound like somewhere too low for them to stoop, and small, tricky bills undermining the ACA will be harder to detect and fight. So expect that in the near future.

However, there may be a bit of a silver lining in this shit parade. Senator Bernie Sanders is planning to introduce a bill that is the exact opposite of what Republicans are trying to do. Real, effective single-payer healthcare that covers everyone so that you never have to worry about whether you'll be able to afford to pay for chemo if you get cancer again. All for an increase in taxes that, knowing Bernie, will mostly affect people who can very easily afford it.

No, this won't get passed, shut up for a second. This bill could send a message. If the Democrats throw their support behind this bill and everyone on the left demands it, imagine the side-by-side comparisons of single-payer system approval and Trumpcare approval in the polls. It's guaranteed to piss Lord Dampnut off, which has been shown to throw him off his game. And it could bolster the movement for universal healthcare in this country.

Bernie's gonna do this. It's up to the rest of us to make it worth his effort. Demand universal healthcare.

A Tapestry of Trumpcare's Humiliating Failure

From the Daily Beast:

Meanwhile, House Freedom Caucus members seemed to dig in further. Upon hearing that White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon and President Trump were compiling a “shit list” of those who opposed the bill, an aide working for the hardline conservative caucus responded, “Meh.”
When asked by The Daily Beast if he was at all concerned about potentially making the White House “hit list” for his staunch opposition from the beginning to the American Health Care Act, Freedom Caucus member Rep. Justin Amash just smiled, laughed, and replied, “What do you think?”

Paul Ryan announcing Trumpcare's withdrawal:

Huffington Post:

“Guys, look,” Bannon reportedly said. “This is not a discussion. This is not a debate. You have no choice but to vote for this bill.”
Bannon apparently did not count on the fact that House Republicans knew they actually did have a choice in the matter.
“You know, the last time someone ordered me to something, I was 18 years old,” one of the members reportedly told Bannon. “And it was my daddy. And I didn’t listen to him, either.”

Trumpcare might be gone but the internet is memeing it to death just in case

Looks like governing an entire country is harder than tweeting to all your fans and bullying people with a fake news site! Uh oh!

Nazi Rhetoric Leads to Dead People

I'm sure you've already heard about this but let me lay it out for you:

  1. White man goes on YouTube and watches videos by neo-Nazis and white supremacists who are also Trump supporters.
  2. White man becomes a white supremacist.
  3. White man goes to New York specifically to find a black man in a relationship with a white woman and kill him.
  4. White man stabs and kills a black man as planned.
  5. White man turns himself in and admits to doing is as an intentional racist hate crime. Also admits to being part of a white supremacist group - the National Policy Institute, founded by Richard Spencer.
  6. A "manifesto" written by this white man is found saying that he was going to do this to "send a message."
  7. People continue to say that it's wrong to physically attack Nazis.

This is pretty much the same sequence of events that transpired with Dylan Roof, only Roof had a gun. How many lives could have been saved if we hadn't passively allowed dangerous white supremacists platforms to spread their deadly rhetoric? Do not tolerate them. No unchallenged speech for Nazis.

Rape and Incest Are the Will of God but Abortion Isn't

So says Oklahoma Rep. George Faught who has introduced a bill that claims to protect kids with "genetic abnormalities" like Down Syndrome from selective abortion but makes no exception for pregnancy due to rape or incest. When challenged by Rep. Cory Williams with the question "is rape the will of God," Faught replied with this bullshit:

“If you read the Bible, there’s actually a couple circumstances where that happened and the Lord uses all circumstances,” Faught replied. “I mean, you can go down that path, but it’s a reality, unfortunately.”

And when pressed further:

“It’s a great question to ask, and, obviously if it happens in someone’s life, it may not be the best thing that ever happened. But, so you’re saying that God is not sovereign with every activity that happens in someone’s life and can’t use anything and everything in someone’s life, and I disagree with that.”

I was raised Christian so I know a thing or two about God's will. Actually, there's only one thing you need to know about God's will, and that is that nobody is supposed to know what it is or even speculate on it.

And, not to brag, but I also know a thing or two about basic human logic. And basic human logic says that if horrible things like rape and incest can be God's will, then abortion could also be God's will. This seems especially true since the Bible never says anything directly about abortion, especially in the New Testament. However, rape and incest are condemned multiple times.

Also, the fact that Republicans are getting more and more bold in their refusal to give exceptions for rape and incest in their anti-abortion bills just shows that they have never given a fuck about victim of either and only ever included these exceptions because the political climate would have made it political suicide. And that's very, very depressing.

Headline of the Month

For Tim Allen, being a non-liberal in Hollywood is like being in 1930s Germany

“You gotta be real careful around here,” actor Tim Allen said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” after stuttering through a confession that he attended President Trump’s inauguration. “You get beat up if you don’t believe what everybody else believes. This is like ’30s Germany.”

I do not believe that anybody has been "beat up" for being conservative in Hollywood but I'm going to imagine Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie beating the shit out of Tim Allen every night before I fall asleep.

Man Casually Tells Police He Raped a Woman During Job Interview

I don't know if it's possible to frame just how ridiculous this in within the confines of a headline of reasonable length. Here's what happened. A guy who wants to become a police officer goes in for a pre-interview thing with current police officers and somehow ended up confessing to raping a woman. The article on this shit doesn't explain how the fuck that happened. I guess it's possible that cops somewhere are actually asking applicants if they've ever committed a sexual assault, or maybe they just asked if he'd ever committed a crime, but why then would he admit to rape?

The only thing I can think of is that police are so fucking awful when it comes to sexual assault that this applicant-rapist was like "no I've never committed a crime, unless you count the time I banged this blackout drunk woman, haha, score, amirite?" I would bet money that that's how it went down. Then he admitted to video taping the assault, and they found the woman and she told them she hadn't consented nor was even aware that this had happened to her.

I'm glad that they at least arrested and charged him, although only with second-degree sexual assault (do men ever get charged with actual rape or is that not a thing?), but everything about this story is indicative of how pervasive rape culture is, and is therefore a giant bummer.

Ray Price will now probably spend a few months in jail and then will be free to become a cop and keep raping women. Again, I bet you money that's what happens. MONEY.

I hate everything.

[UPDATED] There is an Actual Down With Trans Bus

A little background. There's a bit of a running joke around certain Tumblr circles, by which I mean trans and non-binary people. It originated when some transphobe posted a not at all believable story about innocently walking down the street when a bus rolled up and a bunch of trans people got off wearing shirts that said "DOWN WITH CIS" and started beating up the person's friend.

Trans people, who are clearly used to this kind of bizarre, bigoted bullshit, turned it into a massive joke, Photoshopping "down with cis" onto everything and generally making a running gag about the down with cis bus. Nearly two years later, this pops up:

The "free speech bus" makes no sense because this has nothing to do with free speech. This is the down with trans bus.

It would be funny if it weren't so nauseatingly, enragingly awful. that and the "Respect all" bit. "YOUR GENDER IS WHAT I SAY IT IS. Respect all."

On Wednesday, they parked outside the United Nations headquarters, where ambassadors are considering a sex education resolution that a spokesperson for the bus argued promotes “an ideology that gender is fluid.”
“We are trying to strike back against that,” said Joseph Grabowski, a spokesperson for the National Organization for Marriage, one of the three conservative groups behind the project. They hope parading the bus through major cities will unleash a silent majority that they believe is frustrated by shifting norms about gender and families.

Sounds like Nazis. Except since when are transphobes the minority or silent? Since never, that's when. Not in this country or the UK, at least.

This giant turd on wheels is going on tour in the Northeastern states, stopping in New Haven, Boston, Philadelphia, and DC. I live on the West coast, unfortunately, but if I had the ability I'd be hopping on a plan just to hunt this thing down with several cartons of eggs and a bag of sugar.

Seriously, if you're cis, and you see this bus around town, consider vandalism! Because this bus might as well say "go ahead and violently attack every trans person you see on the street! Your bigotry and hatred are valid and will be supported!"

Fuck you, transphobes. Fuck you, fuck your complete non-understanding of biology, fuck your bigotry, fuck your inability to mind your own goddamn business, and fuck the bus you rode in on.

It's been suggested that the image above is a Photoshop job. This is real:

I'm at DMX Levels of Done

There's only one song I identify with right now:

This is not an endorsement of the actual message of this song or anything DMX says/does or has said/done, okay thanks.

I just literally feel sometimes as though I'm losing my grip on reality because people cannot be this cruel, they cannot be this hypocritical, they cannot claim to be Christians and spit in the faces of refugees while worshiping rich idols. But they are, and they do.

People who claim to be conservative being fine with a man who wants to jack up the military budget by nearly double what he's even going to cut while spending more than a year's funding for Meals on Wheels, which he wants to cut, on trips to his Florida resort every fucking weekend because instead of doing his fucking job he decided that he's the only president ever who gets to take weekends off.

People who claim to be Christians or claim to be logical judging millions of people to be deserving of suffering, homelessness, starvation and death without even meeting them, just assuming that if they're already poor then they deserve to be poor, in fact they deserve to be even deeper in poverty. They deserve to lose everything and die in the gutter. That is what conservatives, libertarians and Republicans are condemning millions of people in the U.S. alone to, and countless others outside of our borders. They dare to judge them without knowing a thing about each individual's situation.

"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-2
"When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt." Leviticus 19:33-34
"Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God." Matthew 19:24

If you support Trump, you are not Christian. You are not fiscally conservative. You are just a horrible asshole. And if you're not rich, you're going to get fucked like the rest of us. Only it will be your own fault.

Flawless Human Victory

This is too important of a victory to be snarky or rubbing people's face in it.

Rape victims will no longer face cross-examination in court with testimony to be filmed instead

Unfortunately, this only affects the U.K. But it's still a fantastic step in a world that is very much plagued by rape culture in nearly every corner of the globe.

Justice Secretary Elizabeth Truss said that, from September, their cross-examination will be pre-recorded and then played to the jury during the trial.
The roll-out of the scheme was originally not scheduled to start until the beginning of next year but has been brought forward following an agreement with senior judges.
"Attitudes to sex crimes and victims have changed beyond all recognition in our lifetime, and rape prosecutions are now at record levels," Ms Truss said.
"With more victims now finding the confidence to come forward, I am determined to make their path to justice swifter and less traumatic.

Many survivors that have come forward have spoken out about the trauma of being aggressively cross-examined during trial proceedings, made to recount one of the worst moments of their lives over and over to an often hostile room full of strangers. This is why victims so often drop charges or suddenly refuse to help prosecution. They can't take that kind of psychological torture anymore.

More needs to be done, however, to protect survivors. Dealing with police is still often very traumatizing for them and harassment from the defendant's friends and family and often the entire community is still a massive problem. But this is a great step. And a bit of good news in a never-ending downpour of shit lately.

Republicans Want Poor People to Die

The horrific shit coming out of this budget is fucking mind blowing, honestly. As cruel as I know Republicans are, I never thought they would just throw out any semblance of a charade of caring about human beings, including a huge chunk of the people who vote for them - poor, rural, and elderly white people.

Especially the elderly. You can't just fuck over old people. Not while there's still any hint of a fair election system. I know Republicans have gone hardcore with gerrymandering but old people will fuck you up if you mess with them. Taking away their social security, medicare, and fucking Meals on Wheels? Are you trying to commit political suicide? Or do you just want poor people dead that fucking much that you can't even wait for democracy to die first?

Maybe I'm wrong. And let's be honest, I've been wrong plenty about this country in the past several months. But I still feel like Republicans are blowing their load here.

I mean, Paul Ryan himself said "We’ve been dreaming of this since I’ve been around, since you and I were drinking out of kegs" when talking about cutting Medicaid. They have been quivering in anticipation over the course of this election and are gleeful at the chance to take away basic health care from the hands of the poor and sick. They're delighted to take food from the hungry, including hungry children. They're ecstatic to leave disabled people with nothing. They're leaping with joy at the chance to cut off heat for poor families. They want poor people cold, hungry, and sick, because they want them dead. Children, elderly, disabled, single mothers, people who can't work, anyone. It doesn't matter to them. They want poor people dead.

And guess what? We're already dying.

Knoxville woman with epilepsy dies after government benefits stop

On disability for several years, Amy Schnelle was receiving powerful anti-seizure drugs and had been seizure free since 2015. Then the United States Social Security Administration threw her a curve ball in September 2016 when they informed her she was no longer sick.
She appealed the decision, but while her appeal was under consideration, Amy Schnelle’s benefits stopped. Nevertheless, three of the drug manufacturers provided her with sample drugs, but one did not. Sylvia Schnelle, Amy Schnelle’s mother, said without the full supply of prescription pills, her daughter relapsed in late October.
“She had a whole lot of seizures because one of the medicines didn’t come through,” said Sylvia Schnelle. “Once you stop your medicine so abruptly you go into a tailspin of seizures and you don’t come out of it.”
Writing to Congressman Jimmy Duncan, Amy Schnelle was able to convince the government to resume her benefits. That happened in January 2017, but in February 2017, from her apartment, she texted her mother she had a “bad” seizure and asked her to “please” come. Her mother rushed to Knoxville from her home in Dandridge.
“Amy was on her stomach and she had already died. She died from a seizure,” said Sylvia Schnelle through tears.

Amy Schnelle is dead because of government cuts to disability benefits, because they took away the health care she needed to survive. Republicans killed her. They murdered her.

At what point do we ask ourselves, how long do we let these rich piece of shit murderers kill us before we fight back in self defense? How long until we say "you no longer get to use our money to kill others while we die of hunger and sickness. You no longer get to steal everything from us and leave us to die in poverty. You no longer get to decide what's best for us and murder us by denying us our basic needs."

People moan about broken windows and burning limos. Self defense is not violence. Taking food from the hungry and medicine from the sick is violence. They're killing us. Stop letting them.

A Compilation of Angela Merkel's Face

For some reason, perhaps as part of a punishment for past sins, Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, had to come over here and meet with Lord Dampnut last Friday, spending hours at a time listening to him talk. This included him snubbing her when she asked for a handshake and demanding that Germany pay us an imaginary NATO debt.

She got through the encounter without going off on the orange Disney Channel villain entirely, but she couldn't hide 100% of her horror, which emerged at choice moments on her face, resulting in facial expressions that I deeply identify with. Click the images to see them in full glory.

Here's where it first sunk in that this guy is actually president of the United States of America:

Still going:

This is the "did he really just fucking say that" face:

Here's your classic "looks into the camera like it's the office" face:

I think at this point she's trying to put a curse on him with her mind:

I call this one "barely keeping it together":

And finally, "this is a joke, right, tell me this is all a massive prank, please god":

I think overall Merkel did pretty well, especially considering that in finding these photos it became apparent that this woman has an epic disapproval face, like, one that would put your British nanny to shame. Not to mention a great eye-roll/praying to god for patience face:

Same, Angela. Same.

Protect Abused and Disabled Guatemalan Girls

A horrific tragedy has revealed equally horrific abuse in a facility in Guatemala where abused, abandoned, and disabled girls were kept. 43 girls are dead after the facility went up in flames two weeks ago. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but it sounds like it could very well have been a desperate act of rebellion by one of the girls who was desperately trying to escape from a prison of abuse and neglect.

The 750 residents crammed into the aging structures were nearly all victims of abandonment and abuse and had been removed from families and guardians by the authorities for their own safety.
But they found little respite at the state home, and in some cases more of what they fled. Members of the staff sexually abused residents, prompting criminal cases and a series of complaints with the country’s human rights commission, which had requested a judicial order to close the facility down a month ago.

According to Feminist Culture, girls who tried to flee the facility to escape sexual and physical abuse were locked in a tiny room the day before the fire, and because they were still in there, they had no way to get out. Most of those girls died.

This tragedy exposes deep misogyny and ableism in the country. Girls would be sent there for mental illness and disabilities that families just didn't want to deal with, or because they wouldn't "follow orders," as one parent put it. LGBT+ girls were also sent there by homophobic families. Complaints about the facility's abuses have been public since 2013, but very little appears to have been done about it.

Now, according to Disability Rights International, these girls are still in danger of abuse and mistreatment due to the fact that the over 700 girls who survived need to be moved somewhere, and the facilities that exist in the country aren't prepared to handle them. At the same time, Guatemala's policy of institutionalizing "problem" children fuels abuse no matter where they go.

An organization called Orphan Outreach is collecting donations to help these girls, though it's important to remember that many are not orphans but have simply been abandoned by their parents or taken away from them due to abuse. You can also donate to Disability Rights International.

You can also help by spreading the word. I don't often call out nations that are dominated by people of color, being a white person, but we need to put international pressure on Guatemala to change their policies on how disabled, mentally ill, and abandoned children, particularly girls, are treated and protected.

Trump's Trying to Take Us Back to the 1900's

And I don't mean the 1950's or the 1940's. No, much further back, to very early in the 20th century. Maybe even into the late 1800's. Before labor laws were passed that protected us from abuse and total control by our employers. Before child labor laws. Before any adequate financial market regulation. Before any kind of anti-pollution law. Before the EPA ever existed. Before we had adequate schools for everyone. And of course, far before Civil Rights, reproductive rights, and any protection against discrimination.

Mehreen Kasana, writer at Bustle, created a list of eight key bills that have been introduced by the Dampnut administration that are seeking to ultimately subjugate and/or kill anyone who isn't a rich white able bodied neurotypical cishet man. Let's go piece by piece.

The termination of the entire Department of Education. No more federal funding or regulations for schools. This is purportedly to "give the power back to the states," meaning that deep red states, many of which are poor, are fucked. This also means no federal funds for student loans or tuition grants, no Title IX protections, and the closure of many schools, including private ones. The American population becomes less educated.

Because fuck the environment, right? No more protections for endangered species. Many laws protecting our air, water, and land from pollution would be essentially rendered useless. This is so ridiculous that the Atlantic thinks this is a stunt bill and will never be passed. But it still signals their intentions to take away our environmental protections and bring us back to an age where the rivers anywhere near cities were grey and on fire and people were routinely dying from air pollution.

Bye bye polar bears. Wolves. Other animals that depend on the presence of these apex predators. This is going to enrage some white people.

This doesn't directly criminalize abortion, but criminalizes abortion based on race or sex. I don't think race-selective abortions are even a thing, and certainly not in the U.S. It's a racist bill that specifically targets Asian Americans based on stereotypes about them not wanting girl babies, and also gives anyone an excuse to challenge any abortion. It's so easy to claim that someone seeking an abortion is doing so because they don't want a baby of a certain race or gender, and they could tie a pregnant person up in legislation until it's too late to have an abortion. It also authorized "fathers" to challenge the pregnant person's right to an abortion.

A blanket threat of a bill that would also affect my city of Seattle.

Called the "National Right-to-Work Act." States' rights my ass.

This appears to be a backup bill for if they can't terminate the Department of Education altogether. It limits the department's authority so that it can only give "block grants" to states. This is the voucher program you've been hearing about that makes education better for rich kids and shittier for everyone else.

According to Al Jazeera, these are just eight of over 2,000 bills that have been introduces since Lord Dampnut seized power. That's a lot of fucking bills. As was warned, this is likely an attempt to overwhelm us and deplete our energy so they can get a couple devastating bills through without much resistance. Some of them are clearly decoys that will never get passed, but some of them are viable and terrifying. Al Jazeera's video is pretty helpful, though for the record, I hate the whole "while you were paying attention to this, this other thing happened." First of all, we can pay attention to more than one thing in a day. Second, fuck you, it's all bad, stop trying to make people feel like suckers while you're a bastion of logic above emotional reactions to Trump's horrific behavior. Literally shut up.

Anyway. Shittier education, dirty air and water, busted unions, shittier healthcare. Then there's the budget plan that's going to defund programs like fucking Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels! Why doesn't Dampnut just kick a puppy on live TV?

If you aren't aware of the way people lived in the late 1800's and early 1900's, you should really read up on it. It was fucking disgusting and the average person live in abject poverty, working 18 hour days in dangerous and deplorable conditions just to survive. People fought hard to make things reasonably okay for workers and for the poor, and now Republicans are fighting hard to gut all those laws and regulations the common people have benefited from for all these decades. Don't let them take it. Don't let them turn this country back into a fucking hellscape on the off chance that you might somehow make it rich and be able to step on the rest of us with them.

Woman Used in Gross Transphobic Ad: "Fuck You, Transphobes"

Kelly Herron became a national treasure overnight after the transphobes behind Washington State's I-1552 used her story of being sexually assaulted in a bathroom without her permission. She survived a violent and traumatic attempted rape by a sex offender in a public restroom, and the transphobic "Just Want Privacy" campaign used her story and photos of her injuries without asking her in an email blast asking for donations to fund their shit initiative. Their shitiative. I'll work on that.

When Herron found out about this, she went to the press and released a statement saying in no uncertain terms that she was not happy with them.

“To the people behind I-1552, I say ‘not today, mutherf**kers,’” Herron said in a press release. “I refuse to allow anyone to use me and my horrific sexual assault to cause harm and discrimination to others.”

This is especially beautiful because "not today, motherfucker" is what she yelled at the attempted rapist as she fought him off.

Beyond the general fucked up-ness of using the story of someone's trauma without their permission to fuel your politics, it's fucked up because it makes no sense. The sex offender, Gary Steiner, is a cis man who has pulled shit like this in Arizona, where you can bet there's no protections for trans people. Removing laws allowing trans people to use the bathrooms they want to use would not have stopped this man from attempting to rape Herron. And said laws did not stop police from arresting and charging Steiner with attempted rape.

All these laws do is force trans people out of the public sphere, preventing them from being able to have anything close to a normal life. Meanwhile, sexual predators can still enter any bathroom they want at any time because bathroom guards are not a thing. Just like trans people assaulting people in bathrooms is not a thing.

Honestly, if transphobes "just want privacy," then they should use their bathrooms at home or single-stall bathrooms only. Why should millions of trans people suffer because of an irrational fear of something that never happens?

Anyway, Herron is great, and this is how you ally. I've received emails from the Washington Won't Discriminate campaign, a counter campaign to "Just Want Privacy," which is now working with Herron to solicit donations to the movement to protect trans people. She took a horrible experience and turned it into something positive for other people, who, by the way, suffer sexual assault at a much higher rate than cis people. Way to go, Kelly Herron! And go fuck yourselves, Just Want Privacy.

Why I Don't Trust Men: Part 2935983260519827

"Why do you hate men?" people ask me.

"Have you ever met men?" I respond.

You may have heard of the statue of the little girl bravely standing before the Wall Street Bull that was put in place on this year's International Women's Day. It's meant to highlight the lack of women in the financial district or show that girls are fearless or some shit, I dunno. I didn't write about it because I honestly think it's a weak show of support from a massive "asset management" company that pulls in billions of dollars in revenue every year.

State Street Global Advisors could have done a whole lot more than commissioned one small statue that will be removed after a month. To me it seems like a meaningless gesture likely calculated by the marketing department as a PR opportunity. They're still a huge part of the U.S. capitalist beast that has murdered countless women across the globe. I think it's telling that the girl has nothing at all to defend herself with and would in actuality be gored and trampled to death by an angry capitalism bull.

But as lukewarm as I am on this "Defiant Girl" statue, I am still incredibly pissed off at this guy:

Photo of Wall Street bro humping ‘Fearless Girl’ feminist statue goes viral

So they place an image of a little girl meant to represent "girl power" or whatever in a half-assed statement of support for women's participation in capitalism in front of your representation of the toxic masculinity-fueled imaginary money market and that threatens your masculinity so hard that you pretend to sexually assault a little child? Did I get that right?

“Almost as if out of central casting, some Wall Street finance broseph appeared and started humping the statue while his gross date rape-y friends laughed and cheered him on,” Alexis Kaloyanides captioned the picture. “He pretended to have sex with the image of a little girl. Douchebags like this are why we need feminism.”

Yeah no shit. I wasn't wild about this statue but if it exposed this asshole as the fragile sexual abuse-promoting piece of shit that he is then it was worth it.

Here's the guy's face:

I don't know if he's been identified but I hope his name gets dragged through the mud so bad that he has to change his name and move to Antarctica.

This is why I don't trust men. Any time there's any show of support for women, for gender equality, even the most capitalist moderate-liberal milquetoast PR-boosting bullshit statement of "hey women are also good and can do things," some dude has to come rub his crotch on it. This is the most base show of toxic masculinity, and it's particularly repulsive that it's on a statue of a child in a society where child sexual abuse is so pervasive.

Child sexual abuse is about power. Adults should not be sexually attracted to children. Those who are get off on the massive amount of power they have over children, who naturally trust adults. Rape in general is also about power. Sexual assault, sexual degradation, from catcalling all the way up to rape, is and has always been about power. It's about showing that you have complete power over another human being and exercising that power in the worst way possible.

That's what this guy is doing. The statue threatened his sense of power over women and girls so he thought: "Girl power? Oh no, I'll show that I have all the power by humping the representation of female power and completely getting away with it." And if his sense of power is so fragile as to be threatened by a statue of a little girl standing up to a representation of his own male ego, I would not be at all surprised if he has been violent toward actual living women and girls.

That is why it's so important to refuse to tolerate shit like this. Men like this Wall Street douchebro need to learn that there are consequences for their actions. When they don't, they turn into Donald Trumps.

64,000 Black Women Reported Missing in 2012, Nothing is Done

That's a lot of fucking missing women. It also represents a clear racial disparity. 40 percent of all missing people are black when they make up only 12.2 percent of the total population in the U.S.

I'm starting to see alerts pop up regularly on Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter about black women and girls who have disappeared. This keeps happening despite campaigns to call attention to the problem. There's a fear that sex trafficking rings are targeting young black women and girls due to the fact that the general public doesn't seem to much care about them and therefore won't make any effort to find them. Or they're blamed for it because it's assumed that if a black person goes missing it must be because they were involved in some kind of criminal behavior, no matter how young they are. Not that criminal activity should stop people from caring if a person has been abducted.

This is a national emergency. Sex trafficking is a $32 billion dollar industry in the U.S. - and when I say sex trafficking, I mean people being forced into sex work against their will. There's nothing wrong with sex work. There is something wrong with slavery. Yet despite this huge underground slavery industry, very little is said by the federal government and not nearly enough funds are allocated to combating the problem. Of course, since Lord Dampnut's own modeling agency may very well be part of that industry, I highly doubt that's going to get better any time soon, especially since many of these women and girls are black, Latina, and/or Native.

You can see for yourself and keep track of news about missing people on Twitter by search the hashtag #BringThemHome. You'll see that a strong majority of the missing are young black teens. It's heartbreaking. But we need to look at it. We need to do something about this. Don't let these children suffer just because their skin is dark.

National Day of Action for Trans Women of Color

Hey why the FUCK didn't I see this until today? Clearly I'm not doing enough to follow trans women of color.

Anyway, today is indeed the National Day of Action for Trans Women of Color. It doesn't look like there was anything planned for the Seattle area anyway, which is bullshit considering the sizable LGBT+ community here. But we can still take action.

Say her name:

Mesha Caldwell
Jaquarrius Holland
Chyna Doll Depree
JoJo Striker
Ciara McElveen
Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow
Tiara Richmond

All of these trans women of color have been murdered in the year 2017. Violent racism and transmisogyny continue to imperil the lives of of this incredibly oppressed group. The current administration is only making this worse. Two years ago, it was reported that the average lifespan for a trans woman of color is an appallingly short 35 years. Little has changed in the last two years except for increasingly hostile backlash against trans people for daring to want to use public restrooms safely. And with seven dead already in the U.S. in only two and a half months, 2017 is on track to be the deadliest year for trans women of color in recent memory.

Here is the official statement from Get Equal.

Do not forget these women at a time when they need the most help. The tiny bit of progress they made in this country has been yanked out from under them, leaving many in despair. Increasing visibility means increased backlash from transphobes. Be as vocal as possible in your support for trans women, especially trans women of color and those with other intersecting marginalized identities.

Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.
Trans women are women.

Steve King Lets Us Know What Conservatives Are Really Afraid Of

And when I say "conservatives," I mean all of you. Yes, even the "socially liberal" ones.

You may have heard of Steve King's proudly racist fearmongering nationalism sent out via Twitter over the weekend. The Republican representative for Iowa said in a tweet: "We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies." And by this, he meant exactly what he said, according to Steve King.

"You cannot rebuild your civilization with somebody else's babies. You've got to keep your birth rate up, and that you need to teach your children your values," King said, paraphrasing remarks he said he's delivered to audiences in Europe. "In doing so, you can grow your population, you can strengthen your culture, and you can strengthen your way of life."

In other words, white people need to have more babies so that we whites can maintain control of the country rather than losing it to people of color, who will soon outnumber us. He's saying that people of color (many of whom were here first or were brought over against their will or were forced to flee here because we destroyed their country) don't actually belong here. They are "someone else." They are not a part of "our" culture and "our" way of life.

Literally go fuck yourself in a corn field, Steve King.

This is what racists/white supremacists like Steve King are afraid of. They know the say is coming when we white people are no longer the majority in the U.S. This country is becoming less white and more progressive every year, and thank god. If we make it through the Trump years, the U.S. is going to be a lot better off once it's in the hands of people who actually understand things like poverty and oppression and therefore maybe will have some actual compassion for those who suffer most in this shit country.

The only problem is that once that point comes, that fear is going to erupt into violence - and it's coming sooner than you might expect. According to NPR, by the year 2020, the majority of children will be children of color. Once that announcement is released, you can expect a spike in racist hate crimes. And then again around 2044, when we whites are officially no longer a majority here. We white people, if we want to do ally work, need to be preparing to protect people of color from this now. Make sure your children see diversity in media and in books. Schools need prepare to focus on welcoming greater diversity. Take that anti-racist training course now.

Now you have yet another reason. Protect Kids of Color 2020.

Republicans Want Poor People to Die

When I say "Republicans," I'm referring specifically to Republican politicians. I recognize that there are people in poverty who identify as Republican. And to them I say:

Republicans want you to die.

Trumpcare = dead poor people.

"Pro-life" policy = dead poor people (and more dead fetuses, wanted and unwanted).

Anti-refugee policy = dead poor people of color.

Anti-immigration policy = dead poor people of color.

"Trickle down" policy = dead poor people.

Cutting SNAP and free school lunches = dead poor children.

Private prisons = dead poor people.

"War on Drugs" = dead poor people.

"War on Terror" = dead poor Muslim people.

Cutting environmental regulations = dead poor people.

Climate denial = dead poor people.

Withdrawing federal protections for trans people = dead poor trans people.

Anti-welfare policy = dead poor people.

Everything comes back to poor people dying. And if you're also black, Muslim, trans, Latinx, Native, etc., they want you to die even more. Actually, they only state that they want you alive in is in slavery, via the prison industrial complex, where slavery is still legal.

Think I'm exaggerating? Republicans don't even try to hide it. They don't try to pretend that their policies are going to save lives or even that they won't cause people to die. All they do is talk about how poor people deserve to die. We're too lazy to make more money, so we deserve to die. We came from another country, so we deserve to die. We take or are addicted to drugs, so we deserve to die. Our parents are poor, so we deserve to die. We live in a certain area because we can't afford to live anywhere else, so we deserve to die. We were born in the Middle East, so we deserve to die.

They want us to die, and so they're trying to kill us. And then they call us violent for fighting back. Funny.

Gif of the Day

Why is this happening.

Recommended Reading

This particular piece of writing is so brilliant, so hilarious, and so necessary right now in this time of intense attack upon progress and societal equity. Another amazing work published on The Establishment:

Your Calls For Unity Are Divisive As F*ck

By DiDi Delgado of Black Lives Matter-Cambridge.

Last month I published an article about my incredulous feelings towards white women. To the surprise of absolutely no one, lots of folks hated it and labeled me a racist. Bigoted white men descended upon me to point fingers, while proclaiming vindication for the “election” of their new orange king. Indignant white women bombarded me through every avenue of social media to declare, “Not me!” — while simultaneously proving my point. And Black men used the opportunity to shit on Black women and console all the sad Beckies in the comments. I was called a whore, a bitch, and a cannibal — all of which are true. But the most prevalent comments came from white liberals, who were disgusted by the “divisiveness” of a Black woman. They seemed outraged by my failure to quietly embrace their neo-liberal politics and pseudo-progressivism for the sake of unity.

This piece is so important because it makes the incredibly true point that the people who are being divisive are not, in fact, the ones demanding to be included. It's the people who refuse to include the most marginalized of our society - trans women, black women, disabled women, etc. - who are being divisive.

History has proven that progressive movements that leave out or actively shit upon populations that experience intersecting oppressions consistently fail to create real, lasting positive change for anybody but a specific group of privileged people. Suffrage got white women the vote, but black and Native women didn't really have access to the vote until the 60's and 70's, respectively. That left white women without important allies for many decades. White gay men left out more marginalized populations like the poor, people of color, and trans people, and now these populations make up the bulk of the LGBT+ homeless problem we have now. Nice job.

As was recently noted by attorney and activist, Marbre Stahly-Butts, “Unity is not the objective; freedom is.” If progressives want to quell divisiveness within the ranks, they need to start examining themselves, not their detractors. Radicals are NOT slowing liberals down. It’s the other way around. Sometimes the enemy of my enemy is still my enemy. Liberals need to stop looking at themselves as inherently good, and begin reflecting on the ways they’re inherently oppressive.

I urge you to read the entire piece by Delgado, if only because it is so hilarious (a cannibal???) and well-written. But also because, as a black woman, she has more authority to speak on these matters than I do as a white woman.

Nazis Just Running Around Openly Assaulting People

We tried to warn you. Hateful rhetoric leads to violent actions, and giving Nazis a platform emboldens them to take the next logical step.

White supremacist stabs interracial couple after seeing them kiss at bar, police say.

If even the police are calling the guy a white supremacist, then he's a white supremacist.

“He tells them, ‘Yeah, I stabbed them. I’m a white supremacist,'” Lower said. “He begins talking about Donald Trump rallies and attacking people at the Black Lives Matter protest.”

This is yet another incident to happen in the state of Washington, where I live. Not long ago, this happened:

Sikh man in Kent says he was told, ‘Go back to your own country’ before he was shot.

I had meant to blog about this earlier but it shook me up, because I actually went to school in Kent and worked my first job there. It was right next to the city where I grew up. As time went on, the people of the city became increasingly poor and less white, and Kent was more and more often referred to as "ghetto." But there are also gated communities that I had to drive into as a pizza delivery driver back in 2007 full of rich white people that didn't tip well at all.

So in a way, I'm not surprised. But I am outraged and horrified. It makes me want to move back down to that area to clean up the racists.

This comes after the shooting of two Indian men in Kansas that caused the death of one, in which a white guy shouted "get out of my country" before opening fire. Another Indian man was shot in South Carolina and killed on his own lawn. This wasn't made a clear hate crime because nobody was caught screaming about "their" country during the murder, but I feel like there may be a fucking pattern going on here, people. Try to tell me this isn't about race when Indian and Sikh people are constantly targeted. They're not even being targeted by the current racist rhetoric but they always get caught up in it. Try to tell me this isn't about white supremacy.

Nazis are also continuing their anti-semitic terrorism campaign:

Anti-Semitic flyers posted at Texas State; university president refuses to issue statement

Seattle synagogue vandalized with Holocaust denial graffiti

Trump supporters call for “liberal genocide” and deportation of Jews at Arizona rally

And the stories just keep rolling in.

Innocent communities are under active assault in our country, and we have to defend them. That means making it clear to everyone you know that any form of racism or anti-semitism will not be tolerated. Not on your Facebook feed, not in your neighborhood, not in your country. Nazis are not welcome here.

Gif of the Day

I can't explain exactly why, but videos of robots being extremely bad at their jobs is for some reason the most hilarious thing in the world to me.

Are We in the Upside-Down or What

I'm having a bit of a hard time today, to be perfectly honest. Also, that is an understatement.

As you may have noticed, I'm having a tough time figuring out why people are so fantastically willing to be screwed by capitalism. And I know, I know, I really should understand. After all, it was just a few years ago that I was one of the suckers who was convinced that capitalism was the only system that worked, somehow ignorant of the fact that it doesn't fucking work and is not working, or, for a different perspective, is designed to only "work" for a privileged few.

But I feel like, when presented with new information, when challenged to consider whether a system that exploits that vast majority of people on the planet, leaving billions food insecure, living in substandard housing and/or without clean drinking water and/or without access to adequate healthcare, and so on, is actually something that should be supported, I was able to listen and change my mind pretty quickly and easily. When people asked me "When has a true socialist or communist system been allowed to exist unimpeded by capitalist nations," I was able to admit that I couldn't name a single instance, and thought, "huh, perhaps I was wrong."

And when fascism came knocking at my country's door, I went, "oh wow, that's fascism."

The point is that the thing I really can't handle right now is the tendency for so many other people to not only fail to recognize that capitalism hurts people and fascism is fascism, but to cling to and defend these systems. To lovingly embrace their own oppression and lash out at me for threatening it.

First, this happened:

If you click on those images to see them at full size, you can read a horrible bit of text that basically says "your bosses get to decide what you're worth and fuck you." You can also see the end of an extended argument I had with the guy who posted it. Actually, not so much an argument, but him being an ass and me unloading on him after I found out that he's an employer. He suggested that he has no boss and has his own company. So he's not actually a pathetic patsy, he's just fucking evil.

This is his sleazy, gross face, by the way:

I don't think that's his real name. Because what kind of name is that. And his Facebook profile says he worked for Freeze, Inc., but I looked it up and that company was started by two guys who have regular, non-douchey names. Anyway.

Then you can see me telling Janet to fuck off, because that's where I'm at today. I'm not in the mood to have someone tell me that because I've never been in a position to exploit others, I don't get to summarize scholarly thought on capitalism that's been discussed by all sorts of people around the globe, including those who have been in positions of that kind of power.

But also, Janet, what the fuck? You don't appear to own your own company. I mean maybe you do, and you're just like Shane, wanting to keep workers oppressed and have us give up any little bit of power we have left to those who exploit us. But if she's doesn't, then she's using her own time and energy to defend the system that exploits and oppresses her. Then she posted this:

That was this morning, and my reply is indicative of how I still feel. How in the fuck is raising the wages of workers exploiting them??? First of all, the vast majority of workers in the U.S. are not represented by unions today. If they are lucky enough to be in a union position, whether or not that union is corrupt is an entirely different issue. I'm sure I don't have to tell my readers that unions are the reason workers have any rights in this country, including a right to overtime pay after 40 hours, weekends, holidays, safety equipment, child labor laws, etc. But as unions have been demonized and membership numbers have dropped, those right have been slowly slipping away from us. Because the bosses are taking them away. So way to go, Janet. Not only do you not make any sense, you're helping guarantee the revocation of your rights.

Okay. Then I went over to Tumblr, and saw that this had happened, in response to that fucked up bill introduce in Arizona that would have allowed authorities to imprison you and literally break into your home and take your stuff if you in any way participated in a protest that "turned violent" in any way for any reason, even if you yourself did not commit any act of "violence" (which of course according to the bill included "violence" against property).

Text: "Its funny to see people responding like, “omg fascism!”  to a law that says violent rioters may be arrested, when these “protesters” are literally using violence to censor anything they disagree with and taking away other people’s constitutional right to free speech.  Tell me again, where is the fascism?  If you ask yourself this question and take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror, and at the facts, you may be surprised to find that you are on the wrong side of history."

This is where my brain nearly imploded. Protesters. Using "violence." To censor. What. The Fuck. Are you actually talking about.

This person is trying to argue that people protesting and some small scale property damage or a couple fights breaking out is being used to censor "anything they disagree with." And calling protesters fascists. They're trying to say that protesting is fascism. Protesting. Is fascism. And protesting actual fascism is fascism and puts you on "the wrong side of history."
