Alt-Right Watch: The Alt-Lite

Just kidding! There is an alt-right watch update today. But only because someone over at Daily Kos did the work for me so I didn't have to trudge through the swamp.

Trouble in white racist paradise as 'alt-right' shows its true color

Media organizations such as the Associated Press and ThinkProgress moved to stop using the term “alt-right” and simply call the white racist nationalists what they are (white racist nationalists). One person, InfoWars editor Paul Watson who said he was part of the movement, then said he wasn’t, says there are actually two movements.

I've read the term "alt-lite" before. It's a derogatory term for individuals who are Trump fans and have a lot of shitty opinions, but aren't to the point of being out-and-proud white supremacists or neo-Nazis. They're not racist enough for those who follow Richard Spencer, the neo-Nazi whom many credit for inventing the term "alt-right."

Now, thanks to the widespread sharing of the horrific video wherein Spencer leads a crowd of white supremacists in a Nazi salute for Trump and efforts to ensure that people know that alt-right = white supremacists and neo-Nazis, people who don't want to be known as white supremacists or neo-Nazis are backing away from the term.

“One is more accurately described as the New Right. These people like to wear MAGA [Make America Great Again] hats, create memes & have fun,” Watson wrote on Facebook, criticizing mainstream media for focusing on Trump’s racist supporters. “They include whites, blacks, Asians, Latinos, gays and everyone else. These are the people who helped Trump win the election.
“The other faction likes to fester in dark corners of sub-reddits” — a reference to branches of the social-media site Reddit — “and obsess about Jews, racial superiority and Adolf Hitler. This is a tiny fringe minority. They had no impact on the election.”

Sure, Paul. You're totally inclusive of those blacks and gays. Not racist at all, just into fun memes.

Anyway, I am glad to see a split happening here. It's better than the entire almost half of the country who voted for Trump joining in with the self-declared white supremacists and neo-Nazis. But don't be fooled. The "alt-lite" are still white supremacists, nationalists, racists, xenophobes, misogynists, homophobes, transphobes, etc. And the self-declared white supremacists and neo-Nazis in these "dark corners" are more than a "tiny fringe minority." There's a lot of them, and they're coming out of the dark.

Hopefully some internal conflict and infighting will make things more difficult for all of them. You can help by calling all Trump supporters the "alt-right" so that they have to expend time and energy denying their association with the group. Maybe go into these sub-reddits and start accusing people there of being alt-lite. Get them all riled up like they spent years doing to us. Now that's fun.
