'Game of Thrones' Actor Kit Harington Thinks Reverse Sexism Exists, Knows Nothing
In an interview with the U.K.'s Sunday Times, Harington said he believes there's a "double standard" when it comes to sexual objectification. "If you said to a girl, 'Do you like being called a babe?' and she said, 'No, not really,' she'd be absolutely right."
He continued, "I like to think of myself as more than a head of hair or a set of looks. It's demeaning." Harington said that while there's no doubt that there's sexism in the industry toward women, men are often targets too. "At some points during photoshoots when I'm asked to strip down, I felt that," he said. "If I felt I was being employed just for my looks, I'd stop acting."
Um, that happens to women all the time. Plus they get paid less. Plus discrimination, fewer and shittier roles, sexual harassment, stalkers, threats, constant and severe body policing, objectification, etc. etc. etc. Do you really not realize that stripping down is completely expected of female actors? That they're constantly subjected to pressure to show their boobs when the most you're going to be asked to show is your butt? That you can expect to be fully clothed on magazine covers because people focus on your acting skills and projects rather than your body? That you'll be asked questions about your roles in interviews rather than about your diet and makeup?
It never fails to blow my mind when men actually think that they experience anything close to what women experience. Kit seems like a decent guy overall and yet he can't take a single second to think or listen to any of the many women who have spoken out about the shit they deal with. These stories are completely accessible and lately have been more visible and getting more attention. What rock has he been living under?
Being asked to strip is not sexism, Kit. It may be dehumanizing, but men are not systematically sexualized and dehumanized like women are. This is not too hard for you to grasp.
So shut the fuck up.
