Obama's speech announcing his most recent executive actions, which all have to do with gun control and safety, pointed out something I've talked about before. People forget a fundamental aspect of personal rights. Your rights end where my rights begin. You have the right to say what you want until it violates the right of public safety, which is why you can be arrested for yelling "fire" in a crowded area.
Privileged people like to forget this and only support the rights that benefit them. Right to safety and living free of constant terror? Not important to cishet white men who don't experience anxiety at the very thought of just having to go out in public. Right to bear arms? Super fucking important. Especially since stockpiling guns seems to be a response to the anxiety around the government taking their stuff from them. Not that guns would or has stopped that from happening.
This is what I was talking about during the campus safety vs. "right" of college men to say whatever the fuck they want to women in a place they literally have to go to in order to get that very expensive education they need if they want a chance to make a decent living. White cishet dude's right to do whatever the fuck they want always overrides everyone else's sense of safety, no matter how many health problems are cause by stress and anxiety. And no matter how many people are gunned down on a daily basis.
