Gif of the Day

Oh my god.

Bet they never did that again.

Morning Announcements

I guess I'm taking a week off from blogging because I probably should, even though I kind of don't want to because shit keeps going down in a serious manner. But you can find information about that in other places. And I should take some time off because I have to work full time from home this week. I could have gotten out of it but capitalism has compelled me via the ever-present threat of homelessness and starvation. Anyway.

I'll probably be live tweeting the end of 2016, for which I plan to get smashed. Fuck this year.

I hope you have a paid week off. You should have more. If you have to work, I love you. Keep fighting.

Gif of the Day

I think they're developing opposable thumbs.

How Appropriate

Donald Trump is having trouble finding performers for his inauguration because everybody hates him, which is fucking beautiful. What's not beautiful is the fact that the union for the Rockettes may be forcing some of them to perform at the crowning of our possible first dictator/sith lord, saying that any who refuse will be fired, according to an email sent to dancers.

The New York Times is now reporting that the spokesperson for the managing company of the Rockettes says the appearances are voluntary, and in fact more Rockettes have volunteered for the inauguration than they have slots for! Funny, that's not what the American Guild of Variety Artists' email said.

The company’s statement seemed to contradict an email from the American Guild of Variety Artists to some of the dancers, which was forwarded to The New York Times.
“If you are full time, you are obligated,” that message read. “Doing the best performance to reflect an American institution which has been here for over 90 years is your job. I hope this pulls into focus the bottom line on this work.”

I haven't seen the full email, but that doesn't sound like a voluntary thing. It doesn't necessarily say they'll be fired, either, but combined with sentiments from former Rockettes saying that they constantly felt in fear for their jobs, I'd say the threat of termination is there.

And how appropriate, not only that a troupe of women who feel like they're owned by a corporation that also appears to select outfits for them that are not for the purpose of improving their dance performance has been invited to perform for Donald Trump's inauguration, but now it seems that they're basically being forced to perform. Or they'll be FIRED.

Mike Pence or no Mike Pence, the sooner Donald Trump dies, the better.

Anti-Black Racism is the Fucking Worst Ever Holy Fuck

[TRIGGER WARNING: GANG RAPE, SEXUAL TORTURE, CHILD RAPE, CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE, POLICE BRUTALITY, PHYSICAL ASSAULT OF A CHILD, CHOKING]

The juxtaposition of these two stories is just mind-blowingly fucking awful. I don't even recommend looking at it to be honest.

No Jail Time for White High School Football Player Who Raped Black Mentally Disabled Teammate With Hanger

KING: Black family brutalized by Texas police when trying to report a man assaulting their child

Intellectually disabled black teen in a very white area is gang raped horribly using a coat hanger, a torture that left him with severe internal injuries to his rectum and colon, and the rapist gets off with probation and the ability to have the record expunged. None of the other participants are even tried as adults.

Later, a black woman calls the police because a white man was choking her seven-year-old son because the kid threw a piece of paper on the ground. The white cop, rather than arresting the guy for assaulting a child in a way that could have killed him, starts scolding the mother for "not teaching him not to litter." The seven-year-old. This upsets the mother, and when her teenage daughter tries to get in front of her mother to calm her, the cop attacks them and the mother and both her teen daughters end up brutalized and handcuffed on the ground, then in jail.

This is the United States of White Supremacy. And if you don't believe anti-black racism is a thing still, somehow, then I literally fucking hate you.

It never gets old.

This is Very Important

A video posted by Cats of Instagram (@cats_of_instagram) on

What

Okay, someone has definitely broken the seventh seal or fucked with the timeline because now we're about to have vampires in the White House.

Before I post the headline of the article, I want to warn you that it's intensely ridiculous. Okay.

Peter Thiel Isn't the First to Think Young People's Blood Will Make Him Immortal

I think the Daily Beast is trying to be funny. I have a hard time keeping track of all the different Daily publications but at the very least, I can tell you think isn't satire. But I can't tell you whether TDB was intentionally trying to normalize the most ridiculous shit ever with that headline or not. Because seriously, like, I've talked about news media normalizing Trump and his parade of horrific white supremacists and unqualified buffoons and billionaires who want to tear down every department they've been put in charge of. But this headline.

"It's totally not weird that Donald Trump's new tech adviser wants to drink you blood. He's not even the first person ever to try to become a vampire. No biggie."

Apparently, great people like the Ancient Greeks and Leonardo da Vinci also experimented with using the blood of the youth to achieve immortality. And those guys were totally awesome. So even though the president-elect of the U.S.'s tech adviser believes in some kind of vampire alchemy, it's cool. And it's probably totally scientific. And not something out of a B horror movie.

Wish real hard and I'll make a Vampires in the White House movie poster.

In his interview Thiel acknowledged that the lack of interest in parabiosis in the medical community has often been due to society’s discomfort with the practice. It’s a cultural anxiety that Thiel would like to see displaced, but it is one that is rooted in power and exploitation as well as mere squeamishness. As the Inc article observed, it’s disquieting to imagine a business model for parabiosis on a grand scale. Ambrosia can obtain blood from blood-banks because it is conducting a trial, but how and from whom would the blood supply come if parabiosis became more common? You have to worry that it would come not from altruistic teenagers, but rather from the poor, the socially disenfranchised, and people living in developing countries.

Wow, our dystopian future is really taking shape. First fascism, then the collapse of the U.S., then the rich farmer us poorsies for blood extraction to keep them living and ruling for all of eternity.

Quick, someone make a movie before it becomes real!

Things That Will Make Bigots Angry

These are a few of my favorite things.

First, Rogue One was, as predicted, a roaring success, with a substantial opening weekend and already making nearly double its production costs in worldwide box office receipts. So much for the misogynist white supremacist boycott *sad trombone noise*.

Even better, BAFTA just announced that if your film isn't diverse enough, said film will not be eligible for any awards. No more boring movies full of cishet white dudes and their cishet white dude problems getting awarded for being fucking boring. God this is going to piss off so many bigots. I can already hear the sweet whining.

Nobody cares, Ringo.

In things that are already making bigots extremely angry, Overwatch has made one of its most popular and heavily advertised characters officially attracted to and in a relationship with a person of the same gender.

That's right. Tracer loves the ladies.

Credit for the adorableness above goes to ukiiukii.

Straight gamers, mostly straight dude gamers, are sooooooo maaaaaaad. Poor babies aren't getting as much representation because women, people of color, and LGBT+ people are getting a little. Waahhhhh.

Gif of the Day

I really want to know the context for this.

Recommended Reading

I'm gonna warn you up front. This article left me reeling in the same way I've been left reeling over and over since the 2016 election. The realizations around the shit we've got ourselves in just keep getting worse.

How Journalists Covered the Rise of Mussolini and Hitler

First we get to things I did not know, because my grasp of history is weak thanks to the equally weak U.S. education system.

The Saturday Evening Post even serialized Il Duce’s autobiography in 1928. Acknowledging that the new “Fascisti movement” was a bit “rough in its methods,” papers ranging from the New York Tribune to the Cleveland Plain Dealer to the Chicago Tribune credited it with saving Italy from the far left and revitalizing its economy. From their perspective, the post-WWI surge of anti-capitalism in Europe was a vastly worse threat than Fascism.

Wow. So fascism and dictatorship was cool with us as long as it wasn't threatening capitalism. Okay. I mean, at least this was before Nazi Germany, so maybe they didn't yet realize how bad fascism can get.

Ironically, while the media acknowledged that Fascism was a new “experiment,” papers like The New York Times commonly credited it with returning turbulent Italy to what it called “normalcy.”

And here's where I realize that while I've been comforted by the knowledge that humans have an incredible capacity to adapt and that terrible situations can become the new normal, we can also let terrible situations become the new normal. We're so desperate for "normalcy" that we'll not only deny that terrible things are out of the norm, we'll go out of our way and in fact fall all over ourselves to make terrible shit normal.

That is not good.

And then:

But the main way that the press defanged Hitler was by portraying him as something of a joke. He was a “nonsensical” screecher of “wild words” whose appearance, according to Newsweek, “suggests Charlie Chaplin.” His “countenance is a caricature.” He was as “voluble” as he was “insecure,” stated Cosmopolitan.

Uh oh.

When Hitler’s party won influence in Parliament, and even after he was made chancellor of Germany in 1933 – about a year and a half before seizing dictatorial power – many American press outlets judged that he would either be outplayed by more traditional politicians or that he would have to become more moderate. Sure, he had a following, but his followers were “impressionable voters” duped by “radical doctrines and quack remedies,” claimed The Washington Post. Now that Hitler actually had to operate within a government the “sober” politicians would “submerge” this movement, according to The New York Times and Christian Science Monitor. A “keen sense of dramatic instinct” was not enough. When it came to time to govern, his lack of “gravity” and “profundity of thought” would be exposed.

UH OH.

In fact, The New York Times wrote after Hitler’s appointment to the chancellorship that success would only “let him expose to the German public his own futility.” Journalists wondered whether Hitler now regretted leaving the rally for the cabinet meeting, where he would have to assume some responsibility.

Yep. We're repeating history. We're already in the middle of repeating history. And it's probably too late to stop.

And finally:

Dorothy Thompson, who judged Hitler a man of “startling insignificance” in 1928, realized her mistake by mid-decade when she, like Mowrer, began raising the alarm.
“No people ever recognize their dictator in advance,” she reflected in 1935. “He never stands for election on the platform of dictatorship. He always represents himself as the instrument [of] the Incorporated National Will.” Applying the lesson to the U.S., she wrote, “When our dictator turns up you can depend on it that he will be one of the boys, and he will stand for everything traditionally American.”

Alt-Right Watch: Alert for Residents of Whitefish, Montana

If you or anyone you know is Jewish and lives in or around Whitefish, Montana, I'm appalled to inform you that you've been targeted by Nazis.

The neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer put out a call to fascist action against this town's Jewish community, urging a "troll storm" against them, which could mean just about anything. But mostly it means that the threat is not going to only come from inside the town of Whitefish. Any Jewish person or organization should be prepared for online harassment and hacking. If you can, I recommend strengthening the security of your online accounts, taking down personal photos and information, and laying low until their attention passes.

I haven't had a chance to check out the actual Daily Stormer website for this shit. I found an article about it via Tumblr and I'm at work right now, and I'm not about to be perusing neo-Nazi sites on the work server. The article comes from the Missoulian, an established local daily newspaper in Montana.

Apparently, this call to hate is in retaliation for people protesting the business of the mother of out and proud white nationalist and leader of the "Heil Trump" from last month's Nazi convention Richard Spencer.

The story claims the "vicious, evil race" has harmed the Whitefish business of Richard Spencer's mother. It quotes a story from the British newspaper Daily Mail that said Sherry Spencer "said she is being forced to sell a building she owns in the small town because residents are rebelling against her son."
The site posted phone numbers, email addresses, and Twitter handles for the Whitefish residents it alleges are harassing Sherry Spencer, along with a disclaimer that it opposes violence.

Doxxing oppressed peoples to violent bigots is violence.

And what the hell does "rebelling against her son" mean? Is Richard Spencer the ruling dictator of Whitefish, Montana?

As far as I can tell from the articles I've read about it, Spencer's mom says she's suffered "financial harm" because there's an anti-Nazi group in Whitefish that's saying she's supported Richard and done nothing to stand against his hateful and harmful bigotry. So basically, people are shopping less at her stores and refusing to buy her real estate, which according to her is basically the holocaust.

Fuck you, Richard Spencer's mom. Why don't you sell your building and go open up shop in one of the many, many towns that will take you but would turn away a Jewish person or a person of color or someone wearing Muslim garb or something that looked like it. Then stop whining because you're literally putting lives at risk. Thanks to your shit son and his Nazi followers.

Enough Bullshit, Time for Real Revolution

Efforts to stop Donald Trump from becoming the president-elect have failed. But that's okay. It was never going to work. This country clearly needs real revolution - a complete overhaul - in order to fix it. No more band-aids. Come on, liberals. This program can't be patched. You must see that by now.

Now is a great time to full acknowledge that the U.S. has long been an imperialistic state that's used its power to take more and more resources and control at the expense of countless lives. We've been making people's lives miserable and committing genocide since before we became the United States of America. It needs to go. Don't try to hang onto it. Just do everything you can to prepare. I don't mean prepare to fight, because in all likelihood, the nation will fall on its own. We need to start coming together. Prepare to support those who will need it most. You can start doing that by listening to them.

I need all of you to start questioning it every time a white person is in a leadership position. Or a man. Or a cis person. Or a straight person. Or an able-bodied person. If there's a committee, is everyone represented in it? If not, why not? Who can we get in there to make it a truly effective committee? If there isn't anyone, what can we do to boost up people who are not being adequately represented so that more of them are able to take up a leadership position?

In that respect, don't look to me as a leader. I'm too privileged. I'm going to point you to women like Ijeoma Oluo, who is also calling for real revolution but is better able than I am to take you there.

As long as we go forth with the same ideas and the same patterns, the cycle will continue. We need a revolution of thought. We need to take out social justice mindset and demand it become the norm. We need to make it the norm. No more stepping on the oppressed, not for anything. We do this right or we don't do it at all.

It's time for us to prove as a species that we deserve to survive. And I mean that in a literal sense. We evolve emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually, or we destroy ourselves. Make your choice now.

Closing the door on the future of white men.

Gays in Space

Star Wars: Rogue One came out today, among the usual misogynistic man-whining about girls and people of color invading their safe space :( :( :(

Neo-Nazis and white supremacists all around have declared that they're boycotting the film, which is great news! Now we can all go see it in theaters free of horrible bigots who don't deserve to engage with any of the woman-created science fiction genre.

Meanwhile, some awesome guy apparently named Ron took some of the man-whining and did the best possible thing with it.

First of all, man-whiners: Peggy Whitson, a woman who is in space right now, is laughing at you, from space.

Secondly, BRING ON THE SPACE GAYS.

It will be full of gays next. I'm so excited.

These are just as good as the images Ron made of the comments on the official trailer on Youtube:

I'm printing out the "women ruin everything" one and framing it.

How Did This Happen?

I know this is a question that over half the country is asking right now to some degree. Some of us are asking "how did someone so unqualified get elected president?" and some of us are asking "how did someone so utterly misogynistic and who has at the very least sexually assaulted multiple women get elected president?" and some of us are asking "how did someone so racist that he was endorsed by the KKK and multiple neo-Nazi organizations get elected president?"

Etc.

These questions and more have been going through my head for weeks. How is it that the white supremacist problem has grown so much in the past couple years? I thought overt racism at least was supposed to be unacceptable now? How did so many people end up in a mental space where they could vote for a bigot, rally for a bigot, celebrate and promote bigotry, and dedicate their lives to attacking already oppressed peoples?

Unfortunately, this is a topic for a dissertation, not a blog post. Any decent answer is going to be long and complex, looking at historical, psychological, and sociological factors. Then again, maybe the answer already exists in many dissertations and books examining how humanity got to this same place in various points in history, and I'm just falling into the trap of believing that the human race has somehow grown out of its propensity for oppression, bigotry, and hatefulness.

Are we ever going to get to a place where a large portion of the human population will turn on other humans in times of stress? Will the privileged ever be willing to give up their power? And if not, what happens now that it's no longer simple for the majority oppressed population to just take it?

There are a lot of theories and pieces of fiction that deal in the idea that we're doomed to go through the same cycle over and over again. We'll grow in science and technology and population until we're capable of destroying ourselves, and then we will. All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.

Yesterday I read a very interesting Vox piece on the links between Gamergate and general online misogyny and the rise oft the so-called "alt-right." Aja Romano essentially argues that sexism came first, with white men attacking women over feminism and our supposed invading of their safe spaces (read: all of geek culture) and our free will that allows us to reject them. This sexism can then be easily stoked and manipulated into racism and white nationalism. After all, going from "women are invading men's spaces" to "people of color are invading white spaces" isn't much of a jump.

Being a white woman, I'm hesitant to say I agree. Intense racism in Gamergate and MRA groups has always been there. Women of color have always gotten it worse than us white women, but their plights often go ignored while people have rushed to the aid of white women enduring harassment.

It's not a chicken or egg situation, in any case. But I think two major root causes of the shit we're in are widespread feelings of powerlessness and the fear of weakness (of being/feeling weak or being perceived as weak). A lot of people have been talking about this supposedly ignored middle America - regular working class folks (who always just happen to be white, haha) who have had problems for years that have not been addressed and in many cases have gotten worse, and they feel like no one is talking about it, let alone trying to help.

What they're really saying is that they feel powerless. Feeling ignored is no fun, but they're haven't really been ignored. Politicians talk about and pander to "middle America" all the time. Unemployment has been addressed, and people frequently talk about the issues of wage stagnation and cost of living increases. The problem is that the talk has gone on for years and little has changed. This makes people feel powerless. They feel like they can't affect change themselves and so have to rely on their representatives, but their representatives aren't making things better.

They feel trapped. Stuck. Powerless. And what most people want to do in these situations is look for easy answers. It's easy to blame this problem on people with even less power than you, because you feel like you can do something about them. We've reached a point in this country where we all feel pretty powerless to do anything about our elected representatives, because they have too much power. They're "entrenched." So we turn on people we have power over.

Or, we can cling to the empty but passionate words of a "strong leader" type like Trump. I'd call it a charismatic type but I wouldn't call what Trump has "charisma." He's just loud and tells people what they want to hear. He plays perfectly on people's desire to attack people with less power than them while simultaneously promising to get rid of the entrenched politicians and problems that have been plaguing them. He seems "different" so they think he might be able to make things change.

Of course, they got played. Nothing will get better for them. It'll be more of the same for them and more shit for the people below them on the privilege ladder.

But for some, their intense fear and hatred of weakness has been temporarily alleviated by Trump's victory. The fear of weakness fuels toxic masculinity and misogyny since our culture equates femininity with weakness and masculinity with strength. There are many ways that ideas of strength and weakness play out in racial stereotypes, but with gender it seems to be very direct, particularly in terms of our society's false but very entrenched gender binary. So it makes sense that white men who feel powerless and fear the appearance or idea of weakness lash out at feminism and women in general, especially since dominance over women is considered to be a sign of strength in our deeply patriarchal society.

Combine this with the blaming and attacking of people of color, immigrants (but not the white ones), and Muslims (but again not the white ones), and you have the "alt-right."

Once again I've come to the conclusion that EVERYBODY NEEDS FUCKING THERAPY. Especially white men. You all need to deal with your fears and issues because you're fucking everything up.

Fat chance though lmao keep dreaming Lindsey.

Cats and bananas are somehow always a hilarious combination.

Fascism in North Carolina, Round 2

Remember when people were afraid that the former governor of North Carolina, Captain Bathrooms, was going to refuse to concede the results of the governor election that clearly had him losing to his Democrat opponent? Until eventually the majority Republican state congress used an obscure law to just straight up install him as governor?

Well, thankfully, that didn't work out for them.

Not thankfully, they're now trying a different tactic to kill any resemblance of democracy or fairness in the state.

According to the state constitution, the state House Speaker and Senate President can themselves call a super-extra-special session of the legislature, upon the petition of two thirds of legislators. Which petition (dated last Monday!) the GOP super-majority produced immediately after gaveling the Governor’s session to a close.
Tomorrow’s extra-special-super-dooper session of the General Assembly begins at 9 AM. Preceding it at 8:30 AM will be several committee meetings (all controlled by Republicans), including the committees on Election Law, Appointments, and Redistricting. During those half-hour sessions the committees will ‘consider’ bills submitted by members, and refer them to the House and Senate for votes.
Word on the street is that the bills to be brought up for a vote will strip incoming governor Roy Cooper (D) of many of his executive powers, importantly including the power to appoint members of the Board of Elections and directors of executive branch departments.

Wow so the state's about to be run by a Democrat because everybody hates Captain Bathrooms, Bigot Extraordinaire, so they're just gonna use their gerrymandered super-majority to make it so the governor has no more power right before the Democrat is sworn in.

Because FUCK what the people want.

How Are Pro-Lifers Being Pro-Life Today?

Oh, just death threats. You know, the usual for the so-called "pro-life" crowd. Nothing says pro-life like threatening to murder someone. You're performing a medical procedure that routinely saves lives, both in the literal sense and in the sense that an unwanted child can destroy any and all potential the pregnant person had? I'm going to murder you, because I'm "pro-life"!

Anyway, death threats to abortion providers increased by 46% in the 30 days following the election, and there's also been a serious surge in asshole protesters armed with lies and bloody photos of miscarriages and stillbirths.

Since the election, aggressive protesters have been flocking to the clinic, which provides abortions as well as gynecology, prenatal services and STD testing. On Saturdays dozens of protesters spread out half a block in either direction of the doorway, holding signs, screaming at women entering the clinic and impeding on the 15-foot buffer they are legally required to adhere to beyond the clinic doors.
"Their behavior has become incredibly more aggressive to the point we've had to call the police the last three to four weeks," said Camille Barbone, vice president of operations at the clinic. "There's much more condemnation than I've ever seen before. They're pushing cellphone cameras into patients' faces."

But it's all good, right? No real consequences to the election of Donald Trump. Words don't cause harm and electing a hateful shit stain doesn't embolden other hateful shit stains to spew hate at innocent people.

This is also great (all of this is sarcasm btw):

Other abortion providers across the country have seen even more aggressive tactics since election night. A clinic in Kentucky had to replace its windows after a protester threw rocks through them, and a clinic in North Carolina saw 2,500 protesters on one day — more than double the number it's accustomed to — holding Trump/Pence signs saying, "We won, you lost."

Amazing. This is what this election is to Trump supporters. It's a game. All they care about is "winning," nevermind the fact that people's lives are now increasingly at risk due to the spike in hate crimes and incoming registries, mass deportations, and fucking Nazis.

It's callous on a level that I cannot even begin to grasp. Yet they call themselves "pro-life."

They're pro-neo-conservative ideology. That's it.

Some Positive Shit

Positive shit right now RIGHT NOW.

First of all the We The People petition to commute Chelsea Manning's sentence did reach 100,000 signatures in time, so the White House will have to respond. Even if she isn't released, something good did come out of this.

I'm so glad she knows that she's not been forgotten. But it won't be good enough until she's free.

Also, a 25-year-old Malaysian women has probably saved humanity from the devastation of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

But Shu Lam, a 25-year-old PhD student at the University of Melbourne in Australia, has developed a star-shaped polymer that can kill six different superbug strains without antibiotics, simply by ripping apart their cell walls.
"We’ve discovered that [the polymers] actually target the bacteria and kill it in multiple ways," Lam told Nicola Smith from The Telegraph. "One method is by physically disrupting or breaking apart the cell wall of the bacteria. This creates a lot of stress on the bacteria and causes it to start killing itself."

Thank you, Shu Lam! Women of color to the rescue!

Look at this adorable couple's amazing, love-filled engagement photoshoot.

Lastly, here is a video of a chinchilla holding a balloon:

I love you. Carry on.

Alt-Right Watch: Recommended Reading

Whaaaaaaaaat I combined two regular blog segments into one amalgam of laziness! I (finally) noticed that We Hunted the Mammoth (formerly "Manboobz"), the site dedicated to keeping tabs on MRAs and other elements of the "manosphere," has expanded into its own alt-right watch. Blogger and all around male ally (and I use that term very sparingly) David Futrelle has been writing about the various activities of white supremacists and neo-Nazis, many of whom are MRAs and general putrid misogynists. Actually, they're all misogynists. Because you can't hate people of color without hating women of color. Just liking white women for our (assumed) ability to give you sexual pleasure and white babies doesn't count.

Anyway, Futrelle mainly focuses on individuals, as well as individual actions and events. My segment is meant to more broadly educate about neo-Nazi tactics and beliefs as well as to warn about ongoing and upcoming actions by white supremacist groups. But if you want to be as educated as possible on these fucks without having to dive into the swamp yourself, you might want to start checking up on We Hunted the Mammoth.

Please note that while I've found Futrelle to be better than most at avoiding problematic and triggering language, I have not found him to be perfect. But at least the original transmisogynistic name of the site has changed.

Here Comes Fascism!

So we've all heard about the possible resurrection of the highly ineffective but most importantly fascist Muslim registry by the Trump administration. That is an incredibly fucked up thing by itself and needs to be fought at all costs especially by those of us who didn't fight it the first time around.

But did you know that there are more lists being made of particular types of people? It's not as bad as targeting a specific and marginalized religious group, but so far we have:

Should I be worried? I mean, has anything bad ever happened after lists were made of academics and/or scientists?

Let's Talk About Anarchism

In the past few months, I've been increasingly drawn to the ideas, passion, and penchant for direct action of anarchists. For the vast majority of my life, the only exposure I've had to the idea of anarchism has been (highly biased) news reports of anarchists protesting when they dare to break some windows or push back against the police. This was usually followed by my family members mocking anarchism based on a complete understanding of what it even is.

Anarchism is against hierarchies, power imbalances, and what they call "the state." They're not against any and all forms of government - they're against government systems that allow a few people to take power and resources from the rest. This is hard to grasp at a glance because none of us have existed in a world where there are any recognizable governments that aren't like this. This does not mean it's impossible. It used to exist all over the world before white imperialists went out and extinguished it wherever they could find it. And it still exists in this world today.

I need to do a lot more reading on anarchism before I could call myself an anarchist or claim any kind of expertise, but it's clear to me that I've been fed a lot of misinformation on them, and I clearly now find their ideas intriguing. The more I learn about anarchism, the more I find that it lines up with my ideals.

One interesting thing about me is that there is one thing that I and Republicans can agree on, though they don't seem to talk about it much anymore. And that's the importance of small government. I do believe that it's difficult to impossible for representatives in D.C. to understand or be able to truly empathize with the average person they represent, let alone those who are in the most need. And it's real easy not to care about people you never interact with or even lay eyes on. But believing in small government has to go way beyond yelling "states rights" every time the federal government passes a law you don't like.

Many anarchists seem to believe in the idea of breaking up large nations into comparatively very small communities that govern by direct consensus. I have on many occasions felt like this kind of thing could be the only way that humanity could work due to the human capacity for greed and corruption.

Obviously, this is not an easy thing to achieve. We're talking about a destruction of society as we know it. That of course scares the powerful, but is also difficult to face for anyone who relies on our fucked up system to survive. This is where I think a lot of anarchists fall short.

Many anarchists are white men, though there are growing collectives of anarchists of color. I watched a video today by an anarchist who talked about traveling the world and sleeping on couches and eating out of dumpsters during his travels. This kind of thing would not be safe for me as a white woman. Imagine if I were a woman of color with chronic pain or a physical disability or more severe mental illness, or were trans, or a combination of those! It's real hard to want to go along with or encourage the collapse of society when you need hormones, pain medication, anti-depressants, or any of the many medications people take to live.

I'm not saying we should do nothing. But white anarchist men show their privilege often, particularly in their callous attitude toward the idea of our society collapsing. As far as I'm concerned, if we can't achieve anarchist utopia without sacrificing the most vulnerable, we don't deserve it.

I don't know if I'll live long enough to see anarchist ideas take hold in this end-stage capitalism world. But it's becoming more and more clear that I have no idea what I'll live to see. The world could look very different in the next couple decades.

Gif of the Day

I love how this shows you how pup will grow into those ears.

Alt-Right Watch: Nazis in the Library

Libraries are supposed to be bastions of liberalism but apparently at least one Nazi group is using it as a secret recruitment center. According to SadGayRadical (great user name), Nazi recruitment forms were found in the library at Columbia University, hidden in a hollowed-out book that was out of place in the political science section among books about "nationalism" and "westernization." Tumblr won't let me go directly to the author's page for some unknown reason.

For whatever reason, the link to the article that talked about this is no longer working. My first thought is that the school administration either took it down because it seemed too outlandish to be true, or because they were afraid it would hurt the university's reputation. It's probably the latter but they'll use the former as an excuse.

Other important information to learn from this post:

  • "DarkEn," short for "Dark Enlightenment," is a Nazi term.
  • "The Cathedral" is Nazi code for "the establishment."
  • "Post-democracy" is common Nazi rhetoric.

The post suggests checking your local library for books that seem out of place in the political science section or wherever else you might find books about nationalism and other racist/xenophobic concepts. If you don't feel comfortable beating them with a baseball bat, you can instead maybe snap a photo of them to post online so that everyone else can avoid that person at all costs. Maybe replace the Nazi recruitment forms with passages from the Communist Manifesto just to fuck with them. Your choice.

RIP People of Aleppo

I haven't talked about Aleppo on here nearly at all. As the crisis has gotten worse over there, events transpired in the U.S. that took up all my emotional energy to deal with. That's probably the same reason a lot of us in the U.S. have been ignoring the horrific death and destruction rained down upon the civilians caught in the bullshit civil war/chess game between the U.S. and Russia. But as we've dealt with the election of Donald Trump and his filling up the White House with white supremacists, thousands of civilians have died, and many more been displaced.

400,000 have been killed since March 2011. Syrians losing their homes and basically everything else have been referred to as a "migrant crisis" and increasing measures have been taken by numerous countries to ensure that these people have nowhere to go. And now, those who couldn't flee are facing the last hours of this war and possibly the last hours of their lives. Or maybe that was hours ago already, I don't know. But last night, Aleppo residents were sending out farewell tweets as the state army closed in on the last rebel-controlled areas of the city, supported by intense shelling and bombing.

AlJazeera just reported that civilians are being killed on the spot by pro-government forces. It just so happens that yesterday, I read a beautiful piece from The Establishment by Lili Hirsch about her step-grandmother's story of growing up in WWII Germany and the fucked up shit she endured, including nearly being murdered by a Russian soldier while her dad had a heart attack. During the final days of WWII, the Red Army was very much encouraged to do everything possible to terrorize German civilians, including shooting them on the spot (and worse). This was revenge on Germany, despite the fact that the people they murdered and traumatized were largely poor people who had nothing to do with the war at all. But that didn't matter.

It's been the same with Syria. Months ago I read about civilians being evicted and arrested and tortured just for being in territories occupied by rebel forces or formerly occupied by rebel forces because that's where there homes were and always have been. But because they were in the vicinity of the rebels, they were automatically suspected of colluding with them. It might have been the same with the rebels that took over formerly government-occupied areas. These poor civilians were completely fucked for no reason and no fault of their own. They were treated as worse than enemies. They were treated as less than human.

So it's not surprising that this has escalated into civilians just being bombed out and randomly murdered in the streets. This is what happens in war like this. And the U.S. is largely responsible for the start and the continuation of the war. Because we're playing a fucking chess game with Russia. Or at least, that's what our governments act like it is. They can't be fucked to care that there are real people living and dying in Syria. That 400,000 civilian bodies are the result of their game.

I hope the tweets will help people outside of Syria begin to realize that the people of Aleppo are actual people. Not statistics, not chess pieces, not an abstract idea, not a different species. They're people who use Twitter just like any person in the U.S. And what's happening to them is a "complete meltdown of humanity."

And so many of them are dead now. It's too late to save them. I'm sorry, people of Aleppo. We failed you. Rest in peace.

Gif of the Day

I'm sorry, could you repeat that?

What Now?

I've been doing plenty of thinking since my "oh my god we have three years until the collapse of the U.S. and an empire and a world power" freakout. It's been pointed out to me that no matter how bad it gets, shit will always even out into the new normal. Of course, this is based on the fact that I have enough privilege that I'm very unlikely to become homeless or die as a result of whatever. I'll adjust.

The real shit is going to happen to the people with less privilege than me. People of color, particularly those who may be labeled as Muslim or Latinx (whether they are or not). Trans and nonbinary people. Gay, lesbian, bi, pan, queer, etc. youth and adults in same sex relationships. Jewish people. Disabled people. Chronically ill people. People in deeper poverty than I am and who don't have middle class family they can fall back on (or only abusive family).

There are many people who are not going to be okay. We need to redouble our efforts. We need to be ready to come together to support each other. I've realized I need to give up my modest dreams of living with my boyfriend in a two bedroom apartment or maybe a condo. Communal living may become a necessity and would be more helpful to others. I'm a good roommate.

I was going to put more effort and energy into concrete social action anyway. If the U.S. as we know it crumbles, we need to fight as hard as we can to build something better in its place. There will be opportunists who will try to take as much power as they can and do everything possible to keep it. That can't happen. If we prepare and do things right, we can create a society that works for all people, not just a privileged few.

Unfortunately, recount efforts have failed. It's still very unlikely that enough Electoral College voters will vote against their districts to put Clinton in the White House. It's time to prepare for the worst. Prepare the seeds to plant in the rubble. Prepare for loss. And hope that the world can come out the other side better. At least maybe the U.S. will have to stop bombing everybody.

I went to that strike today, which is why there's only one post, fairly late. It wasn't much in Seattle, but I heard a lot of amazing women share their stories and voices. And I'll keep participating in strikes and going to protests and volunteering and writing. I'll keep going. Always.

WHAT

Recommended Reading

I just read a really interesting piece on the subject of collective responsibility for atrocities, focusing on the holocaust and speculation about whether Trump and his administration are Nazis.

This analysis is full of amazing quotes that'll smack you right in the face.

"Thus, the question isn’t whether Trump and his ilk are Nazis; it’s whether Americans are, or would be willing to accept it if they were."

Are we willing to let ourselves become a neo-Nazi nation? Are we already?

In America, we learn that Hitler and the Nazis committed the Holocaust; in Germany, German children learn that they all participated in it, because the Germans came to believe that acknowledging their collective culpability as individuals was the only way to prevent it from ever happening again.

Shit.

"History isn’t always written by the victors, especially if there’s a version that makes everyone feel a little less guilty."

Fuck!

But a large body of psychological research suggests that once we’re ordered to do something atrocious, we feel relieved of the burden of feeling guilty about doing it. As matters stand, we have to train college kids to intervene when they witness sexual assaults, because the most common psychological reaction to being a bystander to an atrocity is . . . to stand by.

Those quotes are even better in context, so go read the entire thing. And start thinking about what you need to do in order to not be a Nazi, or at best, a passive collaborator in a neo-Nazi empire.

Um. Oh.

Here's the thing. I worry quite frequently that the people who read my blog regularly, a good chunk of whom are my friends and family, probably, will think I'm too extreme. Not in my views about how the world should be. I'm proud of my extreme idealism in that respect. No, I'm afraid that you'll think I'm going too far into conspiracy theories or doomsday scenarios.

The truth is, it's hard to call the "alt-right" Nazis. There's this constant nagging voice in the back of my head that says I'm exaggerating, that I'm being ridiculous and embarrassing myself. Even after the video of white supremacist conference full of Nazi salutes to Trump. And there's a reason I feel that way. It's because, through media, we've turned Nazis and white supremacists into boogeymen. They've been so sensationalized and caricatured that it's hard to image they were ever real, let alone that any might still be around. Or that they're more than a few [insert ableist slur here] guys in Kentucky, or that they could possibly be a threat.

But they are. And they always have been.

Before Trump won the election (or was projected to get the majority of the electoral college votes), I, clearly, had not yet accepted that. I thought that trolls and Men's Rights Activists were a minor threat via their toxic rhetoric, and that though there were still plenty of everyday racists, almost none of them were Nazi level. I felt that things were worse than most average people out there knew, but I was hesitant to go into the territory of societal collapse or what most people call "conspiracy theories."

Can you guess where this blog post is going?

In spite of everything, including the typical tone of this blog, I consider myself a general optimist. I think people are basically good, and the problem is that most people live and grow up in toxic conditions, emotionally and mentally (and to a certain point, physically). And I went on believing that things would be pretty much okay, for most of us, or at least for me. Partially because of optimism and partially because it's hard to feel how I'm feeling right now.

You ready? This is what's got me legitimately scared:

US Power Will Decline Under Trump, Says Futurist Who Predicted Soviet Collapse

That's not all he's predicted.

Galtung has also accurately predicted the 1978 Iranian revolution; the Tiananmen Square uprising of 1989 in China; the economic crises of 1987, 2008 and 2011; and even the 9/11 attacks—among other events, according to the late Dietrich Fischer, academic director of the European University Center for Peace Studies.

And it's not just a "decline" in power that he's predicting for the country I live in.

Back in 2000, Galtung first set out his prediction that the “US empire” would collapse within 25 years. After the election of President Bush, though, he revised that forecast five years forward because, he argued, Bush’s policies of extreme militarism would be an accelerant.

So. We have three years? Maybe?

Galtung told Motherboard that Trump would probably continue this trajectory of accelerated decline—and may even make it happen quicker. Of course, with typical scientific caution, he said he would prefer to see what Trump’s actual policies are before voicing a clear verdict.

Oh great, cool, whenever you're ready with that, buddy. Take your time and all that, haha.

I've brushed off a lot of scary predictions in recent years, because it was easier that way. But predictions of bad things keep. Coming. True. And this one makes a lot of sense.

Firstly, Galtung's prediction model is based on contradictions. According to this guy, there are strong patterns of intensifying contradictions in 10 examples of historic empire collapse. And by "contradictions," he means lies and hypocrisy. Saying you'll do one thing and then doing the opposite. Saying doing a thing is bad and then doing that thing.

What have I been talking about here lately? Was it how Trump voters got scammed and the baffling hypocrisy of the "alt-right"?

I almost don't want to share this, because what can most of us do but continue to live our lives? Who needs this kind of anxiety? Or to know that their dreams are dead before they could ever start to become a reality?

But you'll probably be better off with a decent warning. Three years. Put aside some food and supplies, maybe. Learn some practical skills. Buy some of those non-GMO seeds? The ones that will make more seeds, I mean. I guess I'll start reading up on what tends to happen during an empire collapse. Money may become worthless. I think you'll be better off stocking up on antibiotics than gold, though.

I can't believe I'm saying this shit. I hope Galtung's wrong. I hope we all end up okay. But unless something really cool happens this month, I don't think things will ever be the same. I hope it ends up being for the better.

Stick together. Help each other. Do good.

Gif of the Day

I keep forgetting to do the gif of the day at home where my stash of gifs is, so at work I googled "Tumblr gif" and what comes up is mostly black and white gifs of women's faces. I like this one.

The Restricted Life of the Neo-Nazi

The kinds of dudes I've now come to recognize as white supremacists/neo-Nazis have always raised the cry of FREEDOOOOOOOOMMMMM to defend their ideology decrying leftist "PC culture" as being restrictive and lambasting constantly about freedom of speech and maybe gun-having. But one thing I've observed about this group is that it's one of the most restrictive I've ever seen. In order to be a part of this particular ingroup, you must follow a large set of strange, often-conflicting and ever-changing rules, many of which describe things that you are not allowed to do.

These include:

  • You can't be anything but an able-bodied neurotypical cis straight white dude within a certain body type range. No exploring gender or sexuality.
  • You can't touch other men except maybe to bump fists.
  • You can't use certain words such as "people of color" or "privilege" or anything that might make you seem like a liberal.
  • You must use a certain amount of slurs per Internet post unless you're trying to convince a normal person that your way of thinking is not terrible.
  • You cannot do anything that might be interpreted as "feminine" or "feminized," ever, including putting your hand over your mouth.
??????

  • You can only be in a relationship if it's with a white woman and you treat her like shit.
  • Certainly no crying, not even over the death of fellow Nazis in your super manly WWII movies.
  • No liking anything made or run by a Jewish person, which according to them is like everything.
  • You must exhibit maximum asshole behavior at all times or you're a "cuck" or whatever.

This is just a small sampling. The number of random things I've seen these dudes call "feminine" or "gay" or "Jewish" (and I'm cleaning up the language here, of course) boggles the mind. Even just taking all the things that women do, that's a lot of things to not be allowed to do. Women also sneeze and poop and breathe. Are these things now women-like and therefore "physically repulsive" to Nazis?

I hope so.

The President-Elect Has His Own Vigilante Force

The sooner you realize this and let the full horror of it sink in, the better off you'll be.

Trump just put a man’s family in jeopardy. In what world is this ever acceptable?

A union leader said on Twitter that Trump lied his ass off about the Carrier deal, which he did. Trump, being the utterly petty, fragile ego nightmare that he is, took to Twitter to smear the union and its leader, Chuck Jones.

It's bad enough that we have a president-elect who can't let any criticism go like any elected official needs to be a able to do because they're supposed to be fucking adults. But after Trump tweeted about Jones, he started receiving death threats targeting himself and his family. Including his kids.

The neo-Nazis and white supremacists that helped get this incredibly delicate flower elected aren't stopping. Now that he's set to become the leader of the U.S., they're transitioning to become his online vigilante squad. The SS in khaki shorts, if you will. You can expect that from now on, every person who is targeted by Trump in this kind of public manner will have to endure the tidal wave of harassment that has become the standard of this online bigot mob. Harassment, death threats, rape threats if they're a woman, hacking, DDoS attacks, etc.

To counter this, my suggestion is that we all start constantly bashing Trump on Twitter, even more than we already have. The more privilege you have, the more you should be bashing. @ Trump's official account constantly to tell him what a liar and general piece of shit he is. Because he's so thin-skinned, he won't be able to let much go by without responding. We can tie up Trump's time and attention and the "alt-right's" resources with online harassment while those of us more vulnerable to harassment work on getting this shitbag out of office in 2020.

We need to do all we can to fight back before they get organized (if that's possible for them) and start patrolling the streets. I don't necessarily want to bash actual heads in but I will if I have to.

Gif of the Day

You are now yawning.

Strike!

[TRIGGER WARNING: MENTION OF RAPE, SEXUAL ASSAULT, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, AND ANTI-ABORTION ACTIVITY]

Are you pissed off about the current state of things in the U.S.?

Are you flabbergasted that an overcooked cheese danish-looking blowhard who openly bragged about sexually assaulting women, who very likely raped at least one teen girl, who openly talked about wanting to fuck his own daughter, and whose modeling company was caught running a human trafficking ring became president-elect of the United States of America?

Are you infuriated by the fact that Mike "Fuck All Your Reproductive Rights" Pence is the vice president-elect as well?

Have you experienced murder spasms at the fact that anti-choice shit stains in Ohio just passed a blatantly illegal "fetal heartbeat" bill through the House and Senate that cuts off abortion access at six weeks?

Are you a woman or femme-identified person living in the U.S.?

Fucking strike!

A cross-generational group of US women is planning a nationwide strike against Trump

Massaro’s vision grew to be the group, Women and Allies. Inspired by historic, women-led strikes in Iceland that protested the gender pay gap, Massaro and other organizers are hoping that women across the US walk out of their jobs and refuse to buy anything for 24 hours. They want to send a message to the Electoral College and the American people that women will not stand for misogyny and discrimination.

The official Facebook page for the nation-wide strike can be found here. From there, the pinned post contains links to Facebook events being hosted in other cities for the same strike. There's one in Seattle, and you can fucking bet I'm missing work for that.

The strike is on the 12th, just five days from today. Of course, it's completely understandable if you can't miss work. But this is not just a strike. On the same day, a general boycott has been declared. Get all your shopping done the weekend before, and on Monday, don't buy anything unless it's absolutely necessary.

This is the worker's/anti-capitalist strike I've been waiting for. It needs to be a big success so it can keep happening. If we can get enough people on board, this will get people to pay the fuck attention. But there's not a lot of time, so spread the word quickly!

Alt-Right Watch: Neo-Nazi Arguing Tactics

It's real nice of neo-Nazis to keep lists of their tactics and priorities and everything around so that the rest of us can know what to expect. I didn't even have to go looking for this one. I found it on Tumblr thanks to another person who's trying to warn people about Nazi and white supremacist activity.

Today it's a list of sneaky argument tactics and general language use best practices that these asswipes are encouraged to use to confuse people and hide the extent of their horribleness from the rest of the world. This comes directly from Stormfront, a classic neo-Nazi organization. It apparently doesn't occur to them that if your real intentions are so awful that you have to use tricky language to soften it for normal people, you're probably on a bad path. Unless you're just cool with being evil. Which I think a lot of them are. Anyway.

This is again unnerving because I've seen these tactics used time and time again over the past few years and I've seen some of these slogans on fucking billboards and shit.

Here are images of the text:

And I'm also going to paste the entirety of the text from the source, typos and bad punctuation left intact. No point in linking to an archived page since none of this is actually a secret.

1. Stay on message; we deal with the genocide of White people and the perpetrators, anti-Whites. When talking to the general public don't go into a rant about Jewish conspiracies, banking families, NWO, etc. White genocide is the first step to establish a beachhead in the general population's consciousness -- we can expand on other ideas later.
2. Use the Mantra and our talking points. Everything anti-Whites say always leads to our genocide, and we have good ways to counter their talking points. You can customise our stuff and use it for yourself.
3. Use our terminology; "Anti-White", "Pro-White", "White genocide", "Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White", "Africa for the Africans, Asia for the Asians, White countries for everybody".
4. "Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White" should be the last thing in your post if possible.
5. Don't use their terminology; "racist" should ONLY be used in "anti-racist"; "nazi" should ONLY be used in naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews"; "HATE!", "holocaust", "facist" "LOVE!" should be avoided; "diversity", "multicultural" can be pointed out as meaning less White people. Avoid using "The White race", "Caucasians", "The Whites", because it makes it look distant and turns it into a philosophical debate; use 'Our people', 'My people', 'White people', etc.
6. Capitalize "White", when you're talking about our race.
7. ALWAYS use "Genocide", NEVER use "Extinction", "Population Displacement", "Demographics shift", etc.
8. NEVER call them "antis", they are "anti-White" - they are against White people existing.
9. Use "As an anti-White" e.g. "As an anti-White why do you think more assimilation is required in ONLY White countries?".
10. Don't argue, make our point: ALL White countries & ONLY White countries are told by anti-Whites, who claim to be "anti-racist", that they must accept millions of non-Whites and 'assimilate' with them, which is genocide under UN genocide conventions. If people get annoyed of hearing our message that's good, it means they can remember it!
11. This isn't about anti-Whites; we are talking to the general public, USE the anti-Whites to humilate them and point out that they support White genocide. A lot of the general public are tired of "anti-racists" (anti-Whites) and WE have to show them how to defeat and humiliate them.
12. Be aggressive and take the moral high-ground; if they call you names say "You're only saying that because I'm White".
13. Think before you talk. Talking about commiting violence is a no-go. No talking about genocide tribunals because it makes us look dangerous. Using lots of bad language is going to make you - and us - look stupid. That does not mean treat anti-Whites with dignity.
14. YOU ask the questions. If you don't get a reply keep asking them - it means your opponent is embarrassed and is trying to get off the subject. If they demand you answer questions say "WE ask the questions, because YOU support/justify genocide of MY people!".
15. Use emotional language; "Why do you hate little White children?", "Why do you want to genocide little White babies?".
16. Winning isn't important; you should be winning all of the arguments with the anti-Whites if you do what Bugsters do, but don't worry if you lose a few of them -- this is about imposing our terminology and getting the public talking about White genocide.
17. Know your target audience and wrap our message around what appeals to them.
Young adults want to talk about education fees and housing prices, Teens want to talk about music, Old people want to talk about pensions, etc. Try to connect with the people using their language/colloquialisms e.g. "Dude" "Mate" "Bloke" "Howdy" "Yeah" "Lol" "Rofl"
18. Flip the script. What if ALL Asian countries were told to bring in immigrants and assimilate with them? What if "anti-racists" in Africa demanded that Africans stopped patrolling their borders and kicking out illegal immigrants?
19. We're all part of the team. Remember to report any places that you post.

A note on "Bugsters" or "BUGS": These are white supremacists and neo-Nazis who dedicate their time to going around online and spreading their Nazi propaganda around using the tactics listed above. According to the source, there are now automated programs doing this shit all over places like YouTube, 4chan, and other sites that have been identified as popular spaces for the kinds of people (young, white, male) who are vulnerable to this propaganda.

I want you to pay attention to the tactics used. There's a lot of subtle language manipulation going on. This wording, repeated over and over, can change the way people think about certain things. This has been studied time and time again by psychologists and found to be true. It shows how dangerous the mantra of "words are just words" is. I'm beginning to think the spread of the idea that words can't be used to hurt people was part of the white supremacist/neo-Nazi plan. Bring down people's defenses by spreading the idea that you're weak or whatever if you let words affect you, then start using word manipulation to plant white supremacist ideas into people's minds.

Simple, and it clearly worked.

Here's what you should do. Familiarize yourself with this kind of language and argument tactics. If you're like me, you've probably already seen them used. Once you've done that, you can spot a neo-Nazi from across the Internet. And once you've spotted them, do not engage. At most, use it as an opportunity to show others, if they can see the argument, how the person is using sneaky bullshit to manipulate an argument that can't be won using honest means. Then focus on plain truths. There is no white genocide, and they're a Nazi. "You're a Nazi, your argument is invalid." It's as simple as that.

#16 on the list says it all. It's not about winning. The actual content of their argument, the rightness of it, the logic (or lack thereof), none of that matters. All they want is to get their insidious "message" out there and trick people into taking their Nazi shit seriously. Into thinking that they might have some kind of a point. And they'll exploit the old liberal mantra of "everyone's opinion is valid and deserves to be heard" to do that. #10 even tells them that they're not to argue, so don't let them trick you into thinking that it's even an argument at all.

No. Out them as a Nazi, block them, delete their comments, report them. They want to you take them seriously and argue with them. Do Not. Do not let them air their toxic ideology out in your space. Do not tolerate Nazi propaganda.

At this point, I want to take a moment to laugh at "why do you want to genocide little white babies?" LOL. Okay. Don't argue with Nazis. The end.

DAPL Update: Probably Not At All Over

There are various concerns about the denial of easement to the Dakota Access Pipeline company and whether this will stop the construction of the pipeline even in the short term. There have been unconfirmed reports by people on the ground that the company is still drilling. It looks like, technically, the company is only prevented from drilling under the river, and should they decide to go ahead and drill their anyway, they'll only be facing fines which may not be more than the money they're losing every day the completion of the pipeline is delayed. $50,000 per day may sound like hefty fineage to us mortals, but...

The company, Energy Transfer Partners (EPT) are being big whiners about having their death pipe delayed, and have alarmingly declared that the pipeline will be completed no matter what happens.

“As stated all along, ETP and SXL are fully committed to ensuring that this vital project is brought to completion and fully expect to complete construction of the pipeline without any additional rerouting in and around Lake Oahe. Nothing this Administration has done today changes that in any way.”

This may only be to reassure their shareholders. But I have no doubt that it's also a direct statement to water protectors and everyone else opposed to this pipeline. This isn't over. They're going to keep fighting, and we need to as well.

The back and forth, continuously broken promises, and escalating brutality at Standing Rock are during the area into a powder keg. It's reported that there are already 5,000 veterans there, and water protectors have announced that they will not be leaving until the pipeline is 100% stopped, for all time. A win or loss here could set the stage for all future contested pipelines. And capitalists seem absolutely determined to ensure that they win this one. We have to fight back just as hard. Don't forget about this.

I'll be watching for more news on this and will alert everyone I know as soon as things gear up again. In the meantime, water protectors are still going to need supplies, so keep donating/sharing donation posts. It's not over until the snake is dead.

Alt-Right Watch: Convenient List of Websites to Avoid

Or, for me, to slog through to try and glean some real information out of the layers of bad information.

As people begin to become aware of the problem of fake news sites and make lists of them to keep track of who not to listen to (there are a lot), neo-Nazis are responding to this by both expressing pride in making this "forbidden" list and decrying the use of blacklists, which, if you know anything about Nazis, will set off all your hypocrisy alarms. Was it just last week that I found out 8chan keeps a list of Jewish people? Time has no meaning in this pre-Trump post-decency hellscape.

Anyway, some shitty Nazi site that oddly enough uses a poorly-cropped image of a woman of color as its icon posted this list so that you can make sure to stay the fuck away from all of that. Warning for ableist slurs and mention of rape in the post along with the usual anti-semitism and racism. Here's the archived version of the site to keep that Nazi residue off your browser history.

The rest of the post is a lot of exaggerating and flattering of themselves. I continue to hate the exploitation of women via fake concern about our well-being and safety. It's pretty fucking rich that the same people who want to take away any and all of our human rights, confine us to the kitchen, and repeal marital rape laws are soooooo concerned that refugees and immigrants (people of color) are going to come to our homes are rape us.

And apparently, if I'm reading this right, the Nazis are trying to claim that the fake news sites contain real news? Like, even the Russian Twitter bots? It's confusing and I'm tired. But it seems like they're dedicated to pushing the narrative that the fake news isn't fake, but the fake news thing has already taken off because the mainstream media takes exception to being overshadowed and manipulated like that. The damage has been done, though many people will likely go on falling for fake headlines.

It's also possible that hard-right, not necessarily alt-right individuals may be so contrarian to the mainstream media that they might be more inclined to believe Nazi lies. This is yet another thing we need to keep an eye on.
