Look At This Awesome Thing: Mineral Dragons

I haven't done one of these in a long time, and we could all use a little cheering up.

Mineral dragons!

Calcite dragon is my favorite.

You can see them all here. Apparently they're made by someone named Pythosblaze? I can't find the source, so if anyone knows, please comment so that I can give credit where it's due.

And don't forget, dragons are feminist icons!

How Are Pro-Lifers Being Pro-Life Today?

Trying to get up in time to go to a coffee shop so I can write without all the distractions of home and actually get myself out of the apartment but also make breakfast first so I don't have to spend all my money on $5 muffins and pre-made egg sandwiches (even though I order $5 coffee drinks, and don't worry, I tip generously) and get started writing before noon is somehow a little impossible, at least on Mondays. Good luck getting content from me in the morning unless you live in Hawaii.

Also, every coffee shop is now playing Christmas music 24/7. If you didn't yet know this about me, constant Christmas music makes my urge to kill rise. Also, don't wear lipstick and then get a coffee for here unless you want to worry about totally ruining the independent coffee shop's nice ceramic cups and have to painstakingly wipe off the lipstick marks with every sip.

Anyway, what fuckery went on during the long weekend? Oh yeah, a white "pro-life" man went into a Planned Parenthood and killed three people.

It's already been pointed out a thousand times how this is terrorism and how one of the people he killed was a cop and he shot like five other cops but still managed to come out the other side alive, unlike black people who do things like walk fast or have a look on their face. It continues to baffle how people don't think white privilege is a thing.

Republicans and anti-choicers are, of course, trying with all their desperate hypocritical power to pretend that it doesn't matter that this man is anti-choice and conservative. Ted Cruz went so far as to burst out that "[i]t’s also been reported that he was registered as an independent and a woman and transgendered leftist activist."

Only the first thing is true, and ignores the fact that in the U.S., "independent" means "Republican who wants to smoke weed" and/or "someone so conservative that they're angry at Republicans for not being conservative enough." Apparently there was a voter's registration form that identified him as female, but that was probably just a typo.

Is there any point to calling attention to the fact that Republicans don't want us to "jump to conclusions" about this "[insert ableist slur here] individual" when they all want to refuse entry to Syrian refugees because some terrorists were incorrectly identified as Syrian but were in fact European nationals? Their rhetoric works for them, so they'll keep at it until it doesn't, no matter how many of us point out their massive throbbing hypocrisy. At this point, we need to focus on ending the rampant gerrymandering they've used to fuck up voting districts so that we can finally vote them all the fuck out and go back to being a functioning country before the violent revolt happens.

I don't think the non-cop victims of this terrorist act have been identified yet, so we don't know if they were employees or just people going there for help (not that it matters, nobody deserved to die there), but they died because of people like Ted Cruz and other "pro-life" hatemongers who made this man think he was justified in committing murder. He was saying something about "baby parts," so shout out to the anti-choice organizations who made those heavily edited lie-filled videos that they knew were total lies but put them out anyway because all of their sins are justified to save the babies, right? Well, I hope you're happy. Blood is on your hands.

Anti-choicers are murderers.

Gif of the Day

You're welcome.

Morning Announcements

I'm taking the rest of this week off for Thanksgiving. Also I've got a new writing gig, and it's a lot of work! Don't worry, as usual, I have no plans to ever stop blogging.

Enjoy your weekend everyone! If you're working because your employer is making you or if you have to work because you desperately need the money, either way, may your employer be struck with a ghosts-of-Christmas-whatever moment and give you all the raise you deserve.

And of course, fuck U.S. imperialism and genocide forever.

Worst Idea Ever

I know the whole "I can't even" thing is over, but all I could think when I saw this was that this is the can'test I ever been even.

Nazi Symbols Covering NYC Subway Train Cause Furor on Social Media

"Furor." God damnit, Mic.

But yeah, this is a real thing that happened. In New York. Look at this shit:

Can you imagine being a Jewish person and walking into a subway car like you do every Monday morning and seeing this? Or a person of color, or an LGBTQAIP+ person, or a disabled person? Anyone the Nazis hated? Or especially someone who actually survived the holocaust?? Walking in there all old and seeing that? ARE THEY TRYING TO GIVE PEOPLE HEART ATTACKS??????

This went through so many channels, too. Someone had to come up with the idea, pitch it to their boss, then they had to get approval from the city to do this to the subway, and then they had to hire someone to paint the seats like this. All this happened and no one was like "oh my god this is the worst idea of all time what are you even thinking stop immediately."

But yeah, what happened is that, someone's making a TV show or whatever about "what if the axis powers had won WWII?" and to advertise it they created that U.S. flag with the Nazi eagle and painted that all over the subway seats, plus the Japanese WWII rising sun flag. You know, to give extra heart attacks to Chinese and Korean residents of New York.

This worst advertising ever has already been removed because, of course, people complained about it, but it still baffles me that this happened at all. I know a lot of people aren't aware of the nuances of microaggressions and the lack of safety felt by marginalized groups but good lord, surely we're all aware that we shouldn't be painting Nazi symbols all over the fucking subway. Fuck.

US Anti-Black Racism Update

Things are getting worse. So much worse.

Five people were shot near Black Lives Matter protest site.

They weren't shot by police. They were shot by white supremacists. White supremacists had been showing up every night at the protests over the murder of Jamar Clark. The black protesters, despite the obvious intent to intimidate and despite the fact that these people want black people dead, never did anything to hurt them. They only herded them away from the main protest area to keep the disruption of their disrespectful presence to a minimum.

When they did that yesterday, the white supremacists open fired on them. Five people were shot, but luckily none of the wounds were life-threatening. They're all okay. However, all of the shooters escaped. If they had been black shooters, they would have been hunted down like dogs or immediately tackled and beaten to a pulp, if not killed, by police. Or the police would have just started shooting into crowds of black people. Yet somehow, all the white supremacists escaped. Apparently, one has now been arrested. I wonder how this will go?

That was sarcasm. I know how that will go.

Now for some local news.

Western Washington University cancels classes as hate speech is investigated.

That's my college. Enough shit has happened there recently to remind me that even the most "liberal" places aren't safe for people of color.

Recently, it was announced that a change to the Western mascot was being considered. The Western Vikings includes a mascot of an angry-looking white viking head. I know that vikings get a bad rap and they were really not any worse than any other (or any Christian) white empire. But it is true that they're associated with a ton of violence and rape and, of course, they were white, and so is the mascot.

There are not a lot of people of color on at Western. It's a pretty goddamn white school. It's especially lacking black people. So the people of color who are there have a hard enough time feeling welcomed without being greeted by a white face. It makes complete sense. Change the mascot. No big deal. They don't even have a football team anymore, so literally who cares? Just don't change it to the Western Ferns because that's the most boring mascot conceivable.

But, of course, some people REALLY CARE A WHOLE FUCKING LOT.

In an interview, Shepard said Western was alerted by employees who saw the threat first on the anonymous social-media phone application Yik Yak. Later, students contacted the administration as well.
He said the target was students of color, and that he decided to suspend classes because he was concerned about the safety of all students. Tuesday was to be the last day of classes before the Thanksgiving break.

At least the campus is responding properly. Some students are threatened? Protect everyone.

Shepard confirmed that some of the hate speech appears to be connected to a suggestion made by student leaders that the school’s mascot, a viking, be changed to one that is more inclusive.

People are so fucking ridiculous. They try to paint black people as violent thugs, yet all it takes is a discussion of maybe making a mascot more inclusive and here come the death threats!

The article doesn't reveal what the messages were, but the University President is taking this very seriously, saying that it's clearly not your everyday trolling. This was hate speech.

My fellow white people are so fucking pathetic.

Is that Seattle?

Highway Adopted in Honor of Leelah Alcorn

If you've forgotten, Leelah Alcorn was a transgender teen who took her own life after years of hiding and being misgendered by her parents and the usual fucker that trans people have to put up with in our shit society.

After she died, her shit parents continued to misgender her, burying her in a man's suit and using her birth name. They got her Tumblr account deleted and basically did all they could to erase the memory of who she really was.

Now, on Interstate 71 near the South Lebanon exit, you can see a sign that says "In Memory of Leelah Alcorn." Her real name is memorialized on that sign and her transmisogynistic parents can't erase that.

You can read more information and thank the community of people who made this possible on their Facebook page.

An Observation

So I decided to walk down to a coffee shop today to work since I have little other reason to leave the house and don't want to become a total cave troll. On the way I passed the local library, which is currently undergoing heavy construction on its main entrance road. As I passed the construction workers, the only two women I saw were the ones standing with the stop/slow signs. Both of these women smile at me when I passed, even the one standing on the opposite side of the road that I was walking on. She smiled past two of her male coworkers who were hard at work kind of randomly walking around or standing and looking at stuff, at me. Both smiles were incredibly warm and genuine.

The men who were "working" (the most I saw honestly was one guy kind of moving stuff around and one other measuring something with the measuring tape) all avoided eye contact with me. One glanced my way and there was a half second of awkward eye contact before he went back to measuring.

Why are men so terrible? Why are the women delegated to the most mind-numbing jobs when men don't even do their work hardly and don't seem to have any measure of basic human friendliness or kindness? Those women have to stand in one spot for god knows how many hours per day and they can still manage a warm smile at a stranger walking through their construction shit. But men??? ??????????? What's wrong with you guys?

Fear of Male Anger: A Universal Trauma

For about as long as I can remember, I've been afraid of anger coming from men. Any form of anger directed at anyone or anything makes me cringe, tense up, and start looking for exits. A man could be angry at someone else about something that has nothing to do with me, even a complete stranger cursing at an inanimate object that inconvenienced him somehow - the moment I detect anger, my fight, flight, or freeze instinct activates and the blood rushes to my limbs. Recently two male coworkers at my former workplace started arguing and I had to go hide in the walk-in freezer.

Now, I though this was a personal problem of mine that was caused by certain recurring incidents throughout my childhood (ahem), but once again, Tumblr has shown me that I am not alone.

One post made by a woman about how terrified she gets when men show any anger has gotten over 300,000 notes. If you're not familiar with Tumblr, this means that it has been liked or reblogged over 300,000 times, and that is a lot. Check out this thread of women explaining how little it takes to send them into alarm mode, interspersed with men talking about how they were, of course, unaware. But then, so was I. If you look through the notes, you can find woman after woman describing her experiences and saying that she's also afraid of male anger and/or she thought she was alone in it.

Again, a universal experience and collective trauma experienced by women, and we're all surprised about it because we're not allowed to talk about things like this. We don't dare talk about how men terrify us lest we be labeled man-hating devils.

But the truth is that so many women are afraid of male anger. And why not? Why wouldn't we be? How many of us have witnessed men lashing out at women physically in anger? How many of us have been warned about making men angry? We've all seen or heard of the consequences of male anger. We know how explosive it is and how society excuses just about everything men do in anger. We know that if men attack us in anger, we'll be blamed. Even if they kill us.

Angry men kill, bomb, shoot, beat, torture, mutilate, do every horrible thing you can think of. We see it in real life and we see it in media. Many of us have been hit or screamed at by fathers twice our size or more or abused by angry male partners. So many of us have experienced that trap where no matter what you do or say to reject a man, you know he's going to get angry. The only question is how angry and whether he'll just scream at you about how much of a bitch you are or try to hurt you physically. We try so hard to treat men gently and not get them angry, but they do anyway. They find a way, and they use that anger as an excuse to hurt us.

And they wonder why we don't trust them.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 20 is the Transgender Day of Remembrance to honor those trans people who have been killed by transphobia. More trans people have died in 2015 in the U.S. via transphobic murder than any in recent memory, the vast majority of them being black trans women. 81 trans people have been murdered this year, seemingly for no other reason then they are trans. That is nearly double compared to last year. And still, there are very few protections or even official reporting systems to track violence against trans people.

Trans women of color should not have to wait their turn to be recognized as they continue to be murdered in the street for existing. It's not enough to have visibility - in fact, increased visibility exposes them to increased violence. The violence needs to be addressed. Right now.

Trans women of color are, of course, at the forefront of the movement to get something done about this violence. has featured some amazing artwork by trans individuals to celebrate the 2015 Transgender Day of Remembrance. I particularly love this one by Micah Bazant for the Audre Lorde Project:

Calling All "Free Speech Advocates"

I looooooooooove love love love love love love love love LOVE when the utter hypocrisy and generally bullshit of so-called "freedom of speech advocates" comes screaming out to the light of day for all to see.

Pretty much any time any person (especially any cishet white dude) says something fucked up on a public forum and gets called out for it, you'll see these 1st Amendment humpers swoop in to screech and whine about how Cishet White Dude is allowed to say WHATEVER HE WANTS and tell people how fascist they are for criticizing his words. God forbid Cishet White Dude gets fired or charged with harassment or punished in any way imaginable. Then you're guaranteed to hear the howling about how the feminazis and SJWs are destroying the world and making it impossible for Cishet White Dudes to get away with saying whatever reprehensible shit that pops into their ignorant skulls.

And then this happens:

London woman charged after alleged #killallwhitemen tweet

And this happens:

CNN Sinks to New Low: Suspends Reporter for Expressing Sympathy with Refugees

Where are these free speech advocates now?

Laws regarding free speech are, of course, different in Britain than they are in the U.S. But references to killing all men have long been a joke within the feminist community, used ironically to mock ridiculous men who actually fear that we want all men dead or that feminist ideals will lead to the downfall of the male gender. And I can tell you from personal experience that rapid white cishet male Defenders of the Sacred Joke come from all corners of the globe, including all parts of the U.K. But where are they now? And how come nobody arrested any of the men who have literally threatened to kill me?

Come on, someone has literally been charged with a crime for making a joke! Where are the pitchforks? Where are the stalwart defenders of freedom???

US Anti-Black Racism Update

Okay. Deep breath. Let's do this.

My white neighbor thought I was breaking into my own apartment. Nineteen cops showed up.

There have been a lot of stories like this, but this one really takes the cake. A black woman locked herself out of her own apartment, called a locksmith to deal with it, and somehow a white person took this to mean she was breaking in and called the cops on her. Then the police sent NINETEEN OFFICERS to deal with the non-robbery.

The cops, of course, then acted like complete dickholes to Ms. Fay Wells, ignoring her when she asked them for their names and badge numbers, refusing to speak to her or even acknowledge her existence as though she had wronged them somehow. And the entire department obstructed every attempt for her to get answers.

Completely fucked. And she's totally traumatized. Assholes.

And then:

Portraits Of Every Black Professor At Harvard Law Were Covered In Black Tape

What the actual fuck. This is terrifying. This is terrorism. I would feel 100% afraid for my life if I was one of those professors.

You can't even begin to claim that racism isn't a problem in the U.S. when this is the reaction to students holding some protests to get people to actually address racism a little.

What the FUCK.

Been there.

Scientists Forced to Realize That Irrational Hatred of Fat is Ridiculous

Can we begin to finally put this to bed?

Scientists now think that being overweight can protect your health.

I think the most ridiculous thing about this article is the first five words.

Around a dozen years ago, researchers noticed that some patients with chronic conditions such as heart disease fared better than others. This should have been encouraging news, perhaps a clue to future treatments. Instead, researchers were baffled. Because the factor that seemed to be protecting these patients was fat: They were all overweight or mildly obese.

A dozen years ago. So for around 12 years, we could have been working with more accurate information about health and a ton of fat hatred could have been prevented, but that didn't happen because...?

Researchers immediately began trying to explain this “obesity paradox”—or, more often, to explain it away. Carl Lavie, a cardiologist in Jefferson, Louisiana, was one of the first clinicians to describe the paradox. It took him over a year to find a journal that would publish his findings. “People thought, ‘This can’t be true. There’s got to be something wrong with their data’,” he told Quartz.

For 12 years, researchers spent their time trying to discredit all the studies supporting the idea that being fat can be healthier than being thin. For 12 years, doctors kept refusing to treat fat people until they lost weight, dismissing their concerns and symptoms as being a result of their weight. For 12 years, people kept working on the false assumption that fat = unhealthy and thin = healthy and using that to justify their fat hatred, which fuels self-hatred in fat people and eating disorders and general self-harm through diets that never work.

Flegal found the lowest mortality rates among people in the overweight to mildly obese categories. It’s true that these groups are slightly more likely to suffer from heart disease and some other life-threatening conditions in the first place. But many factors influence the likelihood of a person getting heart disease. And a strong link between weight and disease only emerges among people with severe obesity. So taken at face value, the results seemed to be showing that a little extra weight is genuinely beneficial.

The entire article just undoes every common assumption about weight and health. I just have one addition. Even if someone is fat enough to be at risk of heart problems or whatever, still leave them the fuck alone.

I mean, I understand why everyone involved in the multi-billion dollar weight loss industry wants to crush any evidence that being fat isn't horrible in every conceivable way. But why is everyone else so invested in clinging to a narrative that is clearly untrue?

“People are furiously looking for some way to make this not the case,” says Deb Burgard, a clinical psychologist in Los Altos, California who treats eating disorders. “And I think that bears some comment. Theoretically we should be very happy to find out that people aren’t dying the way we thought they were going to, that there’s not going to be this terrible outcome. That people at higher weights are going to be OK.”

???? ???????? ???????????? Why are people ridiculous???

Leave people alone about their weight.

Amazing Woman of Color

Your guaranteed reaction to this headline:

A Macon woman was determined to take a college psychology test, despite the fact that she was in labor. On Thursday, November 12, 21-year-old Tommitrise Collins was preparing to deliver her baby at Coliseum Medical Center, but before that happened she had to take an online test.
Collins told FOX 5 News she could only take the exam on that day.

“If I’m not in too much pain, I’ll take it,” Collins told her sister, Atlanta resident Shanell Chapman. Collins said her plan was to handle as much pain as long as possible and when she took the test she was not on any medication.
"It took me 4-5 hours after the opening of the test to try to put the pain to the side and do it so I wouldn't have to do it later and I could enjoy my newborn," Collins said.

She had contractions every three minutes and she still finished a half hour early!

Even better, she wasn't satisfied with the score she got while she was crowning, so the University let her take it again, and she got a B. If it were me, I would have just curved Collins' grade to an A. Give that woman the birthing curve. SHE TOOK THE TEST WHILE IN LABOR JUST GIVE HER A DIPLOMA.

This amazing black woman has already clearly worked harder than I ever did to get a degree, just give her the diploma, she's gonna be great.

Wait, What?

NRA, Republicans block proposed law to stop suspected terrorists from buying guns in U.S.

So, they don't want to let refugees into the country because one or two might be secret terrorists. But suspected terrorists already in the country should be allowed to buy guns.

This gives me an idea for one of those zen "if a tree falls in a forest" questions. If a refugee wants to enter the U.S. to buy a gun, would a Republican let them in?

The bottom line on the refugee argument is that if you think we should refuse to take them in, you're a horrible person. You're afraid of terrorists getting in? Terrorists have a thousand ways of entering the country. Refusing refugees won't stop them, it only condemns innocent, desperate people to death. It is literally the most un-Christian thing to do. I'm not Christian anymore, but I was raised as one and it's pretty obvious what Jesus would do in this situation.

People die nearly every day in this country via mass shootings that could be stopped via gun control, but Republicans refuse to do anything about it. Yet these supposed Christians would deny safe haven to people whose homes and lives have been destroyed by ISIS because a couple of them might secretly be ISIS agents who will try to kill people?

If I could snap my fingers and have every one of these rich Republican legislators who wants to close our borders to refugees straight to Syria, I would. They kill more people every day with their horrible policies and their war on drugs and their abortion access restrictions and their attacks on essential welfare services and their anti-gun control stance and their support of killer police than any ISIS terrorist ever could. And they create more terrorists through their support of constantly attacking, exploiting, and bombing any country that isn't strong enough to defend itself.

They're all murderers and terrorists and they should be deported immediately.

Life Goals

I especially like the fact that the manservant is being forced to balance a giant tray of champagne glasses while pouring her more champagne. He can't just give her a new glass. But he'd better be ready with them anyway.

Matriarchy goals.

This is Shitty Feminism

I would say "this is not feminism" but pretending that racism and colonialism hasn't long been a substantial part of feminism and its history is refusal to accept responsibility for the problems in the movement. And ignoring shit does not tend to make it go away.

Two things. First of all, feminists in France are making things worse for French Muslims.

Feminists are failing Muslim women by supporting racist French laws

Even before the 2004 law meant scarf-wearing teenagers would be excluded from schools – thus violating their fundamental right to education – France’s established feminist groups did not accept scarf-wearing women in their meetings.
They decided early on these women could not be feminist, indeed must be against everything that feminism stands for, that the hijab was a symbol of oppression. It has taken the few of us who are opposed to this discriminatory law to start discussing whether high heels, lipstick and multiple signals of femininity might just as well be labelled symbols of oppression.

A lot of mainstream feminists and generally uneducated feminists feel the same way about women who wear head coverings for religious reasons. But holding up ancient societal racism and Islamophobia is not radical. White feminism paternalistically telling women of color that what they're wearing is not feminist enough and is oppressing them is, well, ugh. Why would anyone want to do that? So gross. Yet white feminists do it all the time.

The fact is that Muslim women are perfectly capable of analyzing their own religion and making their own decisions on how they want to follow it and deciding what they want to wear. Stop treating women like little girls. It's shitty feminism.

Then there's this:

Women Making $70 Feminist Shirts in Factory Paid Under a Dollar an Hour

God damnit.

In a new investigative report published at the Mail on Sunday, a reporter discovered that women in Mauritius who were hired to make shirts that read "This is what a feminist looks like" have been paid roughly a dollar an hour to do so and sleep in dormitories that house 16 women at a time.
The shirts, which are sold in conjunction with Fawcett Society (whose slogan is "Working for women's rights since 1886") and have been worn by everyone from Simon Pegg to Nick Clegg to British politician Harriet Harman, are made by migrant women who make a quarter of the average monthly salary in Mauritius.

Now THAT is white, Western feminism.

Adel Termos, Hero of Lebanon

You've heard plenty about the ISIS attacks in France. You may not have heard that the day before that, Beirut, Lebanon suffered a terrible terrorist attack by ISIS involving suicide bombers. 45 died and 200 more were wounded.

It could have been a lot worse if not for the ultimate sacrifice made by Adel Termos, a father of two. After the first suicide bomber went off, Adel spotted a second who was preparing to detonate his explosives. Instantly, Adel moved to tackle him to the ground, where both of them died from the explosion, but no one else.

“There are many, many families, hundreds probably, who owe their completeness to his sacrifice,” Elie Fares, a blogger and physician in Beirut, told Public Radio International in an interview last week.
“In a way, Adel Termos broke human nature of self-preservation. His heroism transcended his own life to save others,” Fares told The Washington Post in an e-mail Monday. “To make that kind of decision in a split second, to decide that you’d rather save hundreds than to go back home to your family, to decide that the collective lives of those around you are more important than your own is something that I think no one will ever understand.”

It's true. Most people in the same situation would freeze or run, overcome by the power of their survival instincts. Adel was different. He was a hero.

We in the U.S. and many other Western nations have been told that violence happens in "that part of the world" all the time, and somehow, that means that we do not need to mourn innocent deaths there the way that we should mourn the deaths in France. It's hard to fight against that social conditioning. But you can. Think about Adel Termos' family, and all those lost and grieving in Lebanon and in Iraq, and try to mourn for them. Do it for Adel.

Emotional Labor

As I mentioned yesterday, I recently quit my day job, which I actually did in the evening, that I relied on for enough income to live. It was a minimum wage pizza delivery job. Thanks to generous tips, I was able to put enough money away to quit so that I could build a full-time freelance writing career.

But this wasn't the reason I quit when I did. I would have liked to last through the holidays, in no small part because I love buying people presents, and you need money to do that. However, I couldn't make it. Because I didn't have the strength.

Emotional labor is defined as any kind of work that requires you to hide your real feelings. If you serve customers in any way, you're almost definitely required to pretend that you're happy to help them. You're expected to put on a cheerful face no matter what's going on in your life and no matter how shitty you actually feel.

Almost everyone has had to this at some point in their life, even if they're never had to for work. You might have to pretend to like a significant other's relatives, or not freak out at the police officer who pulled you over. It's unpleasant and exhausting after a while. For many people, this is a part of their everyday life, especially since many people in jobs that require emotional labor have to hold more than one job to survive, at least in the U.S. And emotional labor is not valued by our society, therefore it is not compensated with better pay.

The horrific thing about emotional labor is that you basically have to put on a fake personality. You have to act like someone you're not, sometimes for hours in a day, in order to keep your job. You have to twist yourself into a company-approved person.

Part of the reason I chose pizza delivery as my day job was the limited amount of time I had to spend being seen by customers. Most of the time I'm in my car, by myself, free to yell at bad drivers or even just scream cusses at the top of my lungs for no reason (hey, sometimes it helps). However, delivery driving is not the easiest job. You're constantly working on a deadline. It's not the end of the world if you don't get to the customer's home at the time they were told their pizza would be delivered, but if it's going to be more than 10 minutes late, you're expected to call them. Which is kind of messed up because you can't just whip out your phone while driving and call (that's against company policy and also illegal in Washington State). But if you pull over and call, then obviously the pizza will be even later.

Plus you're driving around with the knowledge that late pizzas can mean a lesser tip. And, of course, the minimum wage in my area is not a living wage (I live and work outside of Seattle), so tips were essential for survival. At the same time, there was almost no predicting what kind of a tip you would get. You could try to act super cheerful, be on time, say all the right things, crack a joke, wear extra eyeliner, etc. But the majority of your pay is essentially at the whim of the customer. That's rough.

And there's more. Did you know that delivery driving is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, often listed above being a police officer? And I'm not talking about delivering to the creepy, run-down shacks way back in the trees at night where no one could hear you scream, but driving in itself is dangerous. I'm a good driver (thank you video games) but other people are not. Traffic and weather conditions add extra stress, especially when houses are not well-lit and you're trying to figure out which is the right one to bring the pizza to.

So basically, I've worked busy Fridays in winter when it's dark by 5 pm and it's rainy all evening, sitting through rush hour traffic while the time ticks by, then driven up ridiculous hills with narrow roads or down long gravel driveways, squinting at every house to try and spot the house number (which is sometimes in the most random places or not on the actual house at all), then maybe stopping and getting out to trudge around in the puddles while getting rained on to try and find the number or walking up steep, narrow driveways I do not want to back down, concentrating on not slipping on wet gravel. Or trying to navigate apartment complexes that make no sense in terms of the order of the building letters and that are not marked well to then hike up and down stairs, trying to find the right apartment number (oh great, odd numbers appear to be on the other end of the building for some reason!).

And after all of this, I have to greet the customer with a smile and a cheery voice, no matter how frustrated, miserable, and wet I actually am.

You try it for 10 months.

And as much as I tried to enjoy and appreciate the job, as much as I wanted to (because life would be a lot simpler that way), after a while, I started to get depressed on the job. And I mean really, really depressed. I would feel so tired for seemingly no reason, and then I would begin to spiral, feeling shitty because I felt that I couldn't handle what society has told me is an easy job, and the shittier I felt, the harder the emotional labor was on me. Eventually, I knew I needed to get out for the sake of my health. I had no more emotional strength left in me.

It didn't help that the more exhausted I got, the more I realized that even a local pizza chain that claimed to value the safety of its drivers above everything didn't really care about me as a human being. This particular chain, let's call it Bagliacci Pizza, has three stores outside of Seattle. All employees in the Seattle stores are getting a raise and have already gotten raises in accordance with the new minimum wage law that is gradually raising to $15 per hour. Those of us outside of Seattle? Nothing. No raise. At all.

And when in eight months of working there, I got five "complaints" for things like not catching a mistake on the pizza that a cook made or bringing someone a 6-pack of Coke instead of a 2-liter bottle (the 6-pack is more expensive anyway), they punished me by withdrawing the about $1-per-delivery allowance for gas, oil, and maintenance on my car for two weeks. I essentially got my pay cut. For five mistakes. That felt good.

So after 10 months of being treated like a cog in the machine, braving the roads and the rain (so much rain oh my god) and the bad drivers and the aptly-named Goat Hill, all with a smile on my face at the end, I felt like I had reached the very end of my rope. But again, I felt like I shouldn't have. I felt like I should have so much more rope. Isn't a minimum wage job supposed to be easy?

Bagliacci Pizza relies on workers who risk their lives to fill their customers' demand and who have to perform emotional labor upon every delivery, and they don't value that at all. I'm sure they'd pay those workers less if it wasn't illegal. So many companies put no value on this very draining labor that they expect of every employee automatically, like it's nothing. You're just expected to shut down your real emotions and personality and be a customer service robot with a painted smile and unlimited patience. Yet I bet if the CEOs of those companies were paid $9 an hour to put on a fake smile for customers who often treat them with contempt, they wouldn't make it 10 days.

There have been studies done on emotional labor and its exhausting effects, and I plan to read and talk about those studies if I can do so without paying for them. I want everyone to know about emotional labor and how hard it is to perform on top of everything else minimum wage workers are expected to do for a non-livable wage. Don't fucking tell them to work harder for better pay. If you've ever had those words come out of your mouth, then you've clearly never had to work as hard as they have. I am in awe of the people who work those jobs for years, but I know so many of them do out of necessity, because they don't have the privilege that I do.

I will work hard at my writing, and hopefully my words will help to inspire others to appreciate the word my now-ex-coworkers do and convince everyone that they deserve so much better. So much better than Bagliacci is giving them. You hear me, Bagliacci?

This is Not Okay

When attacks like the ones in France happen, that is, attacks on a white-dominated, Western country happen, I have the following though process:

  1. Oh fuck that's terrible.
  2. Oh fuck here comes the Islamophobia.

And I'm not even Muslim.

One of the many terrible things about Islamophobia (in addition to the fact that Islamophobia accomplishes exactly what ISIS wants) is that it's so ignorant that it spreads to people who are not Muslim.

I think I've mentioned one Veerender Jubbal before. He's a Sikh man who is somewhat Internet famous for being the sweetest, cutest anti-GamerGate Twitter person ever. He speaks out against GamerGate and general online harassment and gets harassed in turn for being Sikh.

In what is not the grossest thing they've ever done but still pretty fucked up, they altered a photo of him holding an iPad to make it look like he's holding the Qur'an and wearing a suicide bomber vest.

It's a terrible Photoshop job, but enough to be picked up by a couple small news outlets reporting on the recent attacks in France. They literally published the photo on the left as though the man apparently taking a mirror selfie with a Qur'an in a Sikh turban is a member of ISIS who was involved in the attack.

Mr. Jubbal, of course, complained about this, and at least some of the news outlets apologized. My favorite GamerGate response to the portrayal of the most peaceful person ever as a KILLER ISIS TERRORIST is this:

This actually proves one of my main points about GamerGate and their "ethics in gaming journalism" bullshit. Because that's what they pretend that GamerGate is about.

This clusterfuck wherein a completely peaceful Sikh man famous for saying "gosh" like the adorable puppy he is was portrayed as an ISIS terrorist by news organizations who didn't take the time to determine where the altered photo came from or notice that it was clearly Photoshopped is an example of a REAL issue of ethics in journalism. But instead of that, you're getting all up in arms over video game news sites maybe giving better reviews to video games than they deserve so that you spend some money on something you didn't like as much as you thought you would.

And then they tell feminists that we're not fighting against the REAL ISSUES (TM).

Gif of the Day

Have I posted this already? Meh, who cares, it's amazing enough for a second go around.

Spot the Difference

Apparently, it's a felony to taunt a police dog. It's not a felony to scream about how everybody should kill black people. This is the actual world we're living in right now.

Male Tears Time, Eh?

Predictably, the men of Canada are crying hard over actual panda bear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau creating real parity in his cabinet. 50% of his cabinet are women, and the men are weeping, "what about the merit!"

"But what about merit?” they asked in sombre tones and rhetorically alarmist column headlines all across the country. “What if we’re choosing gender over competence?” they wondered, deep worry lines forming on their foreheads. There is something astonishing and yet completely predictable about a group of people so unaware of their own privilege suddenly questioning the merit of a 50/50 cabinet, when it never occurred to them to do so when it was once comprised of 80 per cent men.

Literally what they're saying is that Trudeau must have chosen these women because of their gender, not because they're competent. That there cannot possibly be enough women in Canada who are competent enough for the job. His desire to have a cabinet that actually represents the human population of Canada is going to hurt the country because surely women couldn't handle the job as well as a bunch of men could.

That is pure misogyny. And it happens every time actual parity is achieved, come close to, or even discussed. Because there are so many people in the world who truly believe that men are better than women. At politics, at business, and every job that our society values.

This is what I mean when I talk about living in a patriarchy. And why I can hardly respond with anything but scorn and sarcasm when people try to tell me we don't.

"What Rape Culture?"

Gee, I wonder why women don't feel comfortable reporting sexual assault to the police?

University Police Chief: Most Campus Rapes Are Women With 'A Guilt Complex'

Yeah. He said that to a campus newspaper reporter.

His full comments:

Most of these sexual assaults are women waking up the next morning with a guilt complex. That ain’t rape, that’s being stupid. When the dust settles, it was all consensual. It doesn’t happen here. It doesn’t show up here. They’re about as much a rape as a goat roping.

"It doesn't happen here. It doesn't show up here. Maybe if I just keep saying it over and over and pretending every rape case is a false accusation and that women are just lying whores I CAN MAKE IT TRUE."

Said the campus police man.

This guy was put on unpaid suspension for these comments. For how long? We don't know. Oh wait, he's already back on the job. Haha. Oh but he's taking "sexual assault sensitivity training." I'm sure that will help. Yeah, go ahead and let Mr. Rape Doesn't Happen Women Are Just Stupid Whores go back to his job on a college campus where one in four women will endure sexual assault and he'll inevitably have to deal with reports of sexual assault. Good plan.

Nobody cares. Nobody cares about rape victims.

Judge Scott Johansen Hates Babies

Spread the word. Scott Johansen, official Baby Hater.

Utah Judge Takes Foster Child Away From Lesbian Parents Because Lesbian Parents

Obviously this piece of moldy cheese hates lesbians as well, but if you hate them so much that you're willing to screw over a baby, I'm going to label you a hater of babies.

In Utah, a juvenile court judge, Scott Johansen, has ordered that a baby girl being foster parented by a lesbian couple be taken away from them within the week for no other reason than their sexual orientation. Johansen has claimed that his decision was based on research that claims different-sex parents have kids with better outcomes than same-sex ones, but the couple — April Hoagland and Beckie Peirce — say that his decision had a religious motive. Johansen reportedly refused to produce any of the research that he claims to be citing.

Actually, research suggests the opposite, Scott. But what do you care? As long as you can make lesbians and babies suffer, right?

What happened to the baby? Did they actually have a straight couple lined up for her? Even if they did, is the baby at an age that she won't suffer from separation anxiety and be generally traumatized by losing her parents?

This story is exploding. Let's all add fuel to this fire as much as we can, for the sake of the FUCKING BABY. Because, you know, most of us are not baby haters.

America Ignores Trial of Cop Who Raped At Least 13 Women

I saw this headline yesterday on Facebook:

The Rape Trial Everyone in America Should Be Watching

And it came with the subheader:

Thirteen women came forward to accuse former police officer Daniel Holtzclaw of misconduct. Why aren't more people outraged?

I have a feeling that a white editor slapped that on. But it gives me the chance to use this perfect gif:

I can totally hear him saying that, drawing out each word slightly. You know why.

Because the victims are poor black women and sex workers. Poor black women caught with drug paraphernalia who were coerced into performing sex acts in exchange for not being arrested and possibly killed, and if they survived then thrown into jail for god know's how long because they had a pipe on them or something.

This man is an "alleged" serial rapist who used his power as a police officer to target and rape poor black women, and no one cares because no one cares about poor black women. If one victim had been a middle class white woman, the news media would be all over this trial.

The article I linked to, written by a black woman named Treva Lindsey, explains better than I ever could (because I'm a white woman) how the intersection of racism and sexism makes black women especially vulnerable to exploitation and apathy from the rest of the population. Add in the fact that they were poor, possibly addicted to drugs, and possibly involved in sex work, and you pretty much guarantee that the majority of the U.S. population will decide that they deserved whatever was coming to them. And the rapist's attorney is doing everything he can to exploit that fact.

During opening statements at the trial, Holtzclaw's defense attorney deployed words such as "street smart" to discredit the accusers to the all-white jury. His reference to "street smarts," vague but derisive, attempted to reinforce the idea that the accusers were involved in criminal activities associated with the "streets," such as sex work and drug usage.

Basically, he's exploiting the pervasive attitude that black women can't be raped and that poor drug users and sex workers deserve anything that happens to them. Just like the rapist exploited that attitude to exploit those 13 black women.

Action is finally being taken to help black men who are harassed, assaulted, and killed by cops and white women who are sexually assaulted. But we still can't manage to get up the same sympathy for people who are both black AND women. Meanwhile, Holtzclaw is being tried by an all-white jury. That should end well.

How long. How many victims.

Wait, What?

Missouri state senator aims to block student's dissertation on abortion.

What? Block a dissertation? How does that even work? Can you do that? What does that even mean? SO MANY QUESTIONS.

State Sen. Kurt Schaefer, a Republican from Columbia, Missouri, who chairs the Missouri state senate’s interim Committee on the Sanctity of Life, sent a letter in late October to the University of Missouri calling Ruhr’s dissertation “a marketing aid for Planned Parenthood — one that is funded, in part or in whole, by taxpayer dollars,” according to a copy of the letter posted to Schaefer called for the university to hand over documents regarding the project's approval and said that, because the University of Missouri is a public university, it should not fund research that he said would promote elective abortions. Missouri law prohibits the use of public funds to promote non-life-saving abortions.

Now I'm no PhD, but I thought that dissertations were something that PhD candidates needed to write in order to get their doctorate. So this politician is attempting to interfere with a woman's education because she's researching the effects of your state's shitty 72-hour waiting period policy?

“I stand by my research project,” Lindsay Ruhr said Wednesday. “I feel that my research is objective, and that the whole point of my research is to understand how this policy affects women. Whether this policy is having a harmful or beneficial effect, we don’t know.”

If Kurt thinks this study is a "marketing air for Planned Parenthood," he must be reeeeeaaaaal confident that the results of the study will show that the waiting period does nothing but harm women.

Another funny thing is that this is the University of Missouri, the same University that is letting white supremacists threaten and terrorize black students, who are doing so because black students protested shitty actions and non-action from the University that made the campus unsafe for them. This includes kicking out University healthcare providers who were in any way associated with Planned Parenthood. And yet:

Anti-abortion website, in an article posted Tuesday, praised Schaefer for the letter objecting to Ruhr’s research, saying he had uncovered “fresh evidence of collaboration between the University of Missouri and the state’s leading abortion provider.”

Ok then.

What's next? No accurate sex education for med students because the University receives tax dollars and how dare they promote the pro-sexy time agenda with public funds? No government grants for anything that could possibly prove Republican bullshit wrong? Fuck off, Kurt. I can't believe the University is even kind of going along with this.

Oh wait, yes I can.

In light of what's happening at Mizzou right now, please read this amazing piece by Roxane Gay about student activism and racism on college campuses. It's incredibly moving and important.

Student Activism Is Serious Business

It seems that when it comes to racism, people of color are expected to endure without complaint. We are expected to be grateful for opportunities, like a college education, while ignoring racial aggressions both great and small. We are supposed to be noble in the face of staggering humiliations. As a student, I was expected to show my ID every single time it was demanded of me and I was expected to pretend it did not hurt. As a faculty member, I am expected to show my campus ID every time it is demanded of me. I may be expected to pretend it doesn’t hurt, but now I refuse to participate in the charade.

I'm so angry that such a brilliant woman who is so deserving of her degree and her position as a professor has to put up with this continuing racism that has plagued her for decades. She and all black people deserve so much better.

Black students put their lives on the line in the 60's for activism, and they have to do the same today. I will never know that experience. They are so amazing.

White Supremacists Literally Terrorizing Black Mizzou Students

This shit is terrifying. Black students of the University of Missouri have been tweeting about being terrorized by white men in trucks circling them, screaming racial slurs and "white power," and threatening to kill them. Last night, they were actually fleeing the campus, hiding out at friends' houses.

You can see the tweets and a Yik Yak message saying "I'm going to stand my ground tomorrow and shoot every black person I see" on a student's Tumblr page.

This is all because black students successfully got the University president to resign for doing nothing when said students were repeatedly made to feel unsafe by racist white students. Now that he's left, these white supremacists are making absolutely sure that they feel unsafe, and the University is DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT.

Other posts on Yik Yak just say "Don't come to campus tomorrow." These are the kinds of things that have literally been said before mass shootings. These students are in serious danger. If a black or Muslim student said something like that, the entire campus would be shut down and the National Guard called in. I suggested that they bring in the National Guard on Twitter and then took it back a minute later because the National Guard would be more likely to shoot the protesting black students than protect them from racists.

These black students are completely fucked. They have no one they can trust. How can we sit by and allow a culture that forces them to endure a constant state of fear while they're just trying to get an education?

And that's not all. The KKK have been spotted near the campus. A threatening call was made to the Black Culture center while a black student group was having a meeting.

You can read about all this and more on U.S. Uncut.

And how is the University responding to all of this?

Absolutely unacceptable. Black students are fleeing your campus, MU. Your campus has turned into a scene from the 1960's and earlier. But apparently, you're willing to let people die before you do anything. And even then, you probably won't do much to actually protect your black students. You're fucking disgusting and clearly don't care about their lives.

You can tweet @Mizzou and follow the currently trending #BlackOnCampus hashtag if you want to get involved. And if you're the type to do so, pray.

Gif of the Day

That last post was super heavy, so now this:

Birds, especially parrots, actually need a ton of attention so I probably should never get one but I admit to really, really wanting one. Precious adorable dancing ridiculous babies.

You Can't Deny Rape Culture

Yes, in the year of our lord Jesus fuckface Christ 2015, I still deal with people trying to tell me that rape culture doesn't exist, or that it doesn't exist in the "Western world" and only in places like India and South Africa. You know, places not dominated by white people. Those OTHER counties full of people of color. No racism here, no sir.

Anyway, what these people do is essentially try to redefine rape culture in a way that suits them. They claim that rape culture can't possibly exist in a country where people generally, outwardly view rape as a bad thing. As though rape culture is defined as a culture where rape is explicitly accepted. As though rape culture = "rape is good," said everyone. And the U.S. = "rape is bad," says everyone.

That is the definition of a false dichotomy. Black and white thinking applied to a subject right before they turn around and say that it's hard to convict rapists because it's not a black and white crime, aka "blurred lines," etc. But if you've even tried to read up on feminist examinations of rape culture, a term created to describe a complex situation already in existence, you know that it's a whole lot more complicated and involved.

Just because we may all act like it’s horrible at face value doesn’t mean it’s not rape culture. You can go “rape is bad” and then go “oh but if you dress a certain way you asked for it and if you were drinking you deserved it and if you’re a man you can’t be raped and if you don’t follow this specific formula of how every rape victim should act then you’re lying and if 30+ women accuse a famous man of rape then they just all must want money and the women and girls in these high profile rape cases probably just wanted attention even though they were ostracized and harassed and had their entire lives ruined and killed themselves after” etc. etc. etc. until the end of time.

They're pushing a false, nearly impossible to achieve definition of rape culture which is apparently everyone going “rape is cool” (which we actually do have plenty of people like that in the U.S., see fraternities and college campus chants), but that is not what rape culture means.

Rape culture is people making excuses for and defending rapists, even if they’re convicted, even if the assault was filmed and passed around social media, even if they admitted it. Rape culture is mainstream news media lamenting about how rape charges are going to ruin the rapists’ lives after they were convicted. Rape culture is convicted rapists going on to appear on TV shows and being let right back onto football teams after getting out of jail. Rape culture is the vast majority of teenage boys using the word “rape” to describe beating someone in a video game. Rape culture is 1 in 3 men saying they would rape if they could get away with it when you don’t explicitly use the word “rape.” Rape culture is women getting inundated with rape threats for criticizing video games. Rape culture is men saying that fat women can’t be raped because no one would ever want to have sex with them, and that black women can’t be raped because they always want it. Rape culture is 90% of disabled women enduring sexual abuse at some point in their lives and no one giving a fuck because caring for them must be so hard on their abusive caretakers. And on. And on. And on.

There are so many examples and so many specific examples within those examples. And the fact that people are trying to distort rape culture in order to try and prove it doesn't exist only supports the idea of rape culture, because that is an attempt to stop discussion which is necessary to put a stop to rape. And people who say we can't stop all rape because "there will always be bad people" are evidence of rape culture, because that kind of casual dismissal with such a poor excuse to do nothing, I mean, are you kidding me?

If you think there's not a rape culture in the U.S., then you're working with the wrong definition of rape culture, or, more likely, you're trying to manipulate the definition for your own purposes. And that's fucked up.

Don't fucking tell me what rape culture is. I live in it.

Women Own All of Your Favorite Media, Forever

All these studies are coming out that are proving that media belongs to women. Video games, movies, everything.

After adult women became the largest gaming demographic overall, dudebros tried to claim that it was mostly women playing Farmville (is that even a thing anymore) and mobile games. And theeeeeeeeeen:

Turns Out More Women Than Men Own Gaming Consoles

I love this tweet:

Researchers find that female PC gamers outnumber males.

And now they've found that movies about women make more money than movies about men. By over $45 million. And women still only make up about 30% of speaking characters in movies. How do you fail that hard, men?

Oh, and I recently found out that the original model for Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series was female.

Which makes all the man-whining about the N7 Day video put out by the Mass Effect team and how it's voiced over by the real Shepard (as opposed to man Shep) hilarious.

Hey, fake geek boys. Shepard is and always was a woman. Video games belong to women. Deal with it.

I love the article description from the Conservative Tribune. "Horrifying."

White people practicing open carry? Practicing their rights! How dare police harass them! Poor oppressed gun lovers!

Flawless Anti-Racism Victory

This is something I should have written about a long time ago but I somehow missed most of what was going on. And by "somehow," I mean "because of racism."

The University of Missouri has been under fire for a while for constantly ignoring issues that affect their more vulnerable students, especially the black ones. Racial slurs thrown at black students, including the student body president, the University removing a Planned Parenthood physician and other affiliated people from the campus, cutting benefits for graduate assistants without warning - and during all of this (plus the shooting of Mike Brown), the University president has remained silent and done nothing.

After someone drew a swastika in poop on a University bathroom wall and nothing was done, student Jonathan Butler started a hunger strike and massive protests began, calling for the University president to resign for his inaction.

It took the football team refusing to play, but he finally resigned with a whiny speech.

The best part:

His statement also was tinted with a hint of frustration. “This is not, I repeat not, the way change should come about,” Wolfe said at Old Alumni Center on campus, in an appearance that was nationally televised. “Change should come about from listening, learning, caring and conversation.”

The students were protesting specifically because you failed to listen, learn, care, and converse. Then they gave up trying to talk to you because it didn't work and instead worked to get you to resign so that maybe they could get a president who would listen and talk to them, and now you're whining because they didn't talk to you about it?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck you.

The moral of the story is that solidarity and protests work, and entitled whiny white rich guys sucks and should be fired from everything. Way to go, University of Missouri students. Especially the black students.

Flawless Feminist Victory

After appearing before the UN with Anita, Zoe Quinn is finding even more success and recognition with a memoir to be published next September and has given the rights for the MOVIE to Pascal Pictures.

This is the ultimate confirmation of the manifestation of GamerGate's self-fulfilling prophecy. They harass women, then when said women get media attention, they claim that the woman only did the thing she's getting harassed about and/or only complained about the harassment for the media attention. This claim fuels more harassment until the woman gets a movie deal. Thanks?

Boing Boing put it best:

The irony is rich and delicious. A favorite claim of Gamergate is that the people they have targetted for nonstop rape and death threats had deliberately set out to be terrorized because of the riches they'd receive. This asinine claim and the inexcusable behavior it inspired has actually made the absurd prophecy come true: by behaving in such a terrible way, Gamergate has made celebrities out of its targets, building them a mainstream platform from which to tell their stories, while Gamergate continues to fester in obscurity in the Internet's dankest sewers.

And as Dr. Cox would say, "This is so very delicious and filling I don’t think I’m going to be able to eat the rest of the evening. In fact, I honestly don’t think I can have one more bite of your painful humiliation. I find I’m just a little stuffed."

Zoe Quinn will take her enormous personal success to go, though.

If you're white like I am, you may have had multiple experiences where you hear an artist on the radio or whatever for the first time and you assume they're black because of the way they sound. If you're like me, you may get excited because you like the song and radio stations that don't exclusively play R&B, rap, pop, and/or hip hop music are finally featuring black artists. My shitty alternative rock station is playing something that sounds like a black woman singing soul music? Fantastic!

And then you find out that it's actually a white artist. It's a goofy looking dude called Macklemore. Or a white woman called Adele. Yes, I thought both of those artists were black the first time I heard them. Then I was disappointed and had to reflect on my own racism. Imagine how bad black people must feel seeing white people get super famous for performing the kind of music they can't seem to make money for or are ridiculed and looked down upon for enjoying.

For example:

Why Adele Outsells All Of Your Favorite Black Soul Singers

Adele just broke records for digital downloads with her new hit song "Hello." I can't help but enjoy her "Rolling in the Deep," the song that made me think she was a black woman (because it sounds exactly like soul music), and it made me wonder why the hell black women singing songs a lot like this and often better than this can't end up on the radio or at the top of those charts they're always talking about.

Of course, it's because of racism.

Stories of kidnapped voices branded with White names were common in the popular artists of the 60s, as chronicled in the Oscar-winning documentary, 20 Feet From Stardom. Darlene Love‘s voice was recorded and repurposed under Phil Spector’s direction as The Crystals.
Similarly, there are countless other stories of Black background singers who have been used to bolster the grit of popular music. David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Joe Crocker all employ Black backup singers to bring edge and heart to rock music.

That this is happening with soul music is especially heartbreaking, considering its history. It came directly out of the horrors of U.S. chattel slavery. Now a white woman is making a shit load of money off of it. Gross.

Let's all commit ourselves to listening to more black artists, including Janelle Monae. She's better than Adele, trust me.
