Gif of the Day

In honor of Halloween tomorrow, here's this terrifying thing:

American Horror Story: Old Navy

Morning Announcements

Ugh, WORK. So, the only reason I'm up this early is because I couldn't sleep because I've been stressing about applying for an incredible writing fellowship that I super duper want, and so I couldn't sleep, so I got up to just get it done. There are multiple topics you can apply for so I chose two but you need to submit separate applications with different cover letters and writing samples for each, of course. So. Ugh.

Anyway, I'm done writing both, I just need to sleep on it so I can proofread and submit, but mostly I need some more sleep so don't count on any content today. I'm making a bit of breakfast and then going back to bed so that I can have some energy for my day/night job, which is going to be ridiculous because Friday + Halloween tomorrow.

Oh but first, happy Halloween tomorrow!

Gif of the Day

This is a perfect metaphor for me trying to keep up with my friends in life.

Ask Her More

You've probably encountered the #AskHerMore hashtag documenting all the times that women have to deal with inane, misogynistic questions about their appearance instead of getting the good questions that their male counterparts get. Most of the time, it's about female movie stars getting asked how they lost weight for a role or what they think about their outfits blah blah blah jibber jabber jibber jabber clang clang clang. Meanwhile their male costars get asked how they mentally prepared for a role or what it was like to work with a famous director and whatever else they ask movie stars, I don't really read or watch these interviews ever.

But it's not limited to celebrities. For the first time ever, an all-female team of astronauts who are going to live together on the International Space Station. Instead of asking them important questions like "what is the experiment about and how will it get us closer to ditching this shit planet and meeting some aliens," these space women got asked about how much they'll miss makeup and what they'll do what their hair and how they'll live without men.

It's an eight-day experiment, by the way.

And this is a Russian team, and Russia, in spite of other horrific human rights abuses, has actually been better than the U.S. in terms of women in STEM fields. So this is disappointing, to say the least. Maybe ask them why the entire team is white. Don't tell me there are no women of color in Russia.

So This Happened

I just want to tell this story because it's such a good representation of United States politics.

I was out working my day/night job as a delivery driver in Kirkland, and at a busy stoplight, there was a group of what looked like middle school children with "Yes On Prop 1" signs. The current proposition 1 in the city of Kirkland is to build an aquatics and recreation center for the community where people can swim and exercise and do activities and hold classes and even get mental health care - all good community stuff to keep the kids occupied and away from drugs and educate people, etc. So these cute kids, boys and girls of all different races, were out in the drizzle jumping up and down, doing the wave with their signs, and I thought "how great, kids participating in the growth of their community."

And it's not like Kirkland can't afford it. Kirkland is a nice area right next to Lake Washington with plenty of rich and upper middle class residents. I've delivered to some ridiculous homes there.

Then, later on that same day, I see on a different, less busy corner, a group of three probably 50- or 60-something white guys holding up "No On Prop 1" signs. It was so sad and gross. They're probably all conservative, well-off or at least comfortable assholes who would never use a community center because they don't want to risk being exposed to those poorsies.

They might as well have been holding up signs that said "Fuck the Children."

The whole argument against building this community center is that it will cost money. Yes. Doing things for the community costs money. Holy shit. What a concept.

There's this weird hysteria around any money spending in this country, like, you realize that is what a government is supposed to do, right? Any government is constantly spending money to build and maintain roads and fund services, and as the community grows and you get more tax dollars, you spend money to create things that promote community health. Hoarding money like some rich weirdo only makes communities stagnate. It's simple.

I don't even know with this place anymore.

US Anti-Black Racism Update

[TRIGGER WARNING: POLICE BRUTALITY, ASSAULT OF A MINOR, TERRORISM, TRAUMA, CHOKING]

This latest incident proves once and for all that black people in the U.S. don't need to do anything to provoke my fellow white people to violence. I'm talking about the 15-year-old girl who was sitting in class and got thrown from her seat and violently dragged and restrained by a white school security guard.

The video is disturbing and I'm not going to put it here because black individuals have explicitly requested that videos like this not be spread around all willy-nilly, especially if they auto-play, because it's triggering for them to have to see their own (and their CHILDREN) attacked and brutalized by white people over and over.

The following is a graphic description of the video:

There are actually two videos going around right now - a short version and a long-form version that shows everything leading up to the incident and more after. In the long-form version, you can see how a student is trying to covertly film the security officer approaching the seat of a black girl who is sitting unmoving in her seat, slouched over and staring at the front of the class. She is not belligerent at all and does not appear to speak or even acknowledge the approach of the officer. Maybe that's what enraged the asshole. But belligerent or disrespectful or not, no child should ever be handled in this manner, ever.

The most the student does is move her arm and look at the officer when he touches her. Then, suddenly, he yanks on her arm hard enough to move her desk, then gets behind her and puts her in a stranglehold, wrapping his adult arm around her 15-year-old throat. He then literally reaches down to grab her legs or the bottom of her seat and THROWS her backward, violently, seat and all. You can see the girl flail in panic as she begins to fall and then hear the loud impact of the desk on the floor.

The officer then violently drags her away from the desk, taking the desk part of the way with her. He drags her by the leg so forcefully that she slides across the floor toward the front of the classroom. The video is then obscured by other desks as he restrains her on the floor.

During this incident, you can see how the other black students are cringing and shrinking down in their desks, afraid to do anything. On has his hand partially covering his face. They're probably already traumatized by shit like this and know they'll get the same or worse if they try to stop what's happening.

Everything about this video is heartbreaking and I feel a little sick from watching it over and over to get down every detail. I can't imagine how black people must feeling seeing shit like this constantly in real life.

The girl who was brutalized did nothing to deserve it. Her fellow students say she was not being disruptive and that she's a quiet person. Apparently, her crime was chewing gum and not leaving the classroom for that. And I've already seen my fellow white people say that she deserved it.

This combined with the visible fear of her classmates and the fact that her teacher did nothing makes me feel sick to my soul. These kids, and all black people in the U.S., have been terrorized by white people and police so bad. The officer in the video, Ben Fields, has a violent history, but the school hired him anyway. The school has banned him from any of their campuses, but that does little good now.

If you want to see the video, I recommend Color of Change for the short version (which comes with a petition to get Fields fired as a police officer), and the long version can be found on the National Association Against Police Brutality Facebook page.

This has to stop. Demand that it stops. Don't let anyone forget for a second that this is happening and that it has to stop.

Justin Trudeau: The Prime Minister Canada Deserves

Wow! Yesterday, I mentioned the new Canadian Prime Minister calling himself a feminist and pointing out that GamerGate is shit, but he's done a crap load of other awesome things in his first few days as ruler of Canada.

The best of it being that he's reversed Harper's "meh, who cares" policy on all the missing indigenous women and girls of Canada and has launched an official nation-wide search for them. In his first four days! That panda is busy!

He's also "notified Obama that Canada will be pulling out of the bombing campaign in the middle east." Holy fuck! He's already standing up to the war-happy assholes of my government and sparing who knows how many women and girls death, injury, and sudden homelessness via random fucking bombs that mostly hit civilians!

Can Justin Trudeau be Prime Minister of the U.S., too? Or at least give some friendly advice and support to Bernie.

Information and quote pulled from someone who may or may not be Jesse Williams on the Internet.

"Playing Like A Girl Means You're a Badass"

Remix this with a Beyonce song and use your drones to broadcast it over the entire U.S. population instead of bombing people, thanks.

President Don't Give a Fuck Anymore right here.

Another Trans Women of Color Murdered for Existing

[TRIGGER WARNING: MUTILATION, GUN VIOLENCE, MURDER, TRANSMISOGYNY]

Zella Ziona was apparently too embarrassing to someone who was supposed to be her friend to live. The young woman was shot multiple times by a cis man because she started "acting flamboyantly."

Investigators believe that LeBlond and Ziona were having an argument as a result of their friendship becoming public. Sadly, the dispute went beyond words with LeBlond shooting Ziona multiple times in the head and groin.
Police are now considering hate crime charges in her death in addition to the first degree murder charge LeBlond is facing.

He shot her in the groin after she embarrassed him because he's a fucking transmisogynistic piece of shit who didn't deserve her friendship. That's a hate crime. He was so repulsed by her trans-ness that he tried to destroy her genitals.

This is exactly where transmisogyny leads. This is why caricatures of trans women acting all "flamboyant" and aggressive in media is deadly. How many trans women of color is that this year alone? Yet average people and TWERFs alike go on pretending that it's no big deal. Fuck all of you. You're the reason Zella Ziona is dead.

Rest in Power, Zella.

Who's responsible for this.

Intersex Awareness Day!

Today is officially Intersex Awareness Day! If you're not aware, "intersex" is a term that refers to people who were born with "sex chromosomes," genitalia, and/or internal reproductive organs that differ from the majority of the human population. They face a ton of stigma and doctors very often encourage parents to agree to "corrective surgery" so that the child can be "normal." This can lead to serious gender dysphoria as intersex children are often assigned the incorrect gender.

Do NOT use the term "hermaphrodite" to refer to humans. Ever.

Being intersex is actually very common. It's much more than having both a vagina and a penis. If more people understood this, then more people would understand that gender/sex is not a binary and is wayyyy more complex than male/female. It's a spectrum. Intersex people can help us cis people understand this, if we decide to shut up and listen.

MTV, which has become surprisingly awesome, did a great piece on individuals who found out they were intersex as teens. They're now intersex awareness activists and kicking ass at life, getting people to understand that performing unnecessary surgeries on newborn babies to force them into an imaginary binary is doing a lot of harm and pretty much no good.

If you want to learn more about intersex people, Inter/Act Youth is a great website to read about more of the basics and hear more stories. If you want to participate in Intersex Awareness Day, there's a Thunderclap thing going on today that you can still sign up for to automatically broadcast your support on social media. I'm signed up, are YOU???????

GamerGate vs. Social Justice Prime Minister

If  you're from the U.S. like I am and the mainstream media only cares about other countries insofar as how they're being EVIL TERRORISTS AHHHHHHHH then you might not be aware that Canada had an election that the Canadians were very concerned about because their last Prime Minister was a nightmare who literally said he didn't care about the indigenous population and took away the right to vote from anyone who wasn't born in Canada.

Happily, the new Prime Minister is a super progressive awesome dude who declared himself a feminist.

Even better, newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named GamerGate as something "we need to stand clearly against."

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Good King Cole is already ready to summon the troops.

PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER 1:

I can't wait to see how this goes down. Please send death threats to Prime Minister Panda so I can read about you being arrested by very polite government security officials or whatever the Canadian equivalent of the FBI is.

Featured Blog: The Establishment

Hiiii I slept in way too late again, haaaahahahaha ugh.

So instead of reading my blog, check out The Establishment! It's actually a huge understatement to call this a blog. It's a new multimedia website and it's entirely run and funded by women. The writers include women of color, trans women, lesbian, bisexual, qu**r and pansexual women, and female sex workers.

It's amazing. So much incredible content. Our cups runneth over. Yay.

And Ijeoma Oluo is a regular columnist! Eeeee!

"I'm ready for my belly rub now."

Actual Good Halloween Costumes

The super cool Rad American Women A-Z people who I am totally friends with now because I wrote about them, etc., made a blog post showing kids in costumes inspired by rad American women from their book!

How To Dress Your Kid* As A Rad American Woman For Halloween

Look at these cuties!

Oh, my heart. My cold, bitter, dried up heart. It almost feels as though it's beating again.

Anyway, these costumes are way better than weird sexualized bananas and jellyfish and stuff. You could also make adult-sized ones! Wheeee!

Everything Good is Made By Women

Around 50% of films made from 1911 to 1925 were written by women. Thanks to The Nitrate Diva on Twitter, I now know this, and so do you.

The longer I'm a part of the online feminist community, the more I learn about how everything awesome was invented by or would have been impossible without women. So many things were made popular by women, and then once they became mainstream, men took it over and declared it was all their idea and then kept women out. Literature. Fantasy. Sci-fi. Computer science. And now film.

You're welcome for all your favorite films, guys. Fucking ungrateful credit-stealers.

Cops Can Now Brutalize Women With Pink Handcuffs, Yay

[TRIGGER WARNING: POLICE BRUTALITY, RAPE, RAPE CULTURE]

This may be the most ridiculous and ironically terrible thing ever. I don't even know where to start.

This Mass. police department will use pink handcuffs to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Oh boy, now police can spread awareness of breast cancer while violently arresting black women who talk back to them. Or arresting women who have been abused for years by violent male partners and finally fought back. Or arresting rape victims for a "false accusation" because her traumatized brain didn't perfectly recall every detail of her rape or her rapist took video of the rape and the cops didn't think she struggled enough for it to count.

Another great decision on the part of U.S. police forces. Hahahahaha. Haha. Fuck.

This show.

So This Happened

[TRIGGER WARNING: MURDER, TRANSMISOGYNY, CLASSISM]

This is kind of old but a trans friend sent this to me and wow.

Attorney: Transgender murder victim’s life not as valuable as higher class victims

I mean, of course, in this country, rich people's lives are valued way more than poor people's lives. And of course, trans people are disproportionately at risk of living in poverty. But god damn, you're not supposed to say it out loud.

“A sentence of 25 years to life is an incredibly long period of time judge,” said John Scarpa, as he asked a judge to go easy on his client, Rasheen Everett, who was convicted last month in the 2010 murder of Amanda Gonzalez-Andujar.
“Shouldn’t that be reserved for people who are guilty of killing certain classes of individuals?” asked Scarpa, according to the New York Post.

"Murder is only really bad if the victim is rich/cis." Wow.

At least the judge was having none of it.

Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter scolded Scarpa as he sentenced Everett to 29 years in prison.
“This court believes every human life in sacred,” he said. “It’s not easy living as a transgender, and I commend the family for supporting her.”

Court Displays Basic Level of Human Decency.

I hope those extra four years were just for that lawyer's absolutely reprehensible argument.

Amazing Women of Color

[TRIGGER WARNING: ACID ATTACKS, GORE]

This is such an amazing story, it should be a movie. Like why isn't it a movie already.

It's about a woman who was a victim of an acid attack--an increasingly common form of "revenge" by grossly entitled men in the middle east, India, and some African and Asian nations. There are photos showing her face and the faces of other victims (including children). If you're triggered by things like disfigurement and gore, then I do not recommend clicking on the following link unless you've disabled images:

Ameneh Bahrami: was I right to pardon the man who blinded me with acid?

This woman was blinded and disfigured because a man couldn't deal with rejection. She refused to marry him several times, so he decided to ruin her life.

Movahedi encountered Bahrami in a workshop at the university. “One day his mother called and said my son wants you,” Bahrami recalled. “I didn’t even know his name.” She rejected his offer for marriage, which infuriated him. “He called me and threatened me that ‘you’ll either marry me or I’ll wreck your life’.” Bahrami reported the harassment to the police but they didn’t take it seriously.

Of course they didn't.

The man was originally going to be sentenced to death, but Ameneh decided to spare his life and instead fought for the right to blind him in both eyes the way he'd blinded her, minus the disfigurement. What happened next is touching as fuck.

In Bahrami’s case, she or her family were allowed to drip acid into Movahedi’s eyes. A media furore led to the postponement of the sentence being carried out but eventually, in July 2011, Bahrami and her family went to Tehran’s judiciary hospital where Movahedi was due to be rendered unconscious before acid was dripped into his eyes.
“He kept swearing at me as they prepared him on the bed,” she said. “There was no word of regret, nothing to indicate that he was sorry.”
Being blind, Bahrami could not carry out the sentence herself, but her younger brother agreed to do it.
At the last minute, as officials were counting down, she pardoned him. “I couldn’t do it, I knew I could not live with it until the end of my life,” she said. “I knew I would have suffered and burned twice had I done that.”
She added: “Movahedi was completely in shock, he fell at my feet, I said go away and don’t utter my name in your whole life.”

I want to pause here and say I would have supported her even if she'd chose to blind him. I have no idea what it feels like to be blinded and disfigured, having my whole life taken from me, being ostracized by society because now my face looks like it's melting and people can not deal with that. She exercised a level of mercy and compassion that I'm not sure I'm capable of. I might have let the courts hang the bastard.

Ameneh even deals with doubt, as she feels that letting him off easy might be encouraging other men to do the same thing Movahedi did to her. And of course, there have been other acid attacks since then.

“I feel I’m guilty. If I had carried out the sentence, maybe those incidents in Isfahan would not have happened,” she said. “I feel as if I had to do this. I felt as if I freed a wolf from its cage.”

And then, even though Movahedi was supposed to stay in prison until his family could compensate Ameneh for her medical expenses, this happened:

Movahedi was released from jail last year, apparently pardoned by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, though no compensation had been paid to Bahrami. “I felt completely betrayed,” she said.

Well fuck. Clearly, this man is not actually sorry at all for what he's done.

But at the very least, Ameneh has been able to write and release a book on her experiences. It's called Eye for an Eye, and hasn't yet been translated to English, but it is in several other languages including Spanish, so if you speak another language unlike this U.S.-born-and-raised-in-a-useless-education-system-that-somehow-thinks-its-too-good-to-properly-teach-foreign-language person, check it out.

I can only hope that she finds success and peace, and that her story inspires others to fight the incredible injustice and hatred involved in acid attacks. Fight to end deadly male entitlement and male violence against women. Thank you, Ameneh Bahrami, for being so amazing.

Most accurate thing ever.

Oh Lord the Male Tears

[TRIGGER WARNING: RAPE, RAPE CULTURE]

Some college boy is super duper offended that he had to attend a class on consent because he thinks he doesn't "look like" a rapist.

For the record, he totally does. Look at this gross entitled white boy:

Seriously, this is the kid I would avoid at parties because he'd probably insult my intelligence for five minutes before trying to convince me to come back to his place just to see his giant collection of boring books by other entitled white guys when he's really going to try and coerce me into the bed while quoting bad white guy poetry.

But that's not the point. This kid never explains what a rapist does look like. Should we only require classes for the college boys wearing ski masks or openly playing with pill bottles full of roofies? Or is there another type of person who looks like a rapist? Please explain.

The answer, of course, is that very few rapists look anything similar to what a rapist caricature might look like. They don't all have porn mustaches or shifty eyes or bouncer necks. Other caricatures include horrible racism. They mostly look like normal people. Because they are normal people. Because the entitlement attitude of a rapist is very much normal across Western society. That's why we need these consent classes, asswipe. People can't read minds, or else rape wouldn't be a problem at all.

And how selfish do you have to be to whine and cry about having to attend a consent class when like a third of men will admit to being willing to rape women if you don't explicitly call it rape and one third of college women in the U.K. have been victims of sexual assault or unwanted sexual advances. You'd rather they not have a class at all and that shit just be allowed to continue? Obviously they can't profile people for imaginary rapist-like characteristics. So either all students have to attend or none.

Stop being a whiny entitled little boy and sit through the fucking class because it could very well prevent someone from raping someone else, you nasty piece of soggy week-old crumpet.

Racists Guarantee Star Wars VII Will Be a Huge Hit

When I first saw #BoycottStarWarsVII on the trending list on Twitter, my first thought was "oh no, what did they do to Star Wars now?" But then I found out that it's just a bunch of racists super mad that one of the film's lead characters is a black guy.

Apparently this guy here is going to promote "white genocide":

He looks more like he's going to promote poor aim. Because storm trooper. Haha.

Anyway, I'd been pretty uninterested in the new Star Wars movie since being horribly disappointed three times in a row last time they decided to make new Star Wars movies. Now, thanks to racists, I understand that the lead characters are a woman and a black man. And I, along with everyone else who wants to spite racists by seeing a movie, will be seeing the shit out of this movie. Since I know that's a lot of people, I foresee much profits in this movie's future.

Seriously, how racist do you have to be to see a single black protagonist in some sci-fi movie and go "WHITE GENOCIDE, ANTI-WHITE PROPAGANDA, KILL IT." Every halfway decent person who at least doesn't want people to know they're racist is going to go to this movie now. Just write JJ Abrams a check, white supremacists.

I don't like Kill Bill but yeah.

Recommended Reading

[TRIGGER WARNING: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, RAPE, ABUSE]

For my fellow feminists, this is recommended bookmarking. If you're anything like me and have a tendency to argue with anti-feminists online, you're very familiar with the false claim that just as many women abuse men as men abuse women. And yes, there are studies that suggest this, but an actual domestic violence researcher flatly points out why these studies suck:

She recounts some of her research that showed that when men talked about women’s violence against men, some cited abuse as not having a hot meal on the table, not having the children bathed before bed, or women spending money on gambling or shopping. At the more severe end of the spectrum, they nominated verbal and emotional violence as abuse. Then, a tiny minority documented physical abuse, and an even smaller minority named sexual abuse.
“Women were talking about being run over, being drugged and raped at knifepoint, having their children dangled over high rise balconies till they did as they were told and of course you get verbal and emotional violence,” says McInnes. “When we were talking about physical violence against men, one of the worst examples was that she banged his head with the cupboard door – which isn’t good – but the sheer level of fear, harm and terror that women talked about was simply not present in what the men’s data showed.”

And women are supposed to be the weaker sex? Women are the ones who complain all the time? Men think that women not catering to their every need is abuse. I've had a man accuse me of harassment and threaten to have me arrested because I pointed out that he threatened to kill me. Not even slightly exaggerating.

Studies that anti-feminists site, if they're not just completely misinterpreted, consistently fail to account for any difference in severity of abuse and fail to account for the fact that most of the time, when a woman hits a man, it's in self-defense or part of a fight wherein both partners hit each other. Just like how in the vast majority of cases of a woman murdering her husband or partner, she did so because he was abusing her and/or her children.

This piece by Michael Roddan explains all this and more. It's a rather long article but full of anti-feminist-crushing goodness. Enjoy.

#AllLivesMatter So Let's Send Death Threats to a Yoga Instructor

[TRIGGER WARNING: DEATH THREATS, RACISM]

This is probably the worst thing I've read in a while, so buckle the fuck up.

There was (emphasis on "was") a yoga collective called POC Yoga that was meant to be a safe place for people of color. White people, including allies and partners, were respectfully asked not to attend the classes.

For five years, this went on, and everyone was fine with it because it was located in Seattle wherein there are 5,000 yoga centers where white people can go and very likely be surrounded by a crapload of other white people. Then some shitbag radio host found out about it and FUCKED EVERYTHING UP.

During his October 7 show on KIRO-FM, Dori myopically focused on a part of POC Yoga’s class description which put forth “white friends, allies, and partners are respectfully asked not to attend.” Despite on-air claims that he had “zero problems” with POC Yoga, was “perfectly fine” with the practice, and believed POC Yoga “should be free”—he also openly accused POC Yoga of being “racist,” “exclusionary,” and more than once (instead of calling the collective by its self-chosen name) referred to it as “no whites yoga class.”

Dori Monson is some conservative radio talk show host that I've never heard of until now, thanks to the fact that his freakout over a harmless safe space for people of color causes his shit fans to send an avalanche of fucking death threats to the poor woman who runs the class.

Directly following Dori’s heated criticism, Teresa said hate calls and death threats started pouring in every five minutes. There were all together over 200 phone calls, and hundreds and hundreds of emails filled with hostility and hate.

Thanks to all that, Teresa Wang is now traumatized as all hell and POC Yoga is dead. Way to go, fellow white people! People of color just wanted a safe space to do yoga away from our privileged fuckery and the second we found out about it, we proved exactly why it was fucking necessary by sending hundreds of death threats to some poor woman who was just trying to do a nice thing for people.

Teresa said that since her interview for Dori’s show, her work has been affected; she’s suffered loss of wages. Before this incident she had practiced yoga herself twice a week. But she hasn’t gone to a yoga class since. Instead she is alternately consumed with anger and horrifically traumatized. She said, sobbing: “I’m going to some kind of therapy on a daily basis … I just feel like my mental health is so not well right now. I am not well.” She then stopped and could not speak for a while.

Way to fucking go. All this because you couldn't go to a single yoga class that you never would have gone to anyway, because I don't think any of Dori's listeners would enter a yoga studio to escape from Sharknado. How the fuck do you send death threats over something like this and then look at yourself in the mirror in the morning? Are you not capable of feeling any kind of shame?

I couldn't find any place to donate to Teresa Wang, but I am going to spread this around like mad. But really, her bills should be covered until she can recover from this.

Duck on a leash duck on a leash duck on a lEASH.

It's "Basketball" and "Men's Basketball" Now

And so the women's takeover of all sports continues. Actual basketball, as opposed to boring ol' men's basketball, is getting more and more attention. One team in particular has a huge fanbase that is currently celebrating the Minnesota Lynx's third championship win in five years after an intense battle against the Indiana Fever.

You know what else is great about real sports teams? You never have to worry about censoring their names. They just name their teams after cool animals, weather events, and things with high temperatures.

Anyway, the Minnesota Lynx have been packing the stands at home games, and apparently Prince is a huge fan.

“The arena was packed last night, and it was loud and everyone was into it,” Michael Rand, who has followed the Lynx closely in his role on the sports desk at the Minneapolis Star Tribune, told ThinkProgress. “It was a fantastic atmosphere.”
Maya Moore
It wasn’t always this way, however. For years, the Lynx were in the basement of the WNBA and struggled to generate a lot of fan support. From 2000-2008, the team was ranked 11th or 12th in the league in attendance, averaging around 5,000 fans per game.
But in 2010, the journey to greatness began when coach Cheryl Reeve was hired and the team traded to get hometown hero Lindsay Whalen from the Connecticut Sun. Then, with the first overall pick in the 2011 draft, the Lynx selected Maya Moore, who has since gone on to become one of the most successful athletes in American professional sports.

Well done, Maya Moore! Once again, women of color are kicking serious ass at sports and making sure everyone knows that there's sports, and then there's men's "sports." In fact, I'm pretty sure it needs to be the NBA and the MNBA now. Let's get on that logo change, people.

US Anti-Black Racism Update

[TRIGGER WARNING: TORTURE, DEATH, POLICE BRUTALITY, WHITE TERRORISM, RACIST SLURS]

The following happened while a black man was in custody at a police station where cameras are always recording. So the police knew they were going to be recorded. Just want to establish that.

A video was released showing cops tasering a black man in the genitals while he's tied to a chair. I didn't watch it. Because oh my god. Matthew Ajibade died in custody. Because oh my god.

Matthew was arrested because he had a bipolar episode, hit his girlfriend, and then broke a deputy's nose. For those who are unaware, people suffering from bipolar disorder can experience psychosis during a manic episode. It is very possible that this mentally ill man didn't know what he was doing or who he was doing it to when he became violent. Either way, breaking a cop's nose does not warrant a death sentence without trial.

At the very least, the killing was ruled a homicide by the coroner, several officers were fired, and the cop who used the taser and involved cops have been charged with serious crimes, including involuntary manslaughter.

Still, the fact that this happened in full view of the camera suggests that they didn't think they would be punished at all. And who can blame them? Cops do this shit all the time.

In better news, a group of horrible racists who are not cops who crashed a birthday party for a black child while screaming the n-slur and brandishing weapons have been charged with terrorism.

Fucking finally. It's being acknowledged that my fellow white people are capable of terrorism, even though they're not Arab, or Muslim, or some religion that seems similar to Muslim because they wear head coverings of some sort. I really, really, really hope they're convicted and thrown in prison for a long time.

Badass

Hillary Clinton is a total imperialist capitalist asshole but I can't help but admire how much of a fucking badass woman she is.

During the Democratic debate, the pointless manufactured email "scandal" pushed by the Republicans in a desperate effort to discredit her and because they know it's an easy way to score points with their horrible misogynistic constituents, came up. One of the candidates who is not either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders was all "blah blah we need to make sure we have ethics in presidential emailing blah blah blah," and Hillary just stands there with a little smile the whole time and when the moderator asks if she wants to respond, she just says, "no."

The crowd went wild. You can watch it here:

Again, I do hope that Bernie wins the nomination, but I cracked the fuck up at that "no." All women could benefit from this example. Shut down ridiculous, pontificating men with that single, simple, magical word, "no." Full sentence. Full stop.

Badass.

Halloween Fun

[TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUALIZATION, TRANSMISOGYNY, UNNECESSARY GENDERING]

I stopped into a Halloween store recently to grab some Spirit Gum, and as always I had to take a look at the ridiculousness that is the difference between costumes for men and costumes for women. None of this is new but I took some terrible cell phone photos anyway.

If you're a man, you can be a blue crayon! Haha! Human crayon! Oh and I guess if you're a woman you can also be a crayon, whatever, this isn't your costume section but whateverrrr....

And wouldn't you rather be a "Hot Ticket"?? I mean, if you're a woman, and you're going to be an object for Halloween, then you should REALLY be an object, right? Ridiculous high heels not included.

If you're a man, you can be a banana! How silly, being a banana. Wear black pants and a long-sleeved shirt for comfort and warmth! If you're a woman, you can wear a very short dress that says Coca Cola on it! No pants or shirt for you.

Don't forget about the unnecessarily gendered item costumes! Now that's scary!

I also found plenty of racist costumes, but was relieved to not find any costumes mocking trans women. The horrifically transmisogynistic Caitlyn Jenner costume is apparently a Spirit Halloween exclusive! Which is why I will never shop there again.

While I was in the Halloween Outlet Store, as it was called, another woman came in. As I was looking through the 99 cent bin, because why not, the lone store employee took her over to the women's costume section. After a second or two, I heard her say "I work with children."

Another pause, some mumbling from the male employee, and then: "I work with children."

Then she left.

My first though was to wonder whether she'd ever been in a shitty costume shop before. This is how it's always been. How could any woman be surprised to find that every costume actually marketed toward women is ridiculously sexualized?

My next thought was that maybe she was completely aware of the fact that this is how it is, and gets her kicks by going into every shitty costume shop she can find, getting a male employee to show her the women's costumes, and watch them mutter and fumble and turn red under the harsh light of the reality that is systemic, marketed misogyny.

If that's the case, then that mysterious woman is my hero.

Headline of the Month

The Gun Oil piqued his interest, so Bracey read the label aloud:
“Let’s see here. ‘Long-lasting lubrication with easy cleanup. Glycerin and paraben free. Wetter, lighter feel than silicone.’ Oh that sounds good. That sounds really good. I think my gun would work really good, wetter and lighter.”
Then I see the ‘Ginseng and guarana to promote blood flow,’ and I’m like, ‘What?’
For topical use, apply desired amount to genital areas. Boom!”
A Walmart employee told The Blaze that Gun Oil is routinely mistaken for a sporting goods item and is often returned to the gun counter.

The creators of Gun Oil are certified geniuses.

Somebody put this to music.

Look At This Awesome Thing: Vengeful Tank Woman

[TRIGGER WARNING: WAR, DEATH, NAZIS]

I've been over the basics of WWII more times than would ever be necessary because middle aged white people seem to be unreasonably obsessed with that fucking war, but I have not once in my life heard about this woman until now.

Mariya Oktyabrskaya learned that her husband had been killed by Nazis and responded by going on a TANK RAMPAGE. Thanks to the Tumblr blog Ultra Facts for this one.

Most of the men fighting alongside Mariya just saw her as a publicity stunt and didn’t take her seriously. However, their doubts were quickly laid to rest when Mariya drove her tank straight into battle and was the first tank to breach the German lines. In doing so, she destroyed several machine gun nests and German artillery. It wasn’t long until the Germans figured out that her tank was the one they needed to really worry about.
The Germans immediately started focusing their gunfire on her medium Mariya-Vasilievna-Oktyabrskayasized tank, temporarily crippling it. Mariya didn’t sell all her worldly possessions just so she could sit around in a crippled tank. She was determined to get her vengeance. She leaped out of her tank into a hail of gunfire and started patching it back together so that she could charge even further into the enemy lines.

I would have been a lot more interested in high school history class if she had been part of the fucking lesson plan.

"You killed by husband? Fine then, I'm selling all my possessions to buy a FUCKING TANK. HOW ABOUT THAT."

I hope I come to be that much of a badass.

US Anti-Black Racism Update

[TRIGGER WARNING: CHILD DEATH, GUN VIOLENCE, POLICE BRUTALITY]

There's a whole lot of shit I could put in this update but I think this sums things up pretty well:

You know, Tamir Rice, the kid who was sitting on a bench at a playground fiddling with a toy gun when a white cop pulled up, screamed something at him, and then shot him .00000002 seconds later, didn't provide emergency medical care, and was surprised when people were upset that the child died.

Yeah, that whole incident was ruled to be justified. So any black kid playing with a toy gun or probably anything that looks like a gun at all can be justifiably shot with barely any warning. But #AllLivesMatter, right?

Also:

Rice family attorney Subodh Chandra questioned the reports’ release at 8 PM on a holiday weekend, and suggested the prosecutor’s office was intentionally avoiding the accountability that Rice’s family demands.
“It is now obvious that the prosecutor’s office has been on a 12-month quest to avoid providing that accountability,” Chandra told the Associated Press.

Yep.

Me rising above your bullshit.

Dildos Before Guns

So, the global arms industry owns the United States, making it impossible to get effective gun control legislation through political means.... anywhere. The GOOD NEWS is that while we can't stop the horrific gun violence plaguing our nation and making it so nobody feels safe ever, we can carry dildos around.

At UT Austin, an ‘obscene’ protest will use erotica (rhymes with Glock) to fight guns on campus.

When ’60s protesters were opposing the Vietnam War, they emblazoned the demand for sexual freedom over violence on buttons they wore on their chests. Come next fall, students at the University of Texas Austin will protest concealed handguns on campus by strapping “gigantic swinging dildos” to their backpacks.
“The State of Texas has decided that it is not at all obnoxious to allow deadly concealed weapons in classrooms, however it DOES have strict rules about free sexual expression, to protect your innocence,” reads the Facebook event created by music student Jessica Jin.

Hashtag CocksNotGlocks.

I guess it's an okay idea but I'm still of the opinion that nothing but some sort of massive revolution will get rid of the stranglehold the arms industry has on this country and pretty much all of the world.

The nice thing is that the organizer of this event is promising to get people cheap dildos for the protest.

“I will personally take it upon myself to put in the time and legwork to find a dildo supplier sponsorship,” she says. “Come one, come all dildos.”

Fine.

Ahem

I super love when people act like feminists are taking over the world. They fret and shriek about how feminism is washing over the globe like an unstoppable virus. Some MRAs and such even try to claim that women have more power than men.

Well.

Okay bye.

#NoBraDay: I Hope You Like Feminist Rants Because Hahahahahaha

Okay, this is kind of personal for me. That's probably why I'm angry to the point that I'm smiling right now but if a dude happened to come up to me and say "it's No Bra Day!" I would just up and punch him in the face.

That's not really accurate because 1) I am in my apartment, not a public space, and 2) I seem to be physically incapable of physically harming people. I'd probably just scream incoherently at him until he ran away.

This is not the point. FOCUS.

So a couple minutes ago I noticed that hashtag NoBraDay is trending on Facebook! "Day Encourages People to Go Braless on Oct. 13 to Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer" it says.

There is one nice thing about that. It says "people" rather than "women." Now for the rant.

There is a cishet male individual who happens to be a part of a general group of people involving friends of mine I met in college. He is friends with my current significant other. He is at parties I attend put on by said friends and my he is in a gaming group attended by my SO.

He is a fucking misogynistic fuck and he is dead to me.

One of the reasons he is dead to me is that he used to post on Facebook every Wednesday about it being "No Bra Wednesday" or just saying "it's Wednesday ladies ;)." Fucking ew. But his excuse for this was because he read somewhere that bras increase the likelihood of breast cancer. The almost certainly don't, but even if it's true, there is a 100% change that he doesn't actually give a fuck about breast cancer. He doesn't care about the lives of women. He just wants to see tits. Using breast cancer, which kills about 40,000 women each year in the U.S. alone, is just an excuse for him to be a fucking creep. Posting shit like that allows him to harass women and remind us that we're nothing but sexualized parts to him without fear of criticism.

And I tried to explain this to him. Fuck me, right? I actually sat down with him in person and was like "you need to stop doing this because objectifying women fuels rape culture." He pretended to understand and said he would at least switch to focusing his posts on actually spreading information about breast cancer. That was a complete lie. He changed nothing about his behavior. And it pissed me off all the more because back when I was for some reason Facebook friends with him, obviously I could clearly see him continuing to do what he told me to my face he would not do anymore.

What a piece of shit.

I eventually blocked him and declared him dead to me (and unlike him, I keep my promises).

But then Facebook comes along to remind me that while I can block the above shitprick fuckwaffle, there's a WHOLE WORLD of men who don't give a fuck about women or the things that kill us but will gleefully exploit that shit for the sake of their fucking genitals.

“Hur hur show us ur boobs no it’s okay it’s for breast cancer awareness, trust us, we won’t be aware of breast cancer at all unless you show us your tits, we don’t give a fuck about anything that’s killing people unless you sexualize it, all we have the capacity to care about is what gets us fucking horny, SHOW US YOUR TITS.”

Nevermind that objectification makes it easy as fuck to hurt a person, to exploit a person, to rape and kill a person. It's all okay because they're helping us, right? They're helping us by telling us to let them gawk at our bra-less tits. It's like the 60's dude telling women that letting him fuck us is "sexual liberation" when really he doesn't give a fuck about our liberation, he just wants to fuck us, to dominate us, to lift himself up by conquering us, to make himself feel like a man and remind us of our place.

"Why do you hate men?" Hmmm hmm mhmmmmh hmmmm hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Geek Girl Con 2015 Photos

Photos are up from this year's best convention ever. No, there are none of me. I somehow always manage to not get anyone to take a photo of my costume. There's just too much to do! But look at these:
