Morning Announcements

Thanks to our country's poor infrastructure, global warming, and capitalism in general, I have been without electricity for two days. I'm blogging with my phone right now. I'm also babysitting today. So don't even expect a gif of the day because I don't know how to upload a gif with a phone and don't care to learn.

Later, suckers.

Gif of the Day

Omg the birb tried to nibble the kitty's paw omg.

No No No No No No NO No No

I was going to be done blogging for the day but this can't wait until next week.

They're making a movie about the Isla Vista shooting. Because I have to specify in this fucking country, I'm talking about the one with the college dude who tried to shoot up a sorority because women wouldn't just come up and fuck him for existing. Then when he couldn't get in he just shot some random women and men of color.

I came across this shit weeks ago and just completely noped out. Couldn't handle it. Now it's come back around again and I'm officially in the "anger" phase.

The official trailer is horrific. I'm about to describe it, so buckle up. It starts with a scene of a high school boy asking a girl to a dance and her very nicely saying "I'm going with someone else" in between fade-to-blacks with the words "There's a girl that every guy wants and can't have." Then it shows him getting beat up by the girl's boyfriend and a crowd of his cronies, then getting attacked by a man who is likely some male parental unit or guardian with a baseball bat. Then, all bruised up, he goes out and buys a creepy Halloween mask, gets a big knife, and proceeds to try and murder what looks like mostly teenage girls in their underwear.

The tagline of this garbage train is "Monsters Aren't Born. They Are Created."

Here's the director's defense of the movie.

First and foremost, I would like to publicly apologize to everyone who has been offended in any way by our making of this film.  It was never our intent to monopolize on the tragic shootings in Isla Vista that took place last year.  While I do admit there is the connection of Santa Barbara, this film is not about Elliot Rodger.  The fictional character in the film is not meant to portray anyone in particular. It is meant to portray incidents that take place, not only in Santa Barbara, but across the country on a daily basis.
Our intentions were not to make light of such a serious issue, but to engage our audience in an active discussion about bullying and violence.
As a graduate of UCSB and a former resident of Del Playa, that day was a knife to my heart.  For me, the actions of one individual tainted a lot of good memories of an innocent time and brought darkness to a place that should only be home to the hopes and dreams of the young.
For all touched by the tragedy at DP, know this: I stand right there with you.  And share love and compassion for our fallen Gauchos.
-Shaun Hart

"To everyone who has been offended" *ten-minute long fart noise*

We all know that saying an individual has been "offended" is just a straight up attack on their character now. "Offended" has become an insult in our society. So fuck you. I'm not "offended." I'm deeply sickened and I fucking hate you, Shaun.

You say it's not about Elliot Rodger, yet the trailer shows the kid being rejected, and the words you put up on screen clearly suggest that rejection from a girl started the whole thing, and then he's attacking a bunch of girls. And it's set in fucking Isla Vista. The movie is titled "Del Playa," which is the name of one of the community's maIN STREETS. HELLO. HOW CAN THE MOVIE HAVE A CONNECTION TO SANTA BARBARA AND BE SET IN ISLA VISTA AND NOT BE ABOUT ELLIOT RODGER?

And we're supposed to believe it's just about bullying and violence? Going off of the official movie trailer, all I see is a rejected boy attacking half-naked girls. If this is about bullying, why isn't the trailer instead full of images of the kid attacking other boys? Or his shitty dad or whoever? The trailer contains a half second shot of a dead body that might be male and another half second shot of the killer about to hit or stab a hooded figure that might also be male, and then shot after shot of him attacking girls in bras and terrified girls and a girl with tape over her mouth.

"It was never out intend to monopolize" well you're clearly trying to make as much money off of this as possible by making it into a fucking snuff film that caters to fucking pedophile assholes who get off seeing teen girls murdered in their underwear because WHY ELSE WOULD YOU UNNECESSARILY HAVE HALF THE TEEN GIRLS IN THEIR UNDERWEAR AT THE TIME OF THEIR MURDER?

So based on the trailer, which I would assume you'd probably have to sign off on, it looks like a movie that sends the message that women/girls create monsters by rejecting men/boys and having asshole boyfriends who beat them up and then probably the mother figure is to blame for letting the father figure beat him and then let's spend the rest of the film showing teen girls in lacy underwear getting terrorized and tortured and murdered.

And the discussion of bullying comes in where, exactly?

Shaun Hart, you are officially disgusting and horrible, and I hope the movie gets pulled and I hope the creator of the storyline goes broke and the producers lose a ton of money on it and I hope all of you are never able to make movies again because you're shoved into garbage cans that are duct-taped shut and rolled out of Hollywood and you're told that if you ever come back they'll do it again with more duct tape.

Men Are So Embarrassing

Of course right after I use this month's "Headline of the Month," an even better one pops up.

Scam of the Day: Turns Out Ashley Madison Was 20 Million Dudes Trying to Talk to 1,500 Women

Before I go into why this is hilarious, I need to talk about why the release of the names of people who had Ashley Madison account was terrible.

Firstly, people in countries where being gay can get you thrown in jail/killed used it to find one another for some relief from the hell of living a lie. Now these individuals are in serious danger. The hackers don't seem to care.

Second, people in abusive relationships who don't feel safe leaving (because the danger of being murdered by an abusive spikes when you try to leave) will cheat in order to find some comfort and emotional support in their own hell. Now those people are in danger.

Generally, people's sex lives are their own business. Except for that Duggar guy. He forfeited his right to privacy a long time ago. They should have just released the accounts from that family and sex-shaming politicians.

This is hilarious, not for homophobic reasons, but because so many men try to convince women that we cheat just as much as men. And I think the idea that men who've convinced themselves of that idea over time because they spent so much time trying to convince women of it so they could get laid going onto Ashley Madison assuming they were going to find women when in reality it was utterly saturated with similar asshole men.

I hope they're all super embarrassed now.

Ableism is Deadly

Ill and disabled people are dying in Britain because the government found them "fit to work." 2,380 people died between 2011 and 2014 soon after their financial assistance was cut off. A crap load of those people died within two weeks of losing their assistance.

So either losing their assistance killed them or they were found fit to work when they were on the edge of death.

A lot of people are saying the numbers should be "treated with caution" until they can be further analyzed. I feel like people's lives should be treated with caution until it can be determined that your shitty government won't kill them.

Apparently the "work capability assessment" process is outsourced to a private company that has been widely criticized for being terrible at everything.

The WCA, currently administered by private outsourcing firm Maximus, having for most of the last government been run by Atos, has been widely criticised as error-prone and mechanistic, often causing harm to the sick and disabled claimants who are obliged to undergo it. It has been dogged by administrative delays, which have often left claimants stressed and penniless, and there have been hundreds of thousands of appeals against fit-for-work decisions in recent years, about four in 10 of which have succeeded.

But we shouldn't assume their incompetence killed the sick people they left without any support? Okay.

This is a part of a pattern in the UK lately to throw chronically ill and disabled people under the bus as part of their austerity programs. Disabled people have literally been attacked in public in the UK because of the rhetoric that blames them and their totally selfish need to have money to live for all of the country's financial problems somehow. Turns out they've been dying without that money.

It's incredibly obvious how ableism is deadly. There are very few dots to connect. Yet people want to act like it doesn't exist. Seriously?

Marrying Young Teen Girls is Not Normal

And never has been.

A section of the grossest people on Earth like to talk about how, in the Middle Ages and surrounding time periods, grown men used to marry young teen girls all the time! Or at least teenagers used to marry each other because they'd die by like 30 so they needed to get going and impregnate those teen girls.

Thanks again to Tumblr, I've found out that historical texts say that the average age of marriage for men and women was 18-23. Many were pregnant at the time of marriage, but only because premarital sex was actually pretty accepted if the pair intended to get married.

The only reason this myth came to be is because the only people marrying 13-year-old girls when they were like 50 were the rich nobles who were the ones who had time/money to keep an account of their lives and family history. And rich people are fucked up.

Also, in cultures in which arranged marriages were common, couples would be promised to one another at a young age but wouldn't be married or even meet until they were much older.

So, as always, people claiming that marrying and impregnating (raping) young teen girls is normal or that the stigma of such a thing is recent are pedophilia/child molester apologists and should be run out of town by a mob carrying torches and pitchforks, and then run out of the next town in the same fashion until the only place they have left to go is international waters.

Headline of the Month

Louisiana townsfolk terror-freak over Hebrew "welcome home" sign

It says "Welcome home, Yamit." People thought it was in Arabic and called the sheriff's office to report a "terror message."

Lowering the Bar makes some really good points about how ridiculous this is.

  • You are not necessarily in danger just because you see something you don't recognize.
  • The risk that you will be in the danger zone of a terror attack is incredibly low overall.
  • It's probably even lower in Gardner, Louisiana, not known to be high on the list of ISIS targets.
  • If it were, the terrorists probably would not warn you or communicate with each other by putting up signs.
  • And if they just wanted to terrorize you with signs, they wouldn't write them IN ARABIC.

American Islamophobia. Always funny. Unless you're Muslim.

This is Privilege

Facebook just suggested to me a Vice article that is one of the best representations of privilege I've ever seen.

Literally privilege.jpg

"She doesn't understand why you don't do the same thing."

Well as an organic being I NEED TO EAT, ETERNAL VACATION LADY.

According to the article, she's able to do this because she is a very "low-budget traveler" (neurotypical + able-bodied/healthy privilege) and she saved up thousands of dollars while she was working her software company project manager job (class + a bunch of other privileges) and she gets odd jobs being a diving instructor and shit in the middle of this eternal vacation (race + able-bodied + cishet privilege) and she can crash with friends she makes (neurotypical privilege).

Reasons why other people don't do this:

  1. If they can save any money at all, it goes toward emergencies.
  2. Kids.
  3. Debt.
  4. Many countries hostile toward certain races, religions, and/or LGBTQAIP+ people.
  5. Traveling is difficult or impossible due to illness, chronic pain, or disability.
  6. Needing constant access to medication for mental/physical issues.
  7. People of color and LGBTQAIP+ people more likely to be assaulted.
  8. Anxiety disorders making it impossible to make random friends whenever needed.
  9. Not lucky enough to be born in the Netherlands.
  10. WTF.

This is why I don't follow Vice.

Gif of the Day

Feelin' the beat.

Women's Equality Day

Today is officially "Women's Equality Day," which commemorates the day on which women won the right to vote in the 1920's.

It really should be called "White Feminism Bullshit Day" because women of color, even if they could technically vote, still had a ton of bullshit blocks in place that kept many of them from being able to vote like poll taxes and shit that weren't abolished until the Voting Rights Act of the 1960's. Native Americans didn't have the right to vote at all country-wide until 1965.

Also, as is really fucking obvious, gaining the right to vote doesn't create instant equality.

So yeah, I don't really think this day, August 26, should be celebrated. If we're going to celebrate Women's Equality Day as a day to talk about how we need to work on equal representation and government parity and stopping men from killing and raping us all the time, then let's put it on the birthday of some famous activist woman of color. Sojourner Truth or bell hooks or something. Anything's better than White Feminism Day.

I Need You To Do Something for Me

Be nice to yourself! My god, be nice to yourself. Stop saying mean things to yourself all the time. Who taught you that you deserve to be told mean things? Do you even like those people anymore? Why take their advice on what you deserve?

You deserve to hear nice things said about you all the time, because you're awesome and you're doing the best you can and that's awesome.

Trans Liberation Tuesday

Today is a national day of action to protest against the violence against trans people, especially trans women of color, in the U.S. 19 trans women have already been deliberately and brutally murdered in this country and they're undoubtedly all hate crimes. There are protests happening in D.C., Houston, Dayton, Nashville, Chicago, Columbus, Tacoma, Portland, etc. #TransLiberationTuesday is happening now on Twitter.

The numbers keep growing. Last year it was 14. It's not even September this year and we're at 19 after three were killed within 24 hours. This is a crisis.

Show up to a protest if you can. Post about it on social media if you can. Cis people especially.

Misogynist Nerds Get Spanked at Hugo Awards

Do you hear that? That faint, yet piercing sound seeming to come from the depths of the universe?

That's the sound of me laughing my ass off.

The Hugo Awards are for fantasy and sci-fi literature, so naturally, it's Geek City. And I know from experience that geek boys can be the worst, most insidious misogynists. Case in point, a group of white geek dudes that actually calls themselves the "Sad Puppies" (falling right into the male tears trap there) pulled some bullshit to make it so that almost all of this year's nominees were by white men.

Apparently the whole Sad Puppy deal is that they think awards should only be based on the literature and that authors shouldn't get special treatment because they're female or people of color or LGBTQAIP+ or fit into any other marginalized identity that might give them a different perspective than that of your able-bodied, neurotypical, cishet white dude.

It never occurs to them to consider why all their personal favorite stories are by super privileged people. After all, writing is not some kind of objective science. Like any art form, story telling is only really good when it deliberately breaks the rules. I majored in creative writing, and the conclusion I came to is that the only way to measure the value of a written work is by the depth and breadth of the effect it has on the reader. And that's a deeply personal experience. For me, I'm most affected when I read something from a perspective I'd never considered that teaches me something I've never known. And that's why diversity is essential.

Anyway, as it turns out, there is hope for humanity, because all the other nerds were so pissed about the Puppies shitting all over the ballot that they collectively forked over a crap load of money for "member dues" so they could vote and made it so none of the Puppy-backed nominees won. Literally. For the categories that only had Puppy-backed nominees, most of the votes went to "No Award." They all lost.

Pardon me.

*Throws chair in hysterical mirth*

I love my fellow nerds sometimes. Most of them really are good.

Fuck you, Sad Puppies.

This is Not Okay

Just when you think progress is being made, some fucking assholes remind you that everything is still fucked.

There’s A Caitlyn Jenner Halloween Costume And It’s Pretty Awful

Yep. They took the coming out of Caitlyn Jenner as a trans woman - a highly visible event that prompted discussion and wider acceptance of trans people in general - and made it into a literal costume. And then they put it on an obvious cis dude and went HAHA, FUNNY, MAN DRESSED AS WOMAN, HAHA and made that the product page.

This is so clearly terrible on so many levels and is a stark reminder that even though the rest of us are celebrating progress and learning shit, much of the rest of the world remains completely ignorant on the entire point. Caitlyn Jenner's coming out was supposed to teach us cis people that trans women are women and always have been - that they're NOT men in costume.

And the description on AnytimeCostumes, com says this:

You probably won't break any Twitter records when you wear this outfit like Caitlyn did when she first made her account, but you'll be sure to get a few laughs out of your friends and the other guests at the get together.

Yes, because Caitlyn Jenner is a joke, just like all trans women, right? Walking, talking jokes.

Fuck you. Fuck this. This costume is all the things that trans women have been fighting against and all the reasons they keep fucking getting murdered and killing themselves. FUCK. YOU.

For what it's worth, I wrote a petition on this shit:

Remove Transphobic Halloween Costumes

It's got a whopping 48 signatures because nobody cares about trans women, woo. But during my research, I found the email addresses of the owners of these shit websites.

Gif of the Day

Not sure that's appropriate for a Disney interview but a good way to get a pushy journalist to back off.

MRAs: Still Privileged Dillholes in Real Life

So I managed to get through this rather long piece by a guy who went out and interviewed a self-identified MRA face-to-face and did phone interviews with Paul Elam of A Voice for Men and Roosh V of those books that teach you how to get away with raping women.

The internet is full of men who hate feminism. Here's what they're like in person.

I'm a bit exhausted.

Really, this article didn't tell me much I didn't already know. It turns out that, when speaking face-to-face with a cishet white man, an MRA is not much different from your typical MRA online before you start pushing them. The only difference is that when the white cishet man starts poking at the MRA's poor arguments and challenging their worldview, the real life MRA doesn't start calling the author a fat cunt.

But his arguments are all the same. You have the misleading suicide rate, the falsehood about family court being biased against men, the draft, and the dirty, dangerous jobs that men try so hard to keep women out of. And underneath all that is the dude's real problem - that he feels women are gaining too much power and that there won't be enough left for him.

On thing I did find interesting/infuriating is Paul Elam's origin story - the self-proclaimed moment he realized that "something had to be done" about these uppity women.

"I was standing outside the group room and we were waiting for her to go in, just chatting for a moment about our work," he says, "And just before going into the group, which she was being paid quite a bit of money to do, she says, 'One of my favorite things in the world is to take men's macho bullshit and shove it down their throats.' I saw a lot of this in the treatment field," Elam says, "It's just she said it in such a particularly stark and direct way. At that point I thought, Something needs to be done about this."

Paul Elam used to be a substance abuse counselor, by the way, which should fill you with concern about the kind of people they let be counselors.

And what he says later is incredibly revealing.

He recites a litany of charges against modern psychotherapy, its anti-masculine focus on effusively articulated feelings.

A lot of MRAs and other terrible people spend a lot of time fretting about the modern "attack on masculinity." But one of the standards of traditional masculinity is to be the stoic dude who never expresses emotion except anger. Boys don't cry. Men don't talk about their feelings.

Psychotherapy, by definition, has always centered around talking about feelings. Literally. This is not new. This is not a feature of "modern psychotherapy" - it is psychotherapy and has been since Freud first said "how does zat make you feel?"

Also, anyone who knows anything about mental health knows that you cannot have good mental health without talking about your feelings. Improving emotional health absolutely requires talking about your emotions. And feeling them. And CRYING.

MRAs pull the fact that more men die of suicide than women out all the time yet they lament about the loss of the incredibly unhealthy tendency of men to keep all their sad feelings to themselves and never cry. Somehow, they are unable to connect the dots.

What MRAs advocate for will continue killing men. What feminists advocate for will save them. Taking men's macho bullshit and shoving it down their throats is exactly what they need. Just like my own therapist's action of kicking my ass a little (verbally) for apologizing for my own existence was exactly what I needed.

But what men like Roosh V believe is that ridding men of what feminists have long called "toxic masculinity" is a direct attack on men and that it's teaching them to hate themselves. Because they can't seem to grasp the possibility that masculinity is a social construct that clearly goes against nature. Human beings experience more intense and complex emotions than any other animal. That's why we're social animals. That's why we need to explore and talk about them. That's why we evolved the ability to cry when intense emotions occur.

Seriously, why do you think water pours out of our eyes when we're really sad? Random useless mutation/god made a mistake? It happens for a reason. It's healthy.

But all that traditional masculinity allows men to do in terms of expressing emotion is to get angry and lash out. Become violent. Hit people and destroy property. However, this doesn't mesh well with a civilized society that has laws prohibiting the random punching of people in the face.

And so, thanks to toxic masculinity, men bottle up their emotions, release them in the only way they feel they are allowed, and are then punished for it. That is a pretty fucked up and unfair situation.

MRA's respond to this unfairness by blaming feminists for not allowing men to randomly punch people in the face, in spite of the fact that it doesn't take feminism to see why such an expression of emotion is a problem. Feminists respond by saying "hey guys maybe deal with your problems and release emotions in a healthy way. Crying doesn't have to be bad or mean you're not a man."

I think the feminist response works much better.

In spite of revealing a lot of the obvious and the author relying a bit too much on the ol' thesaurus, I did enjoy the article's ending. The author follows up with the MRA he interviewed face-to-face after GamerGate goes completely out of control and Anita Sarkeesian and others have to flee their homes. As it turns out, MRA feels somewhat remorseful of his previous habit of lashing out at people like Anita online via shitty comments and harassing tweets. But

"I don't know, man. You know. It's all so quick. You see something and it bothers you and you feel annoyed and, like, without thinking about it, you just, like, lash out a bit. Shitty Facebook comment or tweet or whatever. We've all been there. You're, like, right then, pissed or whatever. It's just an in-the-moment thing. You feel bad about it the next day."
"You do?"
"Do you apologize?"
"For being critical? No, I mean, they were still wrong."

Haaaaaa. Classic MRA.

This is What a Hero Looks Like

They could seriously make a movie out of this.

This kid is 17, yet is able to recognize when a person is very afraid. Instead of ignoring it and going about his day, he does something. And in the smartest way, too. This is bystander intervention at its finest.

The entire story is amazing so you have to click the link to read it.

And then maybe remember that black teens are often incredible heroes so maybe stop following them around the store and calling the police on them and fucking shooting and killing them god damn.

So Cute It Hurts

You've probably already seen this but in case you haven't, YOU'RE WELCOME.

I can't even handle how cute this is. I've watched it like ten times and I can't decide if the cutest part is the uncontrollable baby sack happy flaps or the toothless laugh or the part where the baby gets so excited that they just start snorting.

U.S. Anti-Black Racism Update

Yesterday, another black youth was killed by police in St. Louis, and police immediately mobilized to counter the protests they knew would happen with the now-expected riot gear, tanks, and various other military equipment.

Then they just started arresting random people and firing tear gas into random homes and churches that were not involved in protests at all. Families, kids, and the elderly were exposed to what may have been extra-strength tear gas. You know, the same gas that is illegal to use in the military because it's too dangerous and fucked up. Just shooting that around randomly from tanks.

Tweet collection courtesy of "I Write About Feminism."

Over a year since Mike Brown was murdered and police in the area are more brutal than ever. They'll shoot tear gas into random black homes now, they don't give a fuck. The police in this country have failed to improve at all. I think that's enough evidence to fucking tear down the entire concept of police. Disband every department and hire only people of color to replace the fired cops. Make sure a good chunk of them are gay, lesbian, bi, pan, ace, trans, and/or non-binary. White cishet people need not apply.

U.S. Army Has No Time for Your Misogyny

I'm not exactly a fan of any army, especially not one that does nothing but go around killing civilians to enforce its self-appointed position of imperialist overlord on the world, but I do have to appreciate the effort they made to shut down every misogynist fuckoff on their Facebook page after two women made it into the "Rangers" program.

I once watched a thing on Netflix wherein they filmed the poor saps trying to pass the test to get into the Rangers. The shit they have to go through is so intense, that club must be full of nothing but Brock Samsons.

Training includes running at least five miles several times a week, swimming for miles in a combat uniform, finishing a 15-mile march carrying a 65-pound pack, and doing an astonishing number of push-ups in two minutes. Women had been historically excluded from Ranger school because it was thought they lacked the strength and stamina to complete the program.

But now two women are graduating the program at the same time - the first women to accomplish such a feat. Naturally, misogynistic men assumed that the standards must have been lowered for them or that they had been given some kind of special treatment. They looked for every reason possible to deny the reality that there are women capable of overcoming the same physical challenges as men. The Fort Benning Army Facebook account shut that shit down every time it popped up like they were playing "whack-a-sexist."

What's not excellent is that fact that, despite graduating, these women won't be allowed to serve with the Rangers because army infantry and special operation posts are still "no girls allowed" clubs. I thought we'd fixed that already but apparently not.

I'd much prefer the entire army to be abolished, but that's not gonna happen, so for fuck's sake, let women in. Allow women to brave the high risk of sexual assault so they can also go out enforcing the U.S. imperialist agenda of world domination and killing people of color for oil.

I have the mixed feelings.

Subway's Jared is Another Celebrity Pedophile

This seems like a pretty huge deal to me, considering the fact that Jared is pretty famous - probably the most iconic fast food spokesman guy I know of, but I haven't seen hardly anyone talking about it. I didn't even know that his home had been searched until today when I learned that he's pleading guilty to child pornography charges and Subway has completely dropped him.

FBI sources told Fox59 that the suspended Subway spokesman Jared Fogle will plead guilty to child pornography charges on Wednesday afternoon.
The station reports that the US Attorney’s Office will hold a press conference tomorrow announcing a plea deal and charges against Mr Fogle.
Mr Fogle's attorney told Fox59 reporter Nicole Pence that Subway still has a "mutual suspension" with the spokesman.

But why should I be surprised? Famous cishet white dudes do horrible shit all the time and get away with it. Before long Jared will be out of jail and getting roles on commercials for random shit.

Sean Connery thinks it's cool to slap women for being too argumentative.

Bill Murray brutally abused his wife.

John Lennon admitted to abusing multiple women.

Charlie Sheen has assaulted, abused, threatened, and harassed women, and fucking shot one of them.

Sean Penn tied up and beat Madonna for hours.

Jimmy Page kidnapped, held, and raped a 14-year-old girl for years.

Josh Brolin battered his wife.

Nicolas cage was arrested for grabbing his wife by the arm and dragging her.

Woody Allen.

Eminem made a career out of rapping about hating, abusing, and wanting to kill women.

Tommy Lee beat Pamela Anderson while she was holding their infant child.

Michael Fassbender broke his ex girlfriend's nose and blew out her knee during a beating.

David Hasselhoff abused his wife and children.

Mel Gibson, while also being racist, hit his ex while she was holding her baby, and said she deserved it.

Gary Busey arrested for domestic assault.

Sean Bean arrested for harassing and threatening an ex wife.

Alec Baldwin's ex wife got primary custody of their kids after an independent investigation found that he'd been emotionally and physically abusive.

Rob Lowe sexually assaulted his kids' nanny.

Al Gore sexually assaulted a woman and asked for hand jobs from two separate massage therapists.

Ben Roethlisberger raped two women.

Not even an exhaustive list but I'm exhausted at this point so I'm gonna stop.

It's no coincidence that when Mike Tyson, black man, rapes a woman, he actually faces jail time, when so many male celebrities never did. And it's no coincidence that Bill Cosby has been in the news a shit load for raping women but Jared the Subway guy gets a pass from the media for owning child porn, saying that middle school girls are hot, and paying to have sex with underage girls.

I haven't seen anything about this on Facebook and little more than sick jokes on Twitter. And I'm only hearing about this now that he's pleading guilty? Oh, and prosecutors will only seek up to 12 and a half years for the child-raping pedophile. Awesome.

Tell me again how rape culture is a myth.

Justice is sweet.

American Politics Is Officially a Joke

If you thought this was going to be about the walking joke that is Donald Trump, think again.

The new PPP poll revealed independent candidate Deez Nuts is polling at 9 percent in the Tar Heel state. Running as an independent from Wallingford, Iowa; population 197, Deez Nuts has gone viral and has a large fan base.

U.S. politics are funny to those of us who live here in the way that people sometimes laugh when they realize they're going to die.

I would prefer President Deez Nuts to President Trump. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

White Feminism

Here's an incredibly nice and gentle video for those white feminists who still can't seem to grasp their own privilege even while demanding men check their's.

But There Is Good News

I just stumbled upon this after posting about that horrific murder.

In first, White House hires openly trans staffer.

Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, who formerly served in trans advocacy as policy adviser for the National Center for Transgender Equality’s Racial & Economic Justice Initiative, has been appointed to a senior position in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel. She’s set to begin her new role as an outreach and recruitment director in the Presidential Personnel Office on Tuesday.

She also looks to be a woman of color.

Of course, hiring one trans woman White House staffer isn't going to do anything to stop the brutal murders of trans women across the nation. And it's near the end of Obama's term. I'm not saying this can't be celebrated, but I want to caution my fellow cis people against taking this as a sign that things are all better for trans people and that we can settle down our advocacy. No. This is a crumb. Table scraps. Demand more.

Trans Women Are Still Being Killed

Just so you know and never forget, trans women of color are still being brutally murdered at a shocking rate considering their total population.

Transgender woman killed after being run over multiple times.

I think you mean "transgender woman killed BY being run over multiple times."

And cops are like "maybe this is a hate crime, we dunno."

A dude hit her with his car and then backed over her at least twice. She was a Latina trans woman. Of course this is a hate crime.

You know, people are always complaining about "political correctness" as though that's what makes people too sensitive and too cautious and overprotective. But every time shit like this happens the police and the media are all "well we can't say it's a hate crime yet, we don't KNOW for SURE, I mean we need to ask the murderer why he murdered her first, allegedly, always allegedly, even though we all know this was a murder and there's only one reason shitty straight men run over trans women of color multiple times with their cars, we have to be CAREFUL."

Being politically correct protects victims and the oppressed. The cops and the mainstream media seem to all be out to protect actual murderers, lest we offend anyone by calling them murderers or their crimes hate-based before it's absolutely official and they've been convicted.

Can we put an end to this journalistic correctness? It was a hate crime. All of the so far 19 murders of trans women in the US this year were hate crimes. Because people in this country hate trans women with a violent passion. The end.

NBC Cuts Off Janelle Monáe for Talking About Black Lives

The incredible Janelle Monáe was performing on the unworthy Today Show and at the end she gave a shout-out to the to "all who've lost lives to police brutality." Before she could finish, the NBC anchor started talking over her and the camera panned away.

How fucking dare they.

The ironic thing is that they cut her off just in time to obscure her saying "we will not be silenced."

Black America will not be silenced, though not for lack of trying by White America.

You can see it all here, plus her amazing performance:

The part where she was cut off is at the end, but you should watch the whole performance because GOD DAMN SHE IS GOOD. I've seen so many performances by my fellow white people who are so mediocre live. Janelle Monáe, just, damn. You don't cut off someone this perfect.

Male Entitlement is Dangerous

You know what that means. Yet another woman attacked by a man for saying no!

Montreal woman punched in face in bar fight offers warning to other women

The warning being that if you tell men to stop harassing you, they might violently attack you.

Apparently a group of men were being dickwads in a bar to a group of women, and after a verbal altercation, the men left but one came back and violated some personal space because, again, dickwads. The woman in the article yelled at him, shoving occurred, and then she threw her drink in his face. His response was to wrap both hands around her neck and try to choke her. To get him off, she smashed a pint glass over his head, and then he punched her in the face.

There are two things I want to point out here. Firstly, to the men who like to ask "if men and women are equal does that mean I can hit women now?" Men already hit us. All we have to do is demand respect and maybe get them a little wet and they go right for our throats.

Secondly, fuck cops.

Lefebvre said the police had told her that she was in the wrong because she had used a weapon — the glass — and that she should have called for help rather than try to take on the situation herself.

This really pisses me off because it's the same shit that's been said to female victims of domestic abuse for decades. "Don't defend yourself. Don't hit back. That makes you just as wrong as he is. Nevermind self-defense laws. Oh but if you're a white guy with a gun and someone even makes you feel a little threatened, go ahead and shoot him in the face."

Fuck that shit. Hitting him with the glass was a fantastic idea. He could have killed her. I'm so glad she had the presence of mind to grab the glass and hit him with it. He deserved every bit of it and he should be in jail.

Now, some people would tell you not to look at the comments on that article. But I'm telling you that, if you're a man, you need to go look at the comments.

The top comment is engaging in the old "if you do this minor thing you should expect this completely disproportionate reaction" bullshit. "You can't expect to throw a drink in someone's face and not get any retaliation," he says. Actually, I should be able to expect to not have a guy strangle me, which seems to me to be attempted murder because fuck, that is a vital area, just because I threw a drink in his face. You know what I should expect? At most, for him to throw a drink in my face. Or something equally un-dangerous to my health.

And tell me why he shouldn't have expected a drink in his face if he was harassing her and intentionally violating her boundaries? Why didn't he expect a pint glass to the head if he was going to fucking choke her? It's always on women. Women should have expected this. Women should have done that. She should have called the bouncer that didn't exist. She should have called the police while he was choking her out. On and on and on.

But that's not the worst of it. Oh no.

The woman herself, Chantal Lefebvre, has documented the worst comments for us all to see. These are the ones that directly say she deserved to be choked, punched, and worse. Including death. Yes, there are multiple men who think she should have died for defending herself and demanding the respect she deserves by throwing a drink in a man's face. She made a collage out of that shit, if you have the stomach to look at it. And below that she explains how she has no regrets and that the dickwad deserved the drink to the face and the pint glass to the head.

Reminder that these comments are not out of the norm. I see comments like this every time a woman is attacked for defending herself. By lots of different men. There is a good portion of the male population that thinks women deserve to die for saying no to men.

Tell me again that I'm too emotional over this shit.

Look At This Awesome Thing: Mental Illness Monsters

I love these.

Click to Large

I super love the idea of mental illnesses being little monsters that follow you around. Anxiety is totally a little guy that sits on your shoulder all the time. And the entire concept of the Mental Illness Monster is a stark reminder that those that suffer from mental illnesses are not monsters. Our illnesses don't define us, they just follow us around.

Also the artwork is beautiful.

You can see the rest and more art on the artist's blog.

Hero Trolls Transphobic Whiners for Target

This is the kind of thing that reminds me there is good in this world.

[TRIGGER WARNING: TRANSPHOBIA] Man Poses as Target on Facebook, Trolls Haters of Its Gender-Neutral Move With Epic Replies

Melgaard tells AdFreak that he was just surfing Facebook on Sunday night when he noticed that Target was moving away from gender-based labels in both the toy and children's bedding sections.
"Immediately, I knew there would be your typical outraged American spouting emotional reactions on their Facebook page," he says. "After taking a look, I was literally laughing out loud at my computer. A few more minutes in and it struck me how hilarious it would be to portray myself as a parody customer service rep. So, I did just that, and the rest was history. Honestly, it was like striking comedy gold. Every one of these people gave me the ammunition I needed for a great response."

See, now, this is a great example of how being an ally can be so much fun.

And the best part is that, even though Target had to get the fake account removed and apologize, they clearly loved it.

Target Loved the Guy Who Trolled Its Haters, Judging by This Genius Facebook Post

I think I'm going to be shopping at Target a whole lot more from now on.

Story Time

Best story ever. Old Ladies Yelling At Misogynistic Assholes 2k15.

Military Being Ridiculously Horrible to Chelsea Manning

Prisons in this country are terrible to inmates and throw them into solitary confinement for way too long for minor infractions. People in this country hate trans women. What happens when you combine the two?

Wikileaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning, who is serving 35 years in a military prison for disclosing government secrets, now faces indefinite solitary confinement for a series of minor infractions, including possession of a Vanity Fair issue featuring Caitlyn Jenner’s seminal interview, Malala Yousafzai’s memoir, and an expired tube of toothpaste, according to her lawyers and supporters.

Those are some terrible reasons to subject her to actual fucking torture that drives people out of their minds.

I don't know why any of those items would be banned. Expired toothpaste? Does toothpaste expire?

She also apparently had the audacity to sweep some food under the table and ask for a lawyer. Oh, the humanity.

They're obviously attacking her for being trans and/or for being a whistleblower. Unfortunately, honestly, there's very little we can do. But there is a petition. And let's all be as fucking loud about this as possible, because no one should be subjected to solitary confinement. And especially not for toothpaste-related infractions.

Hahahahahahahahaha menstrugate hahahahha get it hahahahahahaha.

Okay. In honor of the fact that I'm starting my period today, let's talk about the limits people seem to have in supporting the normalization of period-having.

By which I mean read this thing:

Solidarity is for Megyn Kelly

So during the actual circus act that was the first Republican "debate," Megyn Kelly of Fox News pissed off Donald Trump by asking him how he can be President while being such a misogynistic dickhole. Trump predictably responded by being a misogynistic dickhole.

Let's all remember that this entire incident is predicated on the false assumption that only women have periods. Okay.

In response to these remarks, outraged Twitter users responded with the hashtag #PeriodsAreNotAnInsult. The woman who started it all, Amber Gordon, even created a set of templates from which Twitter users can automatically tweet about their periods. The results were glorious.

Glorious indeed. Donald Trump's Twitter mentions were flooded by people who menstruate talking about their periods. Around the same time, a woman in London named Kiran Ghandi (who, incidentally, is not white like Kelly is) published an essay about how she ran a marathon during her period without wearing a pad or tampon or other blood-catching device - aka "free bleeding."

Apparently, people don't have a problem with calling out Donald Trump for using menstruation as an insult because there's nothing wrong with menstruation, but if they actually might have to see some menstrual blood WHOA SHIT THAT'S DISGUSTING, HIDE YOUR SHAME.

This is all the more ridiculous because Ghandi was doing her thing to try and raise awareness about the fact that there's no information about the possible health issues that could occur while running with a tampon (toxic shock, anyone?) as well as the lack of access to menstruation hygiene products in very poor areas of the world.

We don't exactly need to raise awareness about the fact that Trump is a dickhole.

Anne Thériault makes all these points and more. People need to immediately get over themselves about menstruation. This can be an actual health issue. Lack of information about menstruation, and especially tampon usage, can literally kill people. Unless you have dysphoria around menstruation: Get. Over. It.

"What Rape Culture?"

Here's a horrifying story to ruin your day.

Someone posted her story on Tumblr about how her university utterly failed her and treated her like complete shit and protected her assaulter after she was - you guessed it - sexually assaulted.

She appears to be more focused on getting her story out there than getting traffic to her blog, so I'm going to copy-paste it all here. Or go here to read it on Tumblr.

In mid fall, 2014, during my first semester of freshmen year, I was sexually assaulted on Kennesaw State University Campus. Many of you know this campus as that video posted a few months back about the administrator abusing a student? The same thing happened to me.
I took my assaulter to the Kennesaw State University campus police, I attempted charging him through the administrative process twice, and yet he will still walk the campus with the exception of a two page double spaced paper due at the end of the semester. And I will see him in six days. Please, let me tell you my story.
I couldn’t breathe when it first happened to me. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t function properly. Even though majority of my friends at the campus knew about the event a few weeks later, they all believed he was a “good guy that made a bad decision”. My best friend who goes to a different university convinced me, even though I was still hesitant in calling him a sexual assaulter, to go to the KSU police and report him. For weeks I didn’t do it, but finally in mid second semester I did.
After I admitted to having repeated nightmares, enduring emotional breakdowns, and it interfering with my daily life, the police reluctantly agreed to investigate the situation and converse with my predator. While it has a smaller campus versus most universities in Georgia, it took weeks for them to give my case a second consideration and reply. Of course, they didn’t send me any updates on whether or not they spoke to my predator or any other information until they concluded their investigation. Weeks later, I recieved a phone call saying he had ADMITTED to the accusation, but they were not in favor of charging him due to the fact they lacked physical proof (even though, I thought a given confession was proof?), and discouraged me from taking him to court because they didn’t have any “security cameras” outside. Instead, they told me he apologized and because his WORDS were sincere, they pushed me to go to the department THAT DAY and sign a form that stated I wouldn’t ever bring up the incident again. Because, in KSU’s eyes, a verbal apology turns a predator into a victim. I did not like the idea that his words meant more than mine, and that a predator’s grief was more important than the victim’s trauma, so I refused to sign the form and went to the administration and asked for a panel with shaking hands.
Because apparently my assaulter “was uncomfortable” with a panel, they decided to break Title XI (the administration conduct) and not give me a panel. Instead, since he fully admitted to sexually assaulting me both times they interviewed him, they decided to let one woman make the verdict. She took about three months and rarely replied to my emails. In the middle of summer, I got a CALL (Not an assigned visit, since apparently sexual assault isn’t that important) that, due to his actions, he would be on probation (which, if he did anything again, would lead to only a one year suspension) and would have to watch an hour-long video on sexual assault prevention. That was it.
For the second time, I couldn’t breathe. I thought about going public, but I feared they would kick me out or I would be seen as a target by administration, so I decided to politely ask for a panel again as an APPEAL. They couldn’t say no. So they prepared us for the panel and told me, which is why I agreed to do the panel in the first place, that they would interview us fairly in different rooms. I have huge anxieties with talking to people, but I believed I could do this since we were in separate rooms. It took them two months to get it together, and they seemed snappy and annoyed whenever I emailed them. There was a time when we made could both make a statement under email to give the board members an introductory of ourselves and the situation. Me? I told them thank you for giving me an opportunity to speak to them. My assaulter? He preceded to tell them how I was controlling and psychotic and that yes, he was guilty of the actions, but my personality traits were enough to pardon him. He told them that sexually assaulting me was okay because of personality traits. He didn’t even try apologizing. Instead, he acted like a victim.
Three days prior I got an email given the ideal script, and it said something along the lines of my assaulter and I being interviewed in the same room. Immediately, I sent them an email saying how I appreciated them doing this, but I had too many issues seeing him. I could have an anxiety attack and cause myself to hyperventilate or black out. Surely, they must care about me enough to put us in different rooms? But the Director of Student Conduct & Integrity snapped at me and told me that the board members didn’t have time for this already and this is how they were going to do it, no exceptions. I tried not to take it personally, but deep inside me I had a feeling that they hated me more for speaking out then they cared about him being a sexual assaulter.
When I walked in, only the secretary greeted me. The person who originally did the interview between me and my assaulter brushed past me coldly when I tried to say hi, and the director who spoke to me over the email shot me an irritated vibe, because apparently having to do the work you’re paid to do is unethical? Either way, I walked in there with a straight face and without trying to look too hard at the mere posterboard standing between my assaulter and I, I chose to spoke.
When my assaulter spoke, and repeated just about the same words given on the statement sheet, nobody seemed struck. He ended quickly, and the reactions given to me was unheard of when I spoke. Nobody looked at me when I began to speak. One board member was looking at the ceiling, the other was glaring up into space, and the third was paying attention to her nails. While my assaulter’s speech was only a few minutes, mine grew longer and the more I spoke the more annoyed and bored the members looked – one even glared at me and rested her face in her hand and looked at me like I was slowly ruining her day.
It only took five minutes for them to decide his punishment. I was insulted – I went through months of torture for this and they decide on it in five minutes? I walk in, sit down, and they tell me that they believe he is guilty of sexual assault. Sex assault, which can land you years in jail, probation, and can (and should) put stuff on your permanent record. But when they say this, I feel like they’re getting mad at me. They say this in a tone that said they had wasted their day dealing with another student’s trauma, and how horrible that traumatized student ruined their day. They then tell me that his punishment has been lengthened.
He now has to write a double spaced essay, two pages, explaining why what he did was sexual assault.
Later that day I called someone, asking for the audiotape, but the moment I said my name the Director of Student Conduct & Integrity hung up on me. On purpose. I tried calling again and she never picked up.
Kennesaw State University abused me. They didn’t care about my side even though he admitted to the crime. They didn’t show him what he did was wrong. They didn’t give the attention I deserved. Instead, they barely contacted me, pushed me into trying to sign a paper that demanded my silence because my predator said he was sorry, ignored my calls for justice and instead gave him a slap on the wrist, and is making him watch an hour long video on sexual assault. He committed a crime.  I tried charging my sexual assaulter three times, THREE TIMES, and all they showed me is that they don’t care. They don’t care if sexual assaulters walk their campus.
I have to go back in six days and watch him walk that campus. I don’t think I can do it. Knowing that rape culture is more relevant to Kennesaw State University than feminism, makes me sick.
Please reblog. Create awareness. People deserve to know what Kennesaw State University did.
(I know theres people on here from KSU/my old school, but please don’t put my name incase KSU sues me for this. They know who I am, don’t worry).

Hahaha that is all really fucked up. All they did was make things as difficult for her as possible while protecting the guy who admitted to the assault. They were so hostile toward her. But it's always like this in every story. People fucking hate rape victims who come forward and push for justice.

So yeah, Kennesaw State University is yet another U.S. university that is fucking terrible when it comes to sexual assault on their campus. Pass it on. Hey look they have a Facebook page.

Gif of the Day

I actually made this myself. I'm very proud of it.

This is the Best

You may have heard of Roosh V, infamous pickup "artist" who advocates for legalizing rape and goes on world tours to teach men how to manipulate and rape women and get away with it. He's been kicked out of/banned from multiple countries, and when a venue in Canada realized what the fuck he was going to be talking about, they shut it the hell down. So he decided to go bar hopping. Little did he know that the entire city hates his putrid guts.

What follows is wonderful.

Here's where it gets good. Roosh decided to go out to a bar after his event, and that's when he had a beer pitched in his face. Then another and then yet another. The wonderful people at the bar then chased him out, yelling at him to "get the f*ck out of Montreal" but that's not where things ended. The patrons followed Roosh all the way back to where he was staying just to make sure he knew he wasn't wanted here.

Thank god someone got video footage of the glory.

That article even posted the location of the shit bag's hotel, though I'm sure he's long gone by now.

Everybody hates you, Roosh. Do us all a favor and never show your fucking face in public again.

US Anti-Black Racism Update

Alternative headline: Today In What the What, No, Stop

Sunday was the one-year anniversary of the murder of Mike Brown. The people of Ferguson and nearby St. Louis took to the streets to demonstrate against continuing police violence and murders of black people. Predictably, the police turned the streets into something that looked like fucking war zone, arrested Cornel West and a 12-year-old girl, and shot a black guy. Luckily, he didn't die, but is in critical condition.

And then, to add to the fun, some fucking right-wing militants showed up openly carrying assault rifles, dressed in camo gear and bulletproof vests. Instead of screaming at these white guys to get on the ground two seconds before pumping them full of 5000 bullets, the police left. They left.

Can you imagine if a group of black men had arrived with assault rifles? I think you can.

Cornel West and other BLM leaders have been released from police custody, but I don't know if everyone has been yet.

Then there's this fuckery.

And they're charging journalists for the crime of being journalists.

How much worse can it get?

Target Removes Gender Labels on Toys, People FREAK

Okay, are you ready for this? Are you sitting down? Is your seat locked in the upright position?

Target... that big store with the bulls-eye logo thing... took the gENDER LABELS OFF THE TOY AISLES.

Right now, our teams are working across the store to identify areas where we can phase out gender-based signage to help strike a better balance. For example, in the kids’ Bedding area, signs will no longer feature suggestions for boys or girls, just kids. In the Toys aisles, we’ll also remove reference to gender, including the use of pink, blue, yellow or green paper on the back walls of our shelves. You’ll see these changes start to happen over the next few months.

Here's how people are reacting on the Target Facebook page [TRIGGER WARNING: ABLEISM]:

"I saw that Target is "taking a stand against gender stereotypes" by taking away references to boy's clothes, girl's clothes, etc. We're taking a stand too. We won't shop at Target any longer."
"I'm "moving away" from Target. This is a good reason to start shopping local - I might pay more, but I'll be supporting decent, sensible businesses instead of looney-tune, politically correct corporations."
"The inmates are running the asylum."
"The only way to stop this is to boycott the store. I'm not even addressing the toy thing. What about the clothes section. Is then one section. I guess there will be a kids section, and an adult section for adults. Bras and jock straps same isle."
"Bye bye target.. since you dont reconize a girl and are now gender nutural Im standing up for Girls and boys .. the hail with this gender nutural stuff"
"Target, you get that you are playing the part of a, "Genetics Denier." Girls are girls and boys are boys, stop playing social scientist."
"First you will remove gender labels on toys, next you will sell lingerie in the Menswear Dept. I'm sorry Target, I don't support your insanity. I have a Target Credit Card (since 1997) but I will be canceling it first thing tomorrow morning. I will no longer shop at your store or support your twisted agenda."
"Well are the bugs genderless also Target??? Good grief charlie brown.. the world has gone insane including france owned target"

To be clear, Target is keeping the gender labels on the clothing sections, and just phasing them our for toys and bedding and shit like that. Personally I do think the next step is getting rid of gender labels for clothing, so... I guess they can go ahead and panic.

"You caught me!"

Why are you reading what I have to say about the Bernie Sanders thing when black people are writing about it way better?

Bernie Sanders, Black Lives Matter and the racial divide in Seattle

By Ijeoma Oluo. Absolutely perfect. Counters every whiny thing I've heard my fellow white people whining about concerning this particular incident. Thank fuck for Ijeoma Oluo.

Bernie Sanders Can Do Better

First thing I want to do here is to tell my fellow white Bernie Sanders supporters to caaaaaaaaalllllllmmm dooooooowwwwwwwnnnnnnn. Take a deep breath, have a sit, drink some chamomile tea.

It is 1000% amazing often people tell me that I'm too sensitive when any time anyone has even the smallest criticism for someone they support, they go fucking ballistic. Every criticism is called an "attack." I said I was disappointed in Bernie on Tumblr and people were acting like I had called for his head on a pike. Draw yourselves a warm bubble bath, people.

Now, before anyone jumps into my comments section to say that the Black Lives Matter people posted an apology about the actions of the two black women in Seattle who disrupted Bernie's speech on Social Security and/or said that those women do not represent them, this is untrue. If you actually look at the Black Lives Matter website and Facebook page, there is no such post. They actually posted on their main Facebook page that no such apology was issued anywhere, and the Seattle branch has expressed their support for those women. Moving on.

Yes, two black women took the stage as Bernie Sanders was beginning his speech at a rally for Social Security in Seattle (not to be confused with the main event at UW). They took the mic from him and demanded attention to the issue of police violence against black people and their general systemic oppression by our society. There are multiple accounts of what happened, some conflicting, but it's clear that people in the crowd booed these women and some yelled "all lives matter" and "Bernie matters." The latter pisses me off a lot because actually BERNIE KNOWS HE MATTERS. Obviously the guy matters, he has plenty of money and privilege and is the progressive media darling right now, you are completely missing the point of Black Lives Matter, you privileged fucks.

What followed was a bit chaotic with a lot of yelling.

Here's what CNN is saying about it:

Johnson and Willaford demanded -- and eventually won -- a four-and-a-half-minute-long moment of silence in honor of Michael Brown, the unarmed black teenager who was killed by an officer in Ferguson, Missouri, a year ago on Sunday.
Sanders stood just feet away off stage, chatting with his wife, Jane, and the three aides that came to Seattle with him. Sanders' aides said the senator had no plans of leaving during the protests, but once Johnson did not appear willing to give up the mic after the moment of silence, organizers effectively shut down the event.

Okay please tell me they don't mean he was chatting during the moment of silence. I hope not.

CNN then says that Bernie intended to stay and do his speech, which Bernie says was going to touch on violence against black people, but that the organizers of the event decided to shut everything down after the black women refused to give up the mic after the moment of silence. I think that's pretty fucked up. Sounds like "we so badly don't want to listen to you that we're just gonna pull the plug on everything, essentially making those women the bad guys.

And it worked. If you actually take a look at the BLM Facebook page right now, it's being flooded by white Bernie supporters (I saw them being called "BernBots" on Twitter, which I love and am now stealing) whining about how mean they're being to their favorite white guy.

Bernie's response was not terrible but not great. I guess if the organizers shut down the event then he might have had no choice but to leave, but I don't know. I feel like he could have stayed and spoken if he'd wanted to, unless they straight up cut off the mics. At least he could have spoken with the women who interrupted him. But I don't know exactly what happened, so I can't say for sure.

I take issue with some of the things Bernie said about the incident.

"But there are other issues as well that we have to talk about, and that is the fact that the middle class of this country is disappearing and most importantly, we don't bring change in this country... unless all people stand together. That is what we have to do."

First of all, Bernie, that's all you talk about. That's an exaggeration, of course, but seriously, that's his thing. He's spent plenty of time on income inequality but not much time on racial inequality. That's why BLM has a problem with you.

Second, the boring bit about "we have to stick together!" Translation: You have to not criticize me ever! Black people expecting more from you isn't "divisive," Bernie, and implying that it is is an age-old tactic for dodging responsibility for your shortcomings.

That brings me back to the BernBots. Yes, Bernie is good. Yes, Bernie is the best viable candidate for black people. They know that already. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to criticize him and demand the basic ally work all white people owe them. And what have we learned about ally work, hmmm? Could it be that it's essential that we not only listen to them, but give them a platform to be heard whenever possible?

And yes, Bernie did that. He gave them the mic and let them speak on the stage that had been reserved for him at that time. That was great.

Whining about it after the fact is not great. This is where the "keep your fucking mouth shut" part of being an ally comes in.

The most non-ally thing you can do right now is tell black people that they should have waited their turn to speak or that they shouldn't criticize (or in their words, every time, "attack") Bernie because he's on their side. I've seen a whole lot of that horrible, manipulative, abusive shit that is "be nice to the people who have privilege over you or we won't help you!"

One of the best things I learned from Melissa McEwan over at Shakesville is the idea of expecting more. Always expect more from people. Bernie is better than Republicans, yes, and better than any Democrat candidate so far, yes, but he can still do better. And it's not a negative thing! It's a compliment! I say he can do better because I believe he has the capacity to be an even better person he is now - more compassionate, more empathetic, a better ally. Isn't that nice?

I think that's much better than flipping out any time anyone criticizes Bernie like he's some delicate little flower or is a secret asshole who will take his ball and go home if we're too mean to him. Bernie can take it. Bernie can grow! In fact, he's already posted an online thing dedicated to the fight against the systematic murder of black people that BLM has applauded!

But there are some other problems.

His official statement on the incident:

"I am disappointed that two people disrupted a rally attended by thousands at which I was invited to speak about fighting to protect Social Security and Medicare. I was especially disappointed because on criminal justice reform and the need to fight racism there is no other candidate for president who will fight harder than me."

I don't blame anyone for feeling things, but Bernie needs to look at this another way. The key thing missing from this statement is that black people are disappointed that they're being murdered every day and that the only way to stop that shit is to give a platform to black people to speak about it. Which Bernie was given a very literal opportunity to do.

And again, yeah, you are probably the best candidate. BUT YOU CAN BE BETTER. Don't settle, Bernie.

And then, this is just confusing and terrible:

The Bernie Sanders campaign debuted a new plan to deal with Black Lives Matters protesters Sunday amid worries that the movement would try to break up another Sanders stop on his West Coast swing.
Symone Sanders told the crowd to cheer “We Stand Together” over and over if a disruption came in Portland, signaling that the campaign is preparing strategies to prevent Black Lives Matter from shutting it down again.

And I'm confused because Sanders is "a young, black, criminal justice advocate and supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement." You support them but you don't want them to be allowed to speak? You want to shut them down?

That didn't come from Bernie, of course. Symone is actually his new National Press Secretary, hired specifically to try and do better in terms of black lives. So, again, I'm confused.

All in all, I have high hopes that Bernie will continue to get better about this stuff. And at the same time, I have nothing but contempt for white BernBots who respond to any criticism of Bernie with whitesplaining at best and an assault on their movement's Facebook page at... well, at less good, because I know they can do worse. Just wait.
