Here's a handy article to send to your racist Facebook "friends" who try to say that any interaction between a cop and a black person would have been the same if the person had been white.
911 Caller: "There's a Caucasian Man with a Gun"... so naturally Police sit down with him and Talk.
He wasn't just carrying a gun, either.
Joseph Houseman, a 63-year-old white man who, back in May, stood with a rifle on a street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. When police arrived, he refused to identify himself, grabbed his crotch, flipped them the bird and cursed. They talked him down in an encounter that lasted 40 minutes. Houseman was not arrested. The next day, he got his gun back.
But sure, black people get shot by cops because they were being "disrespectful." And by "disrespectful," I guess they mean surrendering, following orders, and not being able to react to screaming officers in the half a second they have before they get shot and killed, because they're 12.
Seriously. We white people can walk around parks waving our guns at people and threatening to shoot, and police won't kill us. We can be as disrespectful as humanly possible to police, and they'll talk us down. We can literally go on a mass shooting and still be taken into custody alive.
White privilege is being able to do the most fucked up things imaginable and still have a reasonable chance of surviving the police encounter. How anyone can pretend this isn't about race is beyond me.
