Representation Matters: The All-Deaf Restaurant

Another great find on Tumblr. There's a new restaurant in Toronto that's staffed entirely by deaf individuals. Patrons are encouraged to use sign language to communicate with the wait staff, with pictures of the signs on the menus so they can order, and other cheat sheets with signs for splitting the check and so on.

This is such a fantastic idea simply for the fact that it encourages hearing people to act on the terms of deaf people. Part of the draw of the restaurant is to experience signing, so they're encouraged to accommodate people who need it rather than expecting marginalized peoples to just deal with unfair hurdles in a society that's designed by and for hearing people.
