Just When You Think It Can't Get Worse

I've seen a lot of deeply disturbing misogynistic trolling in my time. I've seen assholes intentionally try to trigger rape survivors with horrific images, I've read stories of people calling women's homes with threats or even showing up at their door, or receiving photos of themselves and family members at home from anonymous emailers. I've seen women get driven offline from the relentless, vicious, unconscionable attacks.

Not much shocks me anymore. Then there was this.

"Robin Williams’s daughter Zelda driven off Twitter by vicious trolls"

The two trolls (personally I don't think that does them justice, let's call them puddles of fetid pond scum) sent her disturbing images of her father that were photoshopped to reference his suicide. Worse - using misogynistic slurs, they blamed her for his death. Their accounts have been suspended (I hope permanently), but the damage has already been done.

Such a thing really goes beyond trolling. I don't think you could possibly be a worse human being than these two. I don't know if you can really called them human at this point. Zelda Williams has done nothing except release a touching statement to send her love to fans and thank everyone for their support, while making an adorable shot at haters. And this is what she gets? Why? Why the fuck?

I don't even know if I can go into the misogyny at this point. Most readers already get that her brothers never will and never would have received this kind of trolling. I think it would be better to talk about "trolling" in general.

Can we please give up the idea that ignoring trolls works? What good does ignoring trolls work when they can send this kind of shit to a grieving daughter? What has the mantra of "don't feed the trolls" gotten us? They're more vicious than ever. So can we all admit now that it doesn't work?

Slay the trolls. Slay the fucking trolls. If they can dox us, someone dox them. Feminists on Tumblr are taking up this practice and it's fucking awesome. Rapists and potential rapists are getting their info posted and spread. I sent an email expressing my concern to a high school about one guy, and I later found out that because of the emails and general online outrage, the kid got suspended. He actually experienced some consequences.

Now, most people loved Robin Williams, so I think we can all be on the same side here and say that these two individuals are the lowest of the low. I'm not saying stoop to their level. Don't send them horrific images, don't tell them to kill themselves. Let's just figure out who they are, let them know that we all hate them and ostracize them forever. That's how you deal with social deviants. Humans are social creatures, so being ostracized is a terrible punishment. Let all trolls and potential trolls know that it's not fucking worth it.
