Today is Women's Equality Day, a day set aside to celebrate the creation of the 19th amendment. A lot of people will say and are saying that this gave women the right to vote. This is not the whole truth.
It gave white women the right to vote. White women. Only the white ones.
Women of color had to wait a lot longer for that right.
Because so many people forget this and because feminism has such a problem with ignoring women of color and generally being white-centered, I don't personally celebrate this day. Except to remind people that only white women got the right to vote on it. You can celebrate by reminding people you know!
There are a lot of great days to celebrate women, but today is not one of them. Because it was White Women's Equality Day, and that's not nearly equal enough.
